Love Can Damage Your Health

Posted on February 6, 2005

GUARDIAN — Feb 6 — Once taken seriously by mental health experts, love stopped being studied by psychologists and doctors in the 18th century. ‘People became preoccupied with sex, not love, thanks to the likes of Freud,’ Tallis said.   People who are ‘lovesick’ exhibit a wide variety of symptoms, including mania, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder, which should be treated like any other psychological condition.  Evolutionary theorists hold that ‘lovesickness’ lasts only long enough for two people to produce one or two children, after which it dies or turns to friendship, what psychologists call ‘companionate love’.  FULL ARTICLE @ THE GUARDIAN UK

Friendster Commodifies Notion of “Friend”

Posted on February 4, 2005

CHICAGO MAROON — Feb 4 — Friendster has either changed our mentality about social relationships or simply brought that mentality further out into the open. Hey, sure…maybe you like someone. But let’s get to the point: You want to meet people. And this person—friend, passing acquaintance, whatever—is a stepping-stone to that. And look: I have 362 friends on my page! All these little pictures I’ve accumulated give me self-worth—and help me network! Of course, Friendster doesn’t merit all the responsibility for cheapening the connotation of the word “friend.”

Mark Brooks: Friendster has mechanised human networking so some abuse is natural. The integrity/quality of a persons Friendster network can be judged by the testimonials and is inversely proportional to how many people over 100 friends they have. Just how many ‘ really good’ friends can one have. Probably a dozen, max.

Many Singles Struggle in Marriage-Fixated Society

Posted on February 3, 2005

HONOLULU ADVERTISER — Feb 3 — There are 86 million unmarried adults in the United States, a fast-growing group of people who often find themselves singled out in a society designed for two. Despite holding more than 40% of the nation’s jobs, singles often feel they have a lot stacked against them — higher taxes, higher insurance premiums, working more holidays and fewer benefits for their partners. "What’s going on with all these TV shows is the glorification of couplehood," DePaulo says. "And it’s reached a fever pitch at exactly the time when marriage is less and less necessary in many people’s lives." One of the reasons for the rising number of singles is more couples are living together before marriage — 50%, University of Michigan researcher Pamela Smock says. These days, half of all births occur in homes where the parents are not married. 90% of American adults will be married at some point in their lives. But many will end in divorce. The average American adult who lives to age 70 will spend more of his or her adult life single than married. FULL ARTICLE @ HONOLULU ADVERTISER

Virginia Panel Rejects E-Dating Background Checks

Posted on February 1, 2005

WASHINGONPOST — Feb 1 — A Virginia General Assembly committee rejected a bill requiring online dating companies to prominently state whether they conduct criminal background checks on their users; voted 9-4 against the bill. So far, Vest (CEO True.com) has persuaded legislators in several states to sponsor legislation. The Michigan House of Representatives passed a bill last year, but it died later in the state Senate. A Texas state senator plans to introduce a similar bill before the end of the week, and similar measures are afoot in Ohio and Florida. "To think that you require a criminal background check is a little over the top. I think there’s been some nightmarish stories, but I don’t think that is unique to Internet dating. I felt like it was, frankly, overregulation and not an area where the government needs to jump in with both feet," said Committee member Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax).

Mark Brooks: …and the rest of the online dating industry breathes one more sigh of relief.

eHarmony; Dr Warren’s Story

Posted on February 1, 2005

BELLA ONLINE — Feb 1 — In 1995 Dr. Neil Clark Warren, moved his counseling practice to a new office in Pasadena. Much of his time was consumed with creating materials to teach people how they could have a better marriage. One day while talking with his son-in-law Greg Forgatch, he told him about a study he had done in which he asked 100 married couples to tell him what makes a great marriage.  His son-in-law asked him had he ever thought of creating a service for singles based on that kind of information?  FULL STORY @ BELLAONLINE

Mark Brooks: Dr Warren started eHarmony.  Greg is the CEO now.  PerfectMatch and True are direct competitors and are branding on their personality profiling.
