Google Sparks Privacy Fight

Posted on January 21, 2006

Google_1Associated Press — Jan 21 — Should the government be allowed to snoop on "aggregated query data (not search results)" from Google?  "The Bush administration apparently never asked for any explicitly personal information….AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo agreed to the requests."  Google refused.  " 'My understanding is, we were seeking what keywords are put in and URLs,' said Justice Department spokesman Charles Miller. Nothing personal.''

The full article was originally published at San Jose Mercury News, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks – The government is treading a fine line, but I don't have a problem with them seeing aggregate search results and URL's, as long as they can't snoop on individuals.  I was interviewed on the subject by the Associated Press for this National TV news piece (first person to comment).

YAHOO! Personals Hooks up With Starbucks

Posted on January 20, 2006

Starbucks_1NY POST — Jan 19 — Starbucks and Yahoo! Personals will announce the start of a new relationship today. The coffee giant will give away $10 Starbucks gift cards to people who register for the Internet dating site through Feb. 19. The site will have a location finder for the nearest Starbucks store.

Mark Brooks: That's a good start on a great potential relationship.  I was wondering when Starbucks would cotton on and seek out a deal with a dating company.  I recommend the 'coffee date' as the ideal first quick-date after meeting someone online.

MySpace Intent on Staying User-Friendly

Posted on January 20, 2006

Myspace_10MSNBC — Jan 18 — If MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe has his way, the quirky social networking site he co-founded two years ago will hold tight to its homegrown roots, even though it now boasts more unique users than Google or AOL and has a new owner at its helm.  The company’s recent acquisition by News Corp., one of the most powerful news conglomerates on the planet, has some of the site’s 43 million members nervous that their online home might become subject to the rules of an overbearing parent.  "The secret to our success is our one-to-one relationship with our users," the 39-year-old DeWolfe says about the portal he created with co-founder Tom Anderson. DeWolfe is a Portland, Oregon native with an MBA from the University of Southern California.  "My passion is the consumer marketing side of things," he says, crediting longtime friend Anderson with giving the site its creative voice. MySpace’s Santa Monica-based office has grown from fewer than 10 employees to 200.  FULL ARTICLE @ MSNBC

Mark Brooks: Facebook is also enjoying similar success.  What of Friendster? Too little too late, or is the social networking pioneer going to rise from the ashes somehow.  Myspace has stolen it’s thunder.  I live in hope that Friendster can find it’s way again.  Alexa Chart

Internet Dating: A Consumer’s Guide, Part IV

Posted on January 20, 2006

AppledatescomNY PRESS — Jan 18 — JDate is a Jewish dating service but does not exclude gentiles. A surprising number of its purported 300,000 members aren't of the tribe. In particular, many goyishe women seem to join with the hopes of bagging a successful doctor or lawyer. Some disenchanted JDate members have complained to me that the site seems to draw an especially mercenary female crowd. Appledates.com: A new site that's attractive, well-designed and singular, run by an employee of the New York Press. That said, it offers something that no other internet dating site offers: It asks members to pick events from local lists that they wish to attend. At present, though, it has few members.

Meetic Pays $20 million for Stake in China’s Top Online Dating Site

Posted on January 19, 2006

MeeticINTERFAX — Jan 19 — Meetic paid USD 20 mln for a majority stake in eFriendsNet Entertainment, which operates China's largest online dating website Yeeyoo.com. "Meetic made this acquisition because it wants to enter the social networking market in Mainland China in an efficient way," said eFriendsNet spokesperson Qi Xin. "The business model and profitability of China's social networking industry is becoming more clear and that has drawn more attention from foreign investors."  Meetic has already transferred traffic from its Chinese website to Yeeyoo.com, and will also send senior staff from Europe to provide training to Yeeyoo.com's employees. Moreover, Meetic may also later purchase a 100% stake in eFriendsNet.  Founded in December 2003, eFriendsNet provides online dating services via its internet portal Yeeyoo.com (4 million registered members), and is also a provider of mobile value-added services to China Mobile and China Unicom.

Mark Brooks: If you want a piece of Asia, you should consider coming along to iDate Asia.

Speaking Out to Jewish singles

Posted on January 19, 2006

SomeonejewishEUROPEAN JEWISH PRESS — Jan 8 — The someonejewish.com posters in London ask the tongue-in-cheek question, 'Mother still nagging?' offers the solution, 'The answer…SomeoneJewish.com'. SomeoneJewish is a premium online Jewish dating service offering customer support in the UK.  Co-founder Leslie Bunder said, "we decided to set it up as there wasn't a premium service in the UK aimed at the Jewish market. We make sure members fill in a full profile before it goes live, thereby it enables other members to get a better and fuller insight into a member." JMT Ventures started in 1996 with one website, Jewish.co.uk, aimed at the UK community. Aside from its dating website, its Jewish digital media properties now include SomethingJewish.co.uk, DailyJews.com, JewishBlogging.com, JewishReunion.co.uk and JewishJokes.net.

The full article was originally published at European Jewish Press, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: JDate is a hugely profitable niche site.

Insanity Reigns When Dating and Technology Collide

Posted on January 19, 2006

Poddater_1GANNETT NEWS SERVICE — Jan 17 — Through http://www.poddater.com, users of the new video iPod can download video profiles of singles. Women can get recommendations from other women about good guys at http://www.greatboyfriends.com, but they should probably cross-reference him first on http://www.dontdatehimgirl.com.  If you're superficial and shallow, there's http://www.dreammatches.com, a "dating service for beautiful people."  Those who want to stalk good-looking members of the opposite sex also can go to http://www.hotmaps.frozenbear.com, which combines the technology of Google mapping with the rating and dating site http://www.hotornot.com. Or try "Hot Or Not Hook-Up" at http://www.hotmatch.frozenbear.com. It's a really dumb thing to do, but it's totally addictive. There's a site for introverts and shy singles called http://www.shypassions.com.  The Toronto-based Ashley Madison Agency helps you cheat on your spouse.
