Sexy Hoax Turns Into Dating Fad

Posted on March 13, 2006

REUTERS — Mar 11 — A British internet journalist set up a website two years ago filled with fictional accounts from friends who claimed to have used Bluetooth technology to make contact for a chat, romance or even sex — a practice the site dubbed "toothing."  News organizations across the world, including Reuters, The Guardian, the BBC and Wired News, fell for the story and reported that "toothing" had taken off among commuters.  A year later the journalist behind the site published an online confession claiming it was an elaborate hoax to prove he could create a new sexual buzzword.  "I tried some tests on the underground and pubs and found lots of cell phones were turned on and used for 'toothing,' which was strange because I thought it was a joke too," said a Milan DJ.  To play, you need you need to activate the Bluetooth facility available on your mobile phone, which will then show a list of people within a few yards who are also active. Then write a message and press send.  Young men in Dubai have been using the technology to contact women in public places, according to the BBC's website.

Meeting Christians Online

Posted on March 13, 2006

ChristiancafecomFAITH TODAY — Mar/Apr Issue — Christians collectively spend millions of dollars searching for that special someone on the Internet. Amid 700 websites offering dating and matchmaking, what's a good single Christian to do? "I always tell people they should consider what their preferences are," says Mark Brooks, editor of www.OnlinePersonalsWatch.com. "If you really want to meet someone who is Christian, you can go on Match and Yahoo and say, 'I'm a Christian and I want to meet a Christian.' If you're open to receiving communications from people who aren't Christian, then by all means use a general site."  Despite filters and preferences, most sites don't tease out non-Christians. That's where the niche sites come in. ChristianCafe.com (in partnership with Christianity.ca), Singlec.com, ChristianityToday.com.  "The market is simply oversaturated," says Sam Moorcroft, founder and president of ChristianCafe.com. "A lot of companies got into it thinking it's easy, which isn't true." "This is a very 'sexy' business," says Brooks. "It's like opening a restaurant.  It's very appealing, like you're doing humanity a great service, but it's tougher than it looks." ChristianCafe.com tallies 100,000 active members within a three-month timeframe and grosses seven figures with 10-12 employees.

Temporary Restraining Order Issued to Block International Marriage Broker Regulation Act

Posted on March 13, 2006

OnlinedatingrightsPR WEB — Mar 10 — Have lawmakers fully read IMBRA?  Are they aware of its implication, prejudice and its lack of common sense to protect immigrant women from abuse?  Visit http://www.online-dating-rights.com.  US District Judge Clarence Cooper out of the Northern District of Georgia Atlanta Division issued the TRO on March 7, 2006, barring the government from enforcing the International Marriage Broker Act of 2005 against European Connections & Tours Inc. A Preliminary Injunction Hearing in this matter is now scheduled for March 20, 2006. (European Connections & Tours, Inc. vs. Gonzalez, et al., No. 1:06-cv-00426-CC, U.S.D.C., N.D. Ga.). Citizens Against Dating Discrimination (CADD) stance is that IMBRA fails to protect immigrant women from abuse and also violates American men’s privacy rights in the process. This law requires international dating webmasters to be policemen and collect background information on male members. The law requires this background information to be forwarded to any lady a male wants to meet at the introduction stage without regard to his privacy.  CADD maintains that it is not fair for giant sites like Match.com to be exempt from doing background checks. RELEASE @ PR WEB

Mark Brooks: IMBRA provides fuel for online personals background checks legislations fire.
