Cupid.com/PreDating World Record Attempt

Posted on February 6, 2007

September_17_2006_195OPW — Feb 6th — I'm live blogging from the Decathlon Club in Silicon Valley where Cupid.com is attempting a world record attempt for speed dating. Over 3000 singles, across the U.S.A., will be brought together for speed dating this evening. There are 46 people here. It's a classy venue, and at $34 a head it should be. One person left at the interlude, that's typical, and there were several no shows, which always amazes me, at $34 a pop. People get shy, or busy, or get hooked up and bail on the event at the last minute. Then they get hotlisted as no-shows by PreDating and can't book again. No shows are a major pain for speed dating events. I've run and monitored many speed dating events, and Ace-Club events and I think speed dating events are still the easiest way for singles to get out from behind the computer and easily meet a room full of people. Hikes and wine tastings are better events in many ways, but speed dating events are more consistent and controllable as an event format that is safe and scalable. On average people make two or three double matches each evening.  – Mark Brooks

Spark Networks Acquires HurryDate

Posted on February 5, 2007

Hurrydate_logoPR NEWSWIRE — Feb 1 — Spark Networks acquired HurryDate, a leading online personals and singles events company. "Adding HurryDate to the Spark family is another step towards expanding our offline presence and solidifies our position as the only leading online personals provider to effectively 'marry' the online and offline dating worlds," stated Greg Liberman, Spark Networks' President and COO. "We are focused on smoothing the process of introduction by making it easier for singles to meet and get to know one another whether online or offline." HurryDate parties held 50 cities across the U.S. and Canada.

The full article was originally published at PR Newswire, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: I helped Cupid buy PreDating.com in 2004. Now Spark has bought Hurrydate.  Who will buy 8 Minute Dating? The press are no longer covering speed dating and they are having a hard time driving traffic from PPC, CPM and CPA marketing because of all the competition from dating sites which generally convert better. Traffic is significantly down to both these services. Alexa shows them peaking in, and Quantcast shows them at a couple thousand uniques a week now.

eHarmony Offers Relationship ‘e-therapy’

Posted on February 5, 2007

ElabUPI — Feb 5 — eHarmonyLabs launched Monday as an interactive relationship advice service that offers everything but the leather couch to users seeking help to build lasting bonds with their significant others.  eHarmonyLabs is run by a scientific advisory board of sociologists, neurologists and human relationship experts who offer advice on all aspects of relationships. Since its initial launch in 2000, eHarmony has built a membership of more than 12 million. David Card, a Jupiter Research analyst, said the online dating industry made $650 million from personals in 2006, and predicts $700 million in 2007, and nearly $1 billion by 2011. With ~0 million subscribers in 2006, the industry continues to grow at a healthy pace.

Mark Brooks: In order for eHarmony to continue to be able to command premium memberships it needs to be perceived as being the company doing the most research on relationships, and make it's team of researchers more public.  eHarmonyLabs will help eHarmony  stay one step ahead of the likes of Chemistry.com. The Jupiter numbers have been adjusted upwards since the 'slow period' in 2005 when Jupiter predicted the industry would reach $623 million by 2009.
