Mars Gets Naughty And Naughtier

Posted on May 20, 2009

Fling adult site mars website CNBC — May 19 — Companies spend huge amounts of time and money naming new products to elicit certain emotions. So Mars, the candy company, thought "Fling" would be a good name for a candy bar aimed at diet-conscious women. The bar "tastes indulgent" but has less than 85 calories. "Naughty…but not that Naughty" is the tagline. Women wanting to find out more would probably go online and type in Fling.com right? That would be a mistake. Fling.com sends them to a porn site,"The Hottest Place to Hook Up". Instead, Mars had to settle for FlingChocolate.com.

Virtual Currencies Power Social Networks

Posted on May 20, 2009

Second life virtual currency CNN — May 19 — Currencies that exist only online are becoming a more significant part of commerce on the Web and in the real world. Some, like the hi5 Coin, operate almost like tokens in an arcade or tickets at a fair: They're a stand-in for real-world currency. Other "virtual currencies," like Second Life's Linden Dollars, however, are traded on markets. The currencies also fuel online gaming communities and are becoming an important part of social networks. Edward Castronova, a professor of telecommunications at Indiana University, says people transfer at least $1 billion into the virtual currencies each year, with most of that money going into online games. Social Proof In Online Dating Profiles

Posted on May 20, 2009

Plentyoffish dating tips blog header PLENTYOFFISH DATING TIPS — May 19 — There is a way to influence potential online daters to perceive you and your profile as more attractive. It is called Social Proof, a phenomenon that occurs when the consensus of others has an influence on the thoughts of a person. This concept was made by Robert Cialdini's book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. A good example of social proof is the idea of "canned" laughter that we hear on sitcoms. Examples of social proof in online dating could be:
– Using Prop Profile Pictures -  a picture with you either doing something really interesting or in an interesting place
– Getting Testimonials on Your Profile
– Favorites which is like a bookmark for people who find your profile attractive or interesting

British Dating Site In Trouble For Using Obama’s Name

Posted on May 18, 2009

Obamasinglesdating header ZEENEWS — May 17 — A British dating site has landed into trouble for trading on Barack Obama's name and posting a snap of America's First Couple on its portal. According to 'Daily Star', 'ObamaSinglesDating.com' is facing an investigation for using Obama's name on their portal and posting an album of the US First Couple, including a photo with the Queen snapped in London earlier this year without any permission from the White House. Computer expert Al Clarkson said: "These guys are sitting on a potential goldmine because singles who land on that site — which will come up high on search engines because of Obama's name — are likely to be tempted to register. It's actually a clever scam as what appears to be a deliberately outrageous joke will hook a lot of people." FULL ARTICLE @ ZEENEWS

Robin Gorman Newman, Author / Speaker / Relationship Coach

Posted on May 16, 2009

Robin.gormannewman OPW INTERVIEW — May 16 – Robin is an expert on Jewish dating and wrote the book “How To Marry a Mensch.” Here’s our interview with this wonderful lady. – Mark Brooks

How long have you been in the industry?
I started as an author 15 years ago. It was never my intent to become a love coach. I always wanted to be published, and the first book I wrote was “How To Meet a Mensch in New York”. The book did very well. I got on the Today Show, CNN and Good Day New York. I also garnered press in London and Australia. The media attention was beyond anything I imagined. Then I did a 2nd edition of the same title in 1996.

I was on the Workshop Discussion Tour when a friend said to me, “Why don’t you do one on one consultations?” So I started offering private consults to singles to help them lead a more successful social life. I own a great domain, LoveCoach.com, so I think I might have actually “coined” the title love coach, though I can’t prove it.

Then I wrote another book which came out in 2006, called “How to Marry a Mensch”, which is all the stories I’ve accumulated over the years, including my own experience, plus advice.

I blog now on my website called “Relationship Rap with Robin” and aspire to host a radio show and/or teleclasses one day. I would love to come on board with an online dating company to serve as their front person.

So your consultation focuses mainly on how to attract and get a mate or is it more relationship therapy?
I work mainly with someone who is looking for a long term relationship, with someone who has made bad dating choices and doesn’t know why he/she hasn’t connected with Miss or Mr. Right. I work with men and women of all ages and backgrounds.

What would companies like eHarmony or Match gain out of working with you?
My focus is to point people in the right direction socially. I can help people write profiles and choose an effective photo. I’ll even go so far as to recommend wardrobe possibilities or a haircut, if need be. I’m available to online dating companies to serve as a consultant for their clients. I could also be their Dr. Phil, and help promote the website in a more public arena since I’m skilled at doing press interviews. Maybe even write a column or host teleclasses for them, as a value added incentive for singles.

The biggest issue the internet dating industry has faced is customer attention. The average customer is on for 3 or 4 months and then go on. The second issue is the revenue itself. They are looking for additional revenue opportunities. If you were the CEO of Match.com, what would you change to increase their revenue?
I see the web dating scenario as a numbers game. You have to have a fabulous photo; you need to present yourself in a way that reads more than just a resume. My clients often approach it in a perfunctory fashion. They just want to get something up. They don’t take responsibility, and then turn around and say the Web doesn’t work. It would help a lot to have someone guide them during the process so they don’t get overwhelmed.

Mr And Mrs JDate

Posted on May 15, 2009

Jdate founders picture JEWISH JOURNAL — May 13 — As the founding partner of JDate in 1997, Joe Shapira is among the most prolific shadchanim (matchmakers) in Jewish history. More than 21,000 JDate couples reported their marriages to their cyber-yenta in 2008 alone. The site spans England, France and Israel, with Russian and Spanish sites in development. Shapira founded JDate with partner Alon Carmel a few years after divorcing his first wife, with whom he has three kids, but he never used JDate for himself, mostly, he said, “because I have a very outgoing personality, so I never had a problem starting a conversation with someone I liked. But without JDate, he probably wouldn’t have met Nickie who came to his office in search of subjects to interview for a book she was writing at the time, a practical guide for finding and marrying Mr. Right. In 2004, Shapira resigned as CEO of Spark Networks, four years after taking the company public, and now serves as president of Java Equities, a real estate acquisitions and management conglomerate — a job he describes as “less exciting but stable.”
