Two Former Police Officers Founded MyMatchChecker.com
WEST PALM BEACH – Jan 7 – MyMatchChecker.com allows clients to run a background check on their next date. The 2-year-old site was relaunched in Apr by Andrew Scott, a former police chief, and Robert Buchholz, a retired police captain. Prices range from $9.95 for a basic background check to $64.95 for an advanced search. Most dating sites do not screen members to make sure they are not felons, sexual predators or married. They contend that state and county databases are often incomplete, so claims of screening can give members a false sense of security. "All of the information that we acquire is in the public domain. There is no invasion of privacy," Buchholz said. Buchholz and Scott plan to expand their business by offering a subscription to the site and partnering with dating websites.

But what students say they find most romantic is a handwritten letter. BUSINESSWEEK – Jan 6 – 14 ago, Joseph Weiner founded Hand-In-Hand, a matchmaking agency that charges ~$2,000 for a "supervised courtship"—a process that matches guys with younger Eastern European women. Hand-In-Hand has now 30 satellite offices. It is estimated that the number of mail-order marriages in the U.S. more than doubled between 1999 and 2007, when up to 16,500 such unions were sealed. Since the recession began, "we've seen more men sign up," says John Adams, the co-founder of A Foreign Affair, which charges $4,000 for the right to attend champagne-soaked "socials" in various Eastern European cities. After a few highly publicized murders of women brought to America through international matchmakers, the U.S. passed the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act of 2005 (IMBRA). BIZ JOURNALS – Jan 4 – Match.com is facing a class action lawsuit filed by former customers who allege the company is misleading clients by having them pay for access to dating profiles that are often expired or false profiles created by spammers.
