Posted on February 28, 2011

Datemyschool logo NY TIMES – Feb 25 – Date My School, a site which just received $500K from private investors, went live for Columbia last November and New York University in December, restricting membership to those with .edu e-mail addresses at these two institutions. Within a week, Date My School had attracted ~ 1,300 users (5% of Columbia’s student population). It now has 7,000 users.

All The Good Men: Lost, Now Found

Posted on February 25, 2011

Ivydate logo PR WEB – Feb 25 – Exclusive dating service IvyDate claims to have the world's most well-educated, sophisticated and driven singles. IvyDate.com has been founded by Harvard Business School graduates. Last spring, Philipp Triebel and Beri Meric began crafting IvyDate as the successor to their controversial DateHarvardSQ venture. The initial project provided access to a significant base of Harvard educated singles, attracting thousands of women who were asked to pay subscription fees in order to meet them. While the former Harvard site is still flourishing, the founders now have their eyes set on a new prize – IvyDate's undisputed reign of the New York and London dating scenes.

Women From New York Pay For The Date

Posted on February 25, 2011

Woman paying for dinner NY POST – Feb 25 – A recent study of US Census data found that the income of single women in their 20s living in New York City is now 17% higher, on average, than that of their male counterparts. This income shift in the midst of an anemic economy is also shaking up dating rules in the city. So instead of the perfunctory “purse reach” at the end of a romantic meal, young women are now pulling out the plastic. Biological anthropologist Helen Fisher says it’s not surprising that New York women are less concerned about a fellow’s puny finances than they may have been in past years. “Money seems to be pretty far down on the totem pole” of relationship criteria, she says, citing the Single in America study of 5,200 US singles she just completed in partnership with Match.com. According to her findings, only 4% of men and 17% of women would “definitely not date” someone who was unemployed.

Mark Brooks: Etiquette says that if a woman wants to pay on a first date, she's not really interested in the guy. So, women beware. Guys can get mixed signals here. On first dates, if you want to pay, make sure to let the guy know you're interested in them, but also believe in paying for the first date. Then let the guy take you out on the next date. If he likes you, he will, if he has any money and cojones.

In China, Matchmaking Means Gold Digging

Posted on February 24, 2011

Jiayuan logo new BEHIND THE WALL – Feb 24 – Golden Bachelor Matchmakers is a company whose main revenue stream comes from finding female companions for wealthy men. “People misunderstand the rich guys,” said Gong Haiyan, the CEO of Jiayuan, an online dating site that occasionally hosts special events for single millionaire men. “They worry if they go out hunting girls they’d only find gold diggers.” And gold diggers seem to be everywhere. At least in China’s current pop culture, where reality TV dating shows like “If You Are the One” have attracted large numbers of viewers. When it first began airing, a female contestant, Ma Nuo, responded to an invitation by a poor young man to take a ride on his bicycle by saying, “I would rather cry in a BMW.” Her put-down generated a huge outcry among viewers, social commentators, and government officials. At a weekend marriage market in central Shanghai, where parents gather to find mates for their sons or daughters, the trait listed at the top of virtually every handwritten poster trumpeting the suitability of a single man is his income or assets.

How To Choose A White Label Dating Service

Posted on February 24, 2011

White_box OPW – Feb 21 – Here's the top ten showstopper considerations we think you should consider when choosing a white label dating provider:

1. Critical Mass - Are they at critical mass for your niche? Sign up as a user.  Try it out.
2. True Niches – Does the service provider offer true, cordoned niches of their database.
3. Billing and Payouts In Multiple Currencies + Alternative Billing  – Make sure the white labeler you're considering offers multiple billing currencies.  It all adds up. Mobile and alternative billing helps find money.
4. Twice Monthly Payouts, At Least – You want to get paid on a more frequent basis than you're settling for your ad spends, ideally.
5. Robust Billing – The golden words are 'Are you PCI DSS compliant.'
6. Robust Campaign Tracking & Reporting – Sub-id tracking should be built in.  This is basic stuff.
7. Active Email Marketing – At least 25% of your dating site sales (and commissions) will come from emails marketing.
8. Customer Service & Retention – Sign up as a user and see what happens when you load a bad photo, and when you call-in to try canceling. Test how long it takes to get an email answered, and how long it takes for your potential white labeling partner to pick up the phone.
9. No Fakesters – Beware white labelers who resort to sending fake emails to registrants, from fake profiles.
10. No Scammers – Make sure your white label dating provider is properly 'armed' against scammer attacks.
There are more considerations, but these are the top ten showstoppers.
