Social Media Sites May Be Ready For Romance

Areyouinternested app logo CNBC – Feb 8 - Dating has always been a “social” activity, but could social networks win over the dating crowd? “To some degree the answer is yes,” says Marshal Cohen, chief analyst at the NPD Group. Social networking could solve many of the complaints of traditional dating sites he says. “It can be almost like a full time jon", says Cohen. “People need to weed through the potential matches and that’s a big investment of time.” Facebook could have an advantage over dating sites, because love can be found when you’re not even looking for it. And then there are the companies that are adding the love element. The Facebook app Are you Interested reportedly has ~13M users, which rivals the number of users for Match.com and eHarmony. Video Web Chat Now Available On Mamboo

Mamboo logo PRESS RELEASE – Feb 8 - Mamboo, the UK’s newest dating site, has launched a free video live chat service. Mamboo's system will automatically identify a connected web-cam and activate the video chat button when a member goes online but none of the conversations can be started without the user's permission. Since its launch the Mamboo social community has grown rapidly and now has ~ 95K members.

Zoosk’s 2010 Sales Up 250% To $90 Million

Zoosk logo new TECH CRUNCH – Feb 8 – That’s up from $20M in revenue in 2009. Zoosk says that sales growth was driven primarily by sales of its premium subscriptions, which are offered in 60 different countries around the world. International expansion is a big area of growth for the dating site, which has support for 25 different languages and has started a global advertising campaign. Launched in late 2007, Zoosk has raised $40.5M in new funding, and rolled out a proprietary matching technology, which has suggested more than 700M matches since it was first launched in September 2010. Heartbroker Launches Friendliest Dating App On Facebook

Heartbroker logo PR WEB – Feb 8 – Heartbroker has launched its dating site. Heartbroker is using friends to help improve match quality and member security. Heartbroker works by having singles ask their trusted friends to write a testimonial and rate them on five simple attributes. The testimonials are listed on singles' profiles so that their matches can evaluate them. The attribute ratings, on the other hand, remain confidential to encourage honest feedback, and are used to determine compatibility with others. Friends can also try their hand at playing Cupid with Heartbroker by suggesting matches to their single friends.

IRISH TIMES – Feb 8 – Online dating has become commonplace, and spring is the most popular time for people to give it a go. Paula Hall of Parship.ie says that spring brings by far the biggest spike in new members. In fact, up to three times as many people join in spring as at any other time of the year. Jill McGrath, MD of Maybefriends.com, sees a similar trend, with up to 6,000 new people joining the site in January alone. Some are big questions like, "If love was a place which would it be?" or "What does happiness mean to you?" Others are more mundane, such as "If you had an extra hour today, what would you do?" or "What do you like doing on holiday?" OPW – Feb 7 – Marc Lesnick and Mark Brooks discussed what happened at iDate 2011 in Miami. Close to 400 people attended the conference. The conference brought a lot of new people and a lot of good ideas too.

We are seeing large corporation such as Royal Caribbean wanting to work with the dating industry. That’s a great business development initiative for the industry as a whole. They should be advertising on dating sites and should have more advertisers in general kicking down our doors.

"One of the take aways I had from this conference, from the final panel, was when someone proposed that we have some kind of a gold seal, gold standard for the industry. There are certain role players in the dating industry and it would be nice to stand above the crowd by having that differentiation and that distinguishing factor', said Mark Brooks.

On the final panel when Marc Lesnick asked the speakers if the internet dating industry overall was going to do better next year, everybody agreed except of Markus Frind from PlentyOfFish.com and Sam Yagan from OKCupid. They said paid dating site are going to have to lower their prices in order to compete with free sites.

Definitely a split panel on that point. But ultimately people are paying more. The revenues are up from the companies we have visibility on and the number of people visiting internet dating companies has set a new record this month. According to ComsCore, 27M people visited dating sites in December 2010. Mark McMaster from Google said the search volume for dating keywords in general is up 20% YOY.
