Match.com Will Begin Screening Its Users Against Sex Offender Registry

Posted on April 18, 2011

Match logo new ASSOCIATED PRESS – Apr 17 – Match.com will begin screening its users against the national sex offender registry after a woman filed a lawsuit against the company saying she had been assaulted by someone she met through Match.com. Mandy Ginsberg, president of Match.com, said the company had considered such screenings for years, but “their historical unreliability has always led us to conclude against it." “We want to stress that while these checks may help in certain instances, they remain highly flawed, and it is critical that this effort does not provide a false sense of security to our members", she said. Match said it expected to be able to implement the policy in 60 to 90 days.

Mark Brooks: This is MAJOR NEWS for the internet dating industry. The industry has only been considering background checks for the last 7 years, since TRUE launched them in 2004! 7 years! on Match is finally drawing a line in the sand.  Other dating sites will need to step up to the line. Free dating sites and social networks won't be offering background checks. Paid sites will need to in order to compete with Match. Your comments please..

Facebook Sues FriendFinder, Peeved Over FacebookOfSex.com

Posted on April 18, 2011

Facebookofsex.com logo PAID CONTENT – Apr 18 – Facebook has filed a few different trademark lawsuits against sites it doesn’t approve of, like Teachbook and humor site Lamebook. But now a much bigger company is messing with Facebook’s name: adult social networking company FriendFinder Networks, which has launched FacebookOfSex.com. It’s hard to believe that FriendFinder thinks they’re going to get away with operating a website by this name. Facebook is asking to have a bunch of domain names canceled or transfered to its control, including international variants and misspellings, such as: facebookofsex.co.uk, facebooksex.de, facebokofsex.us, fbookofsex.com, facebookfosex.com, facebookofsexysingles.com, facebook-of-sex.com, and many others. It’s also asking for $100,000 in damages for each of those domains, and additional unspecified punitive damages.

Mark Brooks: Someone at FriendFinder considered the upside and downside, and the upside was lots of short term money. Naturally they would assume that Facebook would shut them down at some stage. But what took them so long?

NoLongerLonely.com: Dating Site Aimed At Adults With Mental Health Concerns

Posted on April 18, 2011

Nolongerlonely logo DAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Apr 17 – NoLonger Lonely.com is a dating site especially for adults with mental health concerns. 'I think there is a relief in getting to know someone when both parties are open about their psychiatric issues,' says the site's owner, Jim Leftwich. "The site has been a slow build since 2004 but we've had at least 30 marriages now." Professor Stephen Palmer, director of the Coaching Psychology Unit at City University London, says: 'The downside of a relationship between two individuals with a diagnosis is that sometimes you have to be resilient to support a friend with mental health issues and if you are feeling negative yourself, it can be a challenge.'

Mark Brooks: There are niche dating sites for most every niche these days. This particular site is a great public service. Dating sites excel at helping people get the tough questions out fo the way right up front. One of those questions is, in this case, what kind of mental health conditions do you have?

Tigits Dials Up Online Dating Opportunity

Posted on April 15, 2011

Tigits logo THE GLOBE AND MAIL – Apr 15 – When Sean Miller got into the online dating world, he saw opportunity in providing people with second telephone numbers that could be used just for dating, and would be less expensive and easier to get than through a major telephone company. It took him 18 months to develop Tigits. Mr. Miller was also able to bring on Bruce Croxon, co-founder and former CEO of Lavalife as an adviser and investor. The service, which includes voice mail and will soon offer text messaging, costs $9.99 a month after a 30-day free trial. Tigits’ customers get a second telephone number that works just like their regular number. They can block callers, switch number and stop their service at any time.

Mark Brooks: Vumber came three years earlier with the same solution. It's good for end users, but not good for dating sites. The service is too disconnected from dating sites.  Match and FriendFinder integrated Jangl (which was later sold to Jajah). Jangl/Jajah is a better solution for dating sites because it keeps users connected to the dating site. Users simply hit a 'call this person' button on Match. (Full Disclosure: Vumber and Jangl are prior clients of Courtland Brooks)

For Many Chinese Men, No Deed Means No Dates

Posted on April 15, 2011

15bachelorspan-articleLarge NY TIMES – Apr 14 – Chinese men increasingly find themselves lovelorn and despairing as a growing number of women hold out for a mate with a deed. More than 70% of single women in a recent survey said they would tie the knot only with a prospective husband who owned a home. Among the qualities they seek in a mate, 50% said that financial considerations ranked above all else, with good morals and personality falling beneath the top three requirements. (Not surprisingly, 54% of single men ranked beauty first, according to the report, which surveyed 32,000 people and was jointly issued by the Chinese Research Association of Marriage and Family and the All-China Women’s Federation. Zhang Yanhong, a matchmaking consultant at Baihe, one of the country’s most popular dating sites, said many disheartened men had simply dropped out of the marriage market.

Online Daters Growing Weary

Posted on April 15, 2011

Plentyoffish new logo VANCOUVER SUN – Apr 15 – Online dating is a booming business in Canada, where PlentyofFish gets ~105M hits a month. But according to U.S.-based Socialone.com, growth in the industry is trending downward, dropping 58% this year alone. It could be that it’s too much work. The solution may be to hire some help. Scott Valdez offers that through his international online service, Virtual Dating Assistants. Valdez’s dating assistants, a group of professional writers and coaches, will take care of all that onerous administrative stuff: Creating an online brand, writing the profile, and sending the engaging emails. VDA offers several different packages starting at ~$400 and going up to $1440. Dates guaranteed.

by Denise Ryan
The full article was originally published at Vancouver Sun, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Sure, uniques are down, but revenue isn't.  The nature of the industry is changing, and social networking is drawing users away.  But idating is a more focused and refined premium experience.

Dear Match.com, What Have You Done With Headlines?

Posted on April 14, 2011

New profile layout on Match with Small font headline with picture removed OPW – Apr 14 – IDEA is building a panel of internet dating power users. Here's feedback from one of our friendly internet dating power users.
___

Hey Mark, Match has been experimenting for awhile on some profiles with a new layout which is worse than the old one but they finally changed over to it. Can you you believe they would go with a layout where the "HEADLINE" is in smaller fonts than everything else on the page? (see enclosed pic)  Do they know what the word "headline" means? A headline is supposed to be A HEADLINE. Look at a newspaper, how many headlines are 10 or more words? The layout was better before. Now it's just more clicks to accomplish the same thing.
