Love In The 21st Century

Posted on February 13, 2012

Mysinglefriend logoHERALD SCOTLAND – Feb 12 - With the online dating industry predicted to be worth £150M annually in the UK by 2014, it is big business. Eight years ago TV presenter Sarah Beeny set up the site Mysinglefriend.com, where singles are "recommended" to potential love interests by friends. It has now ~1M users and has recently launched in Ireland. Ottokar Rosenberger, UK manager at eHarmony.co.uk, said changes in society such as moving around more and not necessarily having strong social or family networks had helped contribute to the popularity of internet dating.

Badoo: Social Dating

Posted on February 10, 2012

Badoo logoNPR MARKETPLACE – Feb 10 – Social networks got popular and we got much more comfortable sharing our personal lives online so much that entrepreneurs are now latching onto our social networks to create social dating sites like Badoo.com. Broadcasting your private life is key to Badoo’s success. Sites like eHarmony spend millions of dollars on advertising to attract new users. Badoo doesn’t have to. Its users spread the word. Mark Brooks, a consultant to the online dating industry: "Yes they’re not paying so much to acquire users. In fact in many cases they’re not paying anything". The company says it’s on track to take in $150M a year.

Love Is In The Air With KLM

Posted on February 10, 2012

Klm meetseat pictureCNN – Feb 10 – Launched this month as part of KLM online booking service, "Meet & Seat" allows passengers to link their Facebook or LinkedIn profiles to the seats they choose. The idea is that when picking an aisle or a window seat you can see if the person next to you has similar interests and the potential for stimulating conversation, or if you'll need extra batteries for your noise-cancelling headphones. So far KLM is only letting passengers on flights from Amsterdam to New York, San Francisco and Sao Paolo use the service. The airline says all personal profile details are deleted from the airline's systems 48-hours after the flight.

Singles Are Embracing A New Age Of ‘Dating’

Posted on February 10, 2012

Urbandiversion logoMERCURY NEWS – Feb 10 – A dinner date with a group of people maximizes the odds of a connection. Table for Six utilizes the talents of dining coordinators and matchmakers to hand-select three women and three men to have dinner together. "You go to the dinner and everybody meets each other and that's it–you see what happens," says Marc Paiva, COO. Table for Six was founded in 1997 by his wife Julie Paiva, who is now retired from the business. "Having six people can also provide a sense of security in a new environment." Another good way to meet someone is to participate in events with other singles. With an office in Santa Clara serving ~1K members, Events and Adventures was created for single professionals to meet other singles. The club does not have marriage statistics, but members do get married, says Barb Morgen, Events and Adventures' director of membership and marketing emeritus. About nine years ago, Lance Evander realized most of his friends were married, making it a challenge to meet new people. "One of the main reasons I started Urban Diversion in 2003 was to provide a more natural way for people to meet each other." Nearly 100 people have been engaged or married from the club, but dating is not the main focus, he says. Urban Diversion welcomes married and single members.

Features We Like: Match Email Filtering

Posted on February 10, 2012

Match.com logo dalsiOPW – Feb 9 – Women especially are often inundated with lots of emails from guys they are not interested in. Match.com has done a good job with their email filtering. Users can select what they'd like to filter out (smoking, age, location, body, etc.) Their inbox is split in two – regular inbox and filtered inbox. Messages from those who don't meet user's requirements, will go to their filter inbox. If they happen to respond to someone from their filter inbox, Match.com will move that message to their regular inbox.

More Christians Seeking Love Connection Online

Posted on February 10, 2012

CBN.COM – Feb 9 – Sam Moorcroft is CEO of ChristianCafe.com, an online dating site solely for believers. He appeared on Christian television CBN.com this week. He said the "old ways" of finding a mate at church or through friends are "falling by the way side." "The advantage of using a Christian only dating site is that that's our entire purpose," Moorcroft explained. "When you're on a site like Match.com or other secular ones you have to troll through all of these other profiles to figure out, 'Is the person I'm interested in actually a true believer.'"
