Use Exclamation Points, Says Zoosk

Zoosk logo May 15MASHABLE – Feb 28 – Zoosk recently reported on the success of opening messages: A message with an exclamation point was 10% more likely to receive a response. Comedian and author Sam Greenspan wrote 11 Points Guide to Hooking Up and talked about the importance of grammar and punctuation in online dating conversations. "Exclamation points are the most important, but dangerous," he says, "The best strategy is using one exclamation point whenever something you write might be interpreted the wrong way without."

Indians Embrace Dating Apps

TrulymadlySTRAITSTIMES – Feb 28 – Tinder started gaining traction in 2013, opening an office in India last month, while Indian dating apps like TrulyMadly, Woo, and Floh.in – which all promise a more lasting relationship – have since gained attention in a country where over half of the 1.25B population is under 35. The apps are popular with those between the ages of 18 and 34. TrulyMadly has 500k active users. Tinder has seen more than a 400% increase in downloads over the last year. Over the last six months alone, it has gone from 7.5M to 14M swipes every day. Another app, Woo, grew from 10k users in its first month in the southern city of Bangalore to 2M subscribers across the cities when it launched in 2014. It promises "connections not swipes", targeting those aged 25 and above.

Momo Receives A Commitment From Alibaba To Go Private

Momo app logoSEEKING ALPHA – Feb 24 – Momo named Alibaba's vice chairman Joseph Tsai to its board. This move represents a commitment from the Chinese giant to help Momo's management to take it private. Last summer, executives at Momo proposed to acquire all of the American shares they don't already own for $18.90 each in cash. The management of Momo currently owns about 48% of the company's outstanding shares and has 84% of the voting power. Momo is known to be a Chinese version of Tinder.

Match group jan 16HUFFINGTON POST – Feb 23 – Despite its success, Match's IPO was not without controversy. Questions were raised by IAC's decision to include two educational companies (The Princeton Review and Tutor) along with the dating sites in the newly-formed Match Group. By mingling two educational companies that feature large student populations with dating sites, does Match intend for a student's personal information to be accessed by those dating sites? According to the policy user's information can be shared "with vendors and other third parties" – sites like Tinder and Match.com.

FriendFinder Networks Sold Its Penthouse Subsidiary

Ffn logoBUSINESS WIRE – Feb 24 – FriendFinder Networks have sold all of the shares of the companies comprising FFN's Penthouse enterprise to Penthouse Global Media. I asked FFN's CEO for comment. Here's the inside track. "We decided that given our intense focus on dating and cams, we weren't in the best position to give Penthouse the undivided attention it deserves, and Kelly Holland is really passionate about giving it this undivided attention and raised the money to do a management buy-out. We're going to be continuing with live caming of Penthouse models so this arrangement was really a win-win for both parties."
