Match Group On How To Improve Users’ Retention

Posted on September 22, 2016

Match-Group appsAPP ANNIE – Sep 22 – There's an art to reducing churn, but there's also a science. Here is a Q&A with two experts in user retention at Match Group: Sushil Sharma, SVP of Product, Analytics and Design, and Ram Reddi, Director of Mobile Product.

Q: What can you implement to improving retention?
A: A features that users will love and want to use every day, also push notifications that bring the user back to the app.

Q: What do you A/B test to prevent churn and increase retention?
A: We thoroughly test every major feature and change. We are constantly testing onboarding and checkout flows, app navigation, profile setup, search features and push notifications.

Q: For your app, what is a "loyal" user?
A: A "loyal" user for us, even though short-lived, is one who rates their dating matches, and responds to interest from prospective dates in a timely way.

Q: How do you benchmark your retention and churn rates? Are there specific external tools, resources or methods you use?
A: We use App Annie Intelligence to measure how we stack against our competition in terms of downloads, engagement and new releases. We monitor downloads, engagement and app releases of our competitors on a biweekly basis.

Q: What are some strategies you think we'll see emerging in the next year for keeping retention high?
A: Artificial intelligence and location-aware notifications. Pokémon GO is a good example of a high retention product that has completely brand new hooks.

Tinder stacksTECH CRUNCH – Sep 22 – Tinder is launching a new application for social polling. It is called "Tinder Stacks". The new feature will allow users to swipe right or left on anything they want – whether that's polling their friends which photo should be their new profile picture or what outfit should they wear tonight. While Tinder Stacks is discoverable though Apple's iMessage App Store, it's not technically a standalone app. Instead, the new app is included with the flagship Tinder app.

Hinge CEO Is Not Afraid Of Making Big Changes

Posted on September 20, 2016

Hinge logo new dec 13BUSINESS INSIDER – Sep 17 – When Hinge was floundering in 2012, Justin McLeod spent $25k on a huge 2,000-person launch party to kick-start its growth. The company only had $32k left in the bank at the time. It worked. Now McLeod hopes another big bet can save Hinge. The app is bleeding users and has plummeted to a 1.5-star rating as McLeod and his team has been working on something totally new. The new product will be unveiled this week.

GreenLight Dating App: PokemonGo Meets Tinder

Posted on September 16, 2016

Greenlight dating app logoOPW INTERVIEW – Sep 16 – GreenLight, a brand new dating app, has just launched in San Francisco. GreenLight works pretty much like Tinder with a few interesting features including a map that allows users to see which locations have the most singles in real time, their relationship status, and how attractive they are. We have interviewed GreenLight founder Tommy Wolf.

What is your background?
BS in Mathematics from Chapman University. Currently working on my MS in Predictive Analytics in North Western's online program. I worked as a clerk for a law firm right out of college and I'm currently a Data Analyst for a real estate brokerage.

What inspired you to launch a dating app?
I wanted to work for myself, and I've been active in the online dating scene ever since graduating college. I thought by handpicking my favorite features from different dating apps, along with adding some features I wished they had, I could make a better dating app than any other that currently exists. So it seemed like a good route to take for beginning my entrepreneurial career.

How is GreenLight different from Tinder?
Greenlight has all the same basic functionality of typical dating apps, (swipe matching, messaging, profile visitors, etc), but additionally we display the locations of groups of singles that meet each user's specifications. We employ a proprietary profile rating algorithm that shows the average attractiveness of people in those groups from 1-10. We also allow each user to specify their relationship status on their profile and on the map as green (single), yellow (it's complicated), or red (taken) to give users an additional search filter. Lastly, we don't offer any premium memberships. All features are free to everyone.

Do you disclose users' location?
Yes and no. Each user is displayed as a green, yellow, or red bulb, (depending on their relationship status) on the map. The "Profiles" tab at the bottom will display a list of profiles for each bulb, but the list will not be displayed if there are 5 or fewer bulbs displayed on the map. The purpose of Greenlight is to let users see where they should go based on where groups are, not individuals. Every user also has the option to not let other users message them through the map, or not appear on the map at all if they don't want to.

How are you funded?
Greenlight has been entirely self funded to this point, but I have some meetings set up with potential investors, so hopefully that won't be the case for much longer.

What is your goal for the next 6 months?
Secure investors, hire an Internet advertising firm to begin a marketing campaign, and begin coding for additional features for when we eventually monetize.

Should Dating Apps Have HIV Filters?

Posted on September 15, 2016

Grindr hiv surveyCNN – Sep 15 – This summer, Grindr caught some criticism for asking in a user survey "What is your HIV status?" and "How would you feel if Grindr allowed you to filter the guys you see by HIV status?" "Dating sites shouldn't ask for HIV status, because there's no way to guarantee privacy," said Daniel Reeders, a Ph.D. candidate who studies HIV stigma at Australian National University. Although an HIV filter could have the benefit of letting HIV-positive people meet others, it also could create a false sense of security. A dating app filter could lead HIV-negative people to think that the filtered matches consist of only HIV-negative people. From there, they might engage in unprotected sex.
