Several Trackers Found In Popular Android Apps

Posted on November 27, 2017

Doubleclick by googleTHE INTERCEPT – Nov 27 – Researchers at Yale Privacy Lab and French nonprofit Exodus Privacy have found that weather, flashlight, rideshare, and dating apps, among others, are infested with dozens of different types of trackers collecting information to better target advertising. Among the Android apps identified by the researchers were Tinder and OkCupid. Tinder uses five trackers in addition to its own which means the company has been able to make use of behavior analytics, and also to accept payment from shaving supply company Gillette for highly targeted research. One of the most ubiquitous in-app trackers is made by Google's DoubleClick ad platform, which targets users by location and across devices and channels, segments users based on online behavior, connects to personally identifiable information, and offers data sharing and integration with various advertising systems. DoubleClick's tracker is found in Tinder and OkCupid. The most invasive tracker is Fidzup, a France-based mobile performance marketing platform for brick and mortar retailers. Not all trackers are equally invasive, though many grab more information than they arguably should. For example, Google-owned Crashlytics is presumably just a crash reporter, but it does much more than simply performing analytics on app logs. The app, used by Tinder and OkCupid, can also link users across multiple cookies and devices. AppsFlyer (used by Tinder) does fraud prevention and protects from malware, but also fingerprints devices by their IDs, tracks users across datasets to circumvent the fragmentation caused by users with different devices, and tracks which users install which apps. Braze, used by OkCupid, can track users by location, target them across devices and channels, and serve targeted advertising based on consumer actions.

Brands Losing Nearly 27% Of Paid-Search Clicks To Affiliates

Posted on November 23, 2017

Adgooroo logoSEARCH MARKETING DAILY – Nov 23 – Affiliate sites have had a love-hate relationship with advertisers for decades, but recently these marketers are becoming more aggressive in capturing and directing the search traffic through their sites. AdGooroo analyzed paid-search clicks on 164 non-branded online dating keywords running through desktop campaigns, including "dating sites," "online dating" and "best dating site" from Sep 1 through Nov 12, 2017. The average cost per click for the online dating keyword group during the month came in at $3.67, but the affiliate sites averaged a far higher CPC at $6.36, according to AdGooroo data. In theory, advertisers believe affiliates who send traffic to the brand's site drive up their cost of acquisition, said Jim Leichenko, director of marketing at AdGooroo. AdGooroo points to three sites in particular. Capturing a combined 26.7% of all clicks on the dating keywords, Top10BestDatingSites.com ranked No. 1 with a 10.5% click share. Consumer-Rankings.com came in at No. 3 with 8.3% click share. TheTop10Sites.com at No. 4 came in with a 7.9% click share, beating all other advertisers except for Match.com, which ranked at No. 2 with an 8.9% click share.

Business Tips From Vana Koutsomitis, The Apprentice Runner-up

Posted on November 23, 2017

DatePlay Vana Koutsomitis LinkedInSTARTUPS.CO.UK – Nov 23 – Coming second to Joseph Valente back in 2015 with her gamified dating app DatePlay, Koutsomitis is quizzed by Startups about her business progress. Currently operating out of Wayra, Telefónica UK's tech accelerator, the DatePlay app uses quizzes and multiple choice questions, coupled with a more traditional matching algorithm, to help find users potential prospects. The app is looking to add a freemium model in the next couple of months. The app is currently employing three members of staff, one in development and two in marketing. Running her start-up alongside her husband, Joris Magenti, Koutsomitis has found that going into business with her significant other has made the process a lot more cohesive. DatePlay closed a £219,570 crowdfunding round on Seedrs from 390 investors in return for a share of 5.58% equity. "We plan to do private fundraising next time. The crowdfunding experience was good but it was a very arduous process", said Vana.

Her best business tips:

  1. Drown out the noise – Take people's advice with a grain of salt. A lot of entrepreneurs get overwhelmed by negativity and they get down very quickly.
  2. Have a vision – I'm a big fan of writing things down. Yes, your plans will change, but at least you'll have something to go back to if you get too distracted.
  3. Choose your team members wisely – One of the biggest challenges is a cultural fit. I'd highly encourage you to work with people and hire people that you actually get along with.
  4. Join a community – In my case, Joris and I joined Wayra. They have given us advice and they have nurtured us.
