Ventura County HIV Increase Triggers Concerns About Hookup Apps

Posted on February 28, 2018

Hiv testVCSTAR – Feb 27 – Provisional data shows 70 new local cases of HIV were diagnosed in 2017, public health officials said at a meeting of an HIV/AIDS Coalition of Ventura County, Calif. In 2016, there were 35. A year before that, there were 32. The surge has continued into February, said Lynn Bartosh, AIDS surveillance coordinator for the Ventura County Public Health Department. "The number of new cases has heightened," she said. "Most of them talk about Grindr." There are other dating apps, too. Use of hookup dating apps that turns into unprotected sex is not the only reason for the HIV surge but is part of it, said Sal Fuentes, coalition chairman and HIV/AIDS prevention advocate. A 2016 study from UCLA researchers suggested Grindr can be used as a platform for getting tested. Researchers advertised free HIV self-test kits on the site to LA men on the app for a month. ~300 men requested the test.

How Grindr Evolved Into More For Its 4M Users

Posted on February 28, 2018

Grindr logo new dec 13PRWEEK – Feb 27 – When Peter Sloterdyk joined Grindr as VP of global marketing, the app had just under 3M daily active users and is now creeping its way toward 4M. Sloterdyk explains the main issue was that Grindr was considered to be mainly a gay hookup app. While this assumption is not completely incorrect, the brand wants people to know it is that, but also "so much more." "Over the past year, Grindr has launched a gay emoji keyboard to help users communicate in a way they are already using in their lives. It also unveiled Into, an online magazine, to provide people with information, editorial content, and stories with global perspectives. The brand is also continuing its Slumbr event series, a 36-hour party that helps people "experientially connect with Grindr and see us in a different way," Sloterdyk says. Sloterdyk is also changing up Grindr's marketing strategy for India and its surrounding countries to ensure the brand has an on-the-ground presence there.

Tinder For Teens: Yubo Could Open The Door To Online Predators

Posted on February 27, 2018

Yubo logoPIX11 – Feb 26 – Yubo is marketed as an app for kids ages 13 – 17 to make new friends, but with the swipe feature, the app has become known as the Tinder for teens. Originally created early last year as Yellow, the app boasts ~15M users worldwide. According to the child safety website PureSight, one in five teenagers say they have received an unwanted sexual solicitation via the web, and 75% of teens are willing to share personal information online. In almost all underage sexual predator cases, the teens have gone willingly to meet with them. What's also new to the app is a live-streaming option where teens chat about anything and everything to complete strangers. Since rebranding in December, the company has increased its security features to include technology to detect fake profile pictures; a child online safety consultant; a required mobile number to register, which is recorded and verified; and a reporting abuse feature to inform the company of inappropriate activity.

Intermarriage Agencies Are Doing Big Business At The China-Russia Border

Posted on February 27, 2018

Chinese russian weddingGLOBAL TIMES – Feb 26 – During the most recent matchmaking trip organized by Chinese agent Golden Marriage in Vladivostok, a Russian city not far from Russia's borders with China, five of the 10 Chinese single men were matched successfully with a future spouse. As China and Russia usher in a sub-national cooperation exchange, the two countries are also extending their cooperation to nongovernmental levels and deepening their friendship through facilitating the folk friendship. Intermarriage is now becoming part of it. A keyword search for "China-Russia transnational marriage" on Baidu, the leading searching engine in China, shows various dating agencies providing massive opportunities for "Chinese rich single men" to find their "perfect transnational marriage". ~15M men in China between the ages of 35 and 59 will not be able to find wives by 2020. Bachelors have to pay 29,800 yuan ($4,683) for a typical six-day trip to Vladivostok to meet Russian women, according to Golden Marriage. Some agents admit that only brides from less economically developed areas of Russia or Ukraine can be a "hot import" to China.

Women Are More Attractive In Groups

Posted on February 24, 2018

Girls partyingBUSINESS INSIDER – Feb 20 – Research shows that women seem more attractive when they're in a group compared to when they're alone. It could be because when people look at a group, their brains average out the faces they see. This psychological trick is known as "the cheerleader effect."
