IQ Elite Looks for Partner/Merger

Posted on March 31, 2019

Iqelite iconOPW INTERVIEW – Mar 31 – Dr Eike Post founded IQ Elite, a dating site for smart folks, in 2010. I interviewed him to find out where IQ Elite is going now. – Mark Brooks

What is the USP of IQ Elite?
IQ Elite was established in 2010 as a matchmaking site that uses as the main matchmaking criterion not a personality test but an intelligence test.

Thus, we together with the SRH University Heidelberg developed an online IQ test to match users based on IQ. Our matchmaking is complemented by other psychometric tests, such as personality, emotional intelligence and love style test.

What is the track record of IQ Elite?
Since its inception in 2010 over 20 million people have taken psychometric tests on IQ Elite and over 8 million people have joined the site.

During this time many couples have told us about the love they found on IQ Elite, including getting married and forming a family.

What does a typical IQ Elite user look like?
The concept of IQ Elite seems to resonate more with the older generation, and thus our active users are mostly above 35.

In terms of geography users are primarily from France, Italy, Poland, Romania and Latin America.

Are you profitable?
Yes, we are profitable but at a low level. However, over the last 10 years around 1 million euro have been earned.

Unfortunately, revenue is slowly declining. This has to do with the fact that we do not have a comparable density of users as similar sites such as eharmony, eDarling and Parship.

Why do you want to sell to or partner with a larger player?
To be honest, after working on the company for almost 10 years, the team members would like to move on. Also, in order to become profitable we reduced our IT development team four years ago, and stopped improving the product. That means that our dating product, that is build on Python and React is not optimized, buggy and not mobile friendly.

Thus currently we are faced with the tough decision to either invest substantially into the product or merge with another player who already has an attractive product.

What sales prices are you looking to get?
It is hard to say: On the one hand we have over 8 million registered users, almost 150,000 monthly visitors and are profitable, so we were hoping to sell for at least half a million.

On the other hand, looking at other M&A transactions it seems that the price to revenue ratio in the dating industry is low. For example, eharmony, with a cumulative revenue of over 1 billion USD was apparently acquired for only 85 million USD. Also, our users and revenue have been declining.

For those reason, in an outright sale we would want to get just 250k euro so that we could pay back our investors, while in a partnership, we would be Ok with 100k euro upfront and an earn-out that depends on the future revenue. Interested parties can contact us at office@intelligentelite.com.

Posted on March 30, 2019

Brunei flagTHE GUARDIAN – Mar 29 – Brunei is to begin imposing death by stoning as a punishment for gay sex and adultery from next week. Brunei, which has adopted a more conservative form of Islam in recent years, first announced in 2013 its intention to introduce sharia law, the Islamic legal system that imposes strict corporal punishments. It was a directive of the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, who is one of the world's richest leaders with a personal wealth of about $20B (£15B) and has held the throne since 1967.

Rela, a Chinese Lesbian Dating App, Exposed 5M User Profiles

Posted on March 28, 2019

Rela logoTECH CRUNCH – Rela, a popular dating app for gay and queer women, has exposed millions of user profiles and private data because a server wasn't protected with a password. Rela disappeared from app stores in May 2017 after it was reportedly shut down by Chinese regulators, though the government never confirmed it took action. But the app returned a year later, according to its app store listing, on a different cloud provider. Victor Gevers, a security researcher at the GDI Foundation, found the exposed database this week, containing ~5.3M app users. It's believed the database had been exposed since June 2018, a month after the app returned, Gevers said. Each record included their nicknames, dates of birth, height and weight, ethnicity and sexual preferences and interests. A company spokesperson confirmed the database had been secured.

U.S. Orders Chinese Firm to Sell Dating App Grindr Over Blackmail Risk

Posted on March 28, 2019

Grindr mobileWALL STREET JOURNAL – Mar 27 – U.S. national-security officials have ordered a Chinese company to sell gay-dating app Grindr, citing the risk that the personal data it collects could be exploited by Beijing to blackmail individuals with security clearances, according to people familiar with the situation. Beijing Kunlun Tech Co. Ltd., which acquired a majority stake in Grindr in 2016, would have no choice but to share information on Grindr users if demanded by the Chinese government, U.S. officials believe. That triggered the recent order from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., known as Cfius. National-security experts said a Chinese company would never be allowed to buy a company like Facebook Inc., for example.

"If Cfius only applies to companies China acquires from the U.S., and not companies China builds, what can it possibly solve?" said Geoffrey Cook, CEO of The Meet Group.

Potential buyers for Grindr could include Match. Mark Brooks, a consultant in the dating industry, said Spark Networks and The Meet Group could be among other potential contenders.

Grindr Defeats Appeal Over Harassment on Gay Dating App

Posted on March 28, 2019

Paragraph-symbol-rulesREUTERS – Mar 27 – A U.S. federal appeals court refused to hold Grindr liable to a New York man who said his former boyfriend used the gay dating app to post fake profiles, in a harassment campaign that caused 1,000 men to approach the victim for sex. The man sued Grindr in Jan. 2017, and a federal judge dismissed his case a year later, prompting the appeal. His lawyer Tor Ekeland said he was "disappointed but not surprised" by Wednesday's decision because courts are "extremely deferential to big tech" when interpreting the CDA (Communications Decency Act). "Apps are being used to stalk, rape and murder. Under the court's reading of the CDA, big tech companies don't have responsibility to do anything about it, even if they know it is happening. Congress needs to amend this statute," he said.

Dating App Hily – One of the Fastest Growing Dating App

Posted on March 28, 2019

Hily iconIRISH TECH NEWS – Mar 27 – Within just 1.5 years after the launch, Hily's team got the app to the top in its category on Apple Store, getting more daily downloads than Bumble in the US and Tinder in the UK. Hily's developers are paying attention to their users' opinions, allowing them to take part in the app development. Hily is very similar to any other dating app out there; however, taking a closer look, you will see plenty of things that make it stand out among its competitors:

  • All users are verified by moderators
  • Apart from swiping, users can also watch stories.
  • The app offers icebreakers to make the start of the conversation easier.

The unique feature of the app is the usage of artificial intelligence. The machine analyses users, likes, matches, and dialogues to create a personalized and best-matching set of potential partners. The more the users swipe, the smarter the machine gets, and the higher are their chances to find someone.

Hily is now planning to launch in Australia, New Zealand, France, and others. This takes a lot of time and effort. At the same time, we are working on the app a lot – adapting it to new countries, making it more inclusive and user-friendly. Very soon we are also planning to make it compatible with different gadgets like smart watches for example.
