Amazing Decisions – Courtland Brooks New-Book-of-the-Month for July

Posted on July 31, 2019

Amazing DecisionsOPW – July 30 – Hot off the press in July, the luminary Behavioral Economist Dan Ariely has co-authored this wonderful decision making primer, in cartoon form! Amazing Decisions: The Illustrated Guide to Improving Business Deals and Family Meals. Dan likes dating, and I think you'll like his new book.

If you like Behavioral Economics, please join my community at BehavioralEconomist.com as well. 1200+ business behavioral economists and practitioners have gathered there. I think BE gives us a nice nomenclature and new language to explain a lot of what we see in user behavior from our AB tests.

Match Group Shareholders Swipe Right for Bigger Margins

Posted on July 30, 2019

Match group logo jan 2017FORBES – July 30 – Match Group has begun telling its Android customers to enter payments details directly at the Match Group website, avoiding the Google Play store fee. This is a huge win for Match shareholders. Epic Games, maker of the popular gaming platform Fortnite, avoided the Play Store altogether last year. And Spotify is in the midst of a legal dispute with Apple. It is encouraging customers to make payments directly. It's the same tactic Netflix is now using. Apple made $257M scraping fees from Netflix in 2018. Epic Games, Spotify and Netflix have one common denominator: scale. Their businesses are so big, they don't need Apple and Google to succeed. You can now put Match Group in the same category. All in, Match had 8.6M paying subscribers at the end of the Q1 of 2019. That’s up 16% YOY. Revenue in the Q1 rallied 14% to $465M, putting the company on track to record $1.8B in 2019 revenue. Based on sales momentum, the stock could trade to $125 in two years, a gain of 65% from current levels.

How Facebook Romance Scam Ended up With Tragedy

Posted on July 30, 2019

Scammers1NEW YORK TIMES – July 30 – Renee Holland befriended a soldier on Facebook and sent him thousands of dollars. She became entwined in a global fraud that Facebook and the US military appear helpless to stop. Many scammers operate from their phones in Nigeria and other African nations, working several victims at the same time. Facebook has become a one-stop shop. It has plenty of photos of American service members. Creating an impostor account can be easy. Facebook groups for single women and widows are full of targets. To her friends and family, Ms. Holland was known as trusting and impulsive. She sent her Facebook friend money for airfare, partly with credit cards, without her husband's knowledge. He never showed up. The Hollands lost $26K to $30K. Mr. Holland was arrested on domestic violence charges in August 2018. On Dec. 23, 2018, he shot and killed Renee and her father at their new home. Mr. Holland then turned the gun on himself. There are no exact figures on how many service members and civilians have been affected. The F.B.I. said it received ~18,500 complaints from victims of romance or similar internet scams last year, with reported losses exceeding $362M, up 71% from 2017. Facebook said it constantly removes impostor accounts.

Posted on July 30, 2019

Qiao qiao screenshotRADII CHINA – July 30 – Chinese company Momo, who also owns dating app Tantan, is launching new dating app Qiao Qiao, where personality comes first. The biggest hallmark of the app is that it blurs out profile pictures when users are first matched; only through chatting and interacting may they request to reveal each other's photo.
