Tinder, Bumble Profiles Required for Entry at Some Texas Frat Parties

Posted on August 14, 2019

Bumble fraternitiesHOUSTON CHRONICLE – Aug 14 – When the doors open at some University of Texas fraternity parties, young men and women need to hand over two items: a state-issued ID and their phone, with their Tinder University profile pulled up. If the students do not have a Tinder U profile, they are asked to create one even if they are in a steady relationship. No app, no entry. Fraternities are deciding whether they're a Bumble house or a Tinder house, and signing exclusive contracts. The dating apps provide money to cover production costs for parties, branded signage and swag. The frats provide access to thousands of potential new users Tinder and Bumble declined to specify the scope of their campus involvement, though both said their apps have college marketing events across the country. But there's a difference between promoting your app and forcing someone to become a user, said Millie Lopez Stuessy, whose daughter attends UT. "I have a problem with that, because I don't think that should be necessary to enjoy the event," Lopez Stuessy said.

UniformDating.com Is Being Sued for Using Married Officer’s Selfie in Online Ad

Posted on August 14, 2019

Uniformdating iconNY POST – Aug 12 – NSI Holdings Limited, a London-based dating company ripped off a married Florida cop's photo to promote their dating site – UniformDating.com, leaving him "furious" amid unexpected questions from friends and his wife, according to a new lawsuit. David Guzman, a police officer, claims NSI Holdings stole a personal Facebook photo from his private account and then misappropriated the image on the dating site. Guzman contacted the company to demand that his snaps be removed immediately, but NSI Holdings demanded that he provide proof of his identity before taking them down. Guzman complied with that request, yet the images are still being used by the site in social media spots, according to Guzman's lawsuit, which was filed in US District Court in Miami. In response, NSI Holdings sought for the suit to be dismissed in a court filing on Friday, claiming Guzman or someone close to him actually created the UniformDating.com profile, adding that he's not in an "enviable" position.

More Tech Companies Are Launching ‘Lite’ Apps

Posted on August 14, 2019

Tinder lite screenshotCNBC – Aug 12 – With 6.47B people living in developing economies, there's a lot of potential for technology firms to tap on. Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter and even LinkedIn have pushed out "lite" versions – smaller and simpler iterations of their platforms. Last month, Spotify Lite officially launched in 36 markets, while Tinder has announced plans to launch its own "lite" app. A Pew Research Center survey reported that 27% of adults in 11 emerging market countries say they have a smartphone, but not a tablet or computer at home. In the U.S., ~75% of adults own desktops or laptops, while 50% own tablet computers. The prevalence of fixed-broadband internet access is also lower in developing countries, while mobile data continues to be expensive for users in those markets, according to a 2017 GSM Association report. Tinder Lite will take up 25 times less space on smartphones and consume less mobile data. Match Group expects Asia will make up 25% of its portfolio's total revenue by 2023.

Tinder Sponsored Video About Finding Dates on Vacation Is Raising Safety Concerns

Posted on August 14, 2019

Summer mckeenBUZZFEED NEWS – Aug 12 – YouTuber Summer Mckeen is facing ethical concerns over a recent sponsored video with Tinder in which she films herself on two idealistic double dates with total strangers while traveling – and then saying she "recommends" doing this. Many are worried that the sponcon – published to her ~2.4M followers mostly comprising young women – is promoting a habit that could be potentially dangerous. Some also suspect that the video was scripted and doesn't represent an authentic experience with using the app.

Sending Unwanted Sexually Explicit Photos to Become a Crime in Texas

Posted on August 14, 2019

ParagrafCHRISTIAN NEWS – Aug 13 – A Texas bill that will make sending unwanted sexually explicit photos a criminal offense is set to become law on Sept. 1. Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 2789 into law on June 10 after it passed the House 122-12 in April and unanimously in the Senate in May. Violations would be a Class C misdemeanor and punishable by up to $500 in fines. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Morgan Meyer, R-Dallas, and received the backing of the dating app Bumble. "Sending a lewd photo to someone that has not requested it or someone you don't know is no different than exposing yourself to a stranger in public or performing other lewd acts," Meyer said in a statement.
