Dua Signs Romania Partner, Interview With CEO Valon Asani

Posted on October 16, 2020

Dua valon asaniOPW INTERVIEW – Oct 16 – Dua is a dating and networking app for Albanians and diaspora. But that's not the entirety of their business play. They're proving out their app in Albania but then they've been on the prowl for partners to expand to other countries with considerable portions of their natives who form as diaspora around the world. They're uniting diaspora in their apps. Brilliant. We've seen World Singles do something similar in the past with Eligible Greeks and Iranian Personals. Now Dua is following a similar path. Starting with Albanians, and now Romanians. They just announce that they have a partner helping them to expand into Romania (see news). I interviewed CEO/Founder Valon Asani. – Mark Brooks

How is Dua different from the likes of other matchmaking and online dating apps? What is your focus?
260 million people are living outside the country they were born in. We are on a mission to revolutionize the way how globally fragmented communities connect with each other. We understand the importance of the community and how to connect people living in diasporas with their home countries. Diaspora Intelligence is the new way of operating diaspora engagement and interconnecting people of global communities.

Our focus is not only in niche markets, but we have a hyper-focus on niche markets with a huge diaspora. Our Diaspora Intelligence Platform is made to connect people from the same community within the diaspora and with their home country. Specific features like 'Change virtual location', 'Hot Places' & 'Cross-Path' make that possible.

Why is Romania your next partner-vertical?
Romania is a super interesting market, over 26 million people and 6.6 million Romanians living in the diaspora. In Europe, Romania is the third largest remittance recipient. The diaspora is well connected and sends over 4 billion Euro yearly back to the home country. 10% yearly growth in social media users. The country is investing billions in digitalization. A perfect match for our matchmaking technology with our local partners in Romania. We started with the Albanian market (dua.com) and the Romanians have a similar culture and therefore the differences are minimal, which makes it easier for us to enter this market.

What are you looking for in an ideal partner?
We're looking for marketing partners who understand the local culture and help to connect their diasporas. People with an entrepreneur spirit, well connected, understanding the value of technology and matchmaking. These are the basics. From that point, we can start talking about how to implement our Diaspora Intelligence Platform with our partner into the next market.

What will Dua look like in 2 years time?
We will have crossed 10 million users in 4 different countries with big diasporas. Our Diaspora Intelligence Technology is changing the way how global communities are connected.

One day, all people who got separated from their communities will have the opportunity to connect again with their community members. Anywhere. Anytime. Anyone. People of socially connected communities are more likely to thrive, to love, to make an impact. Social impact. Business impact. Positive impact. Sources: dua.solutions & dua.com/en/

Q&A With Kate Manolis, COO of PlentyOfFish

Posted on October 16, 2020

Pof kate manolis linkedinAUTHORITY MAGAZINE – Oct 13 – Kate spent the past 12 years helping drive POF to be one of the world's most popular dating apps.

Q: What led you to this particular career path?
A: I fell into tech completely by accident, starting in a junior role at a small tech company in the early 2000s where I met the founder of Plenty of Fish. I stayed and grew with that company for 5 years until 2008, at which point I was invited to join POF to help it scale.

Q: Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you at PlentyOfFish?
A: The most interesting thing is how we were able to run a company of Plenty of Fish's scale with so few people. Initially, my friends and family responded to my new job with "Oh…why?" and now people respond with "Oh…WOW!". To have lived and worked through that transition has been fascinating.

Q: Why do you think it is so important for a company to have a diverse executive team?
A: Working with people from different backgrounds will ensure more creative, innovative ideas and approaches. I am also proud to work for an organization that has a strong female leadership.

Q: What makes a great executive?
A: A great executive is someone who is capable of recognizing opportunity and setting a vision. It's less about monitoring work or assigning tasks, and more about empowerment. A great executive is someone who has a vision but trusts their team to execute on that vision.

Q: What is the most striking difference between your actual job and how you thought the job would be?
A: I did not imagine POF reaching the scale that it has. When I joined, it was a website run out of an apartment – and I was the first employee. 7 years later, PlentyOfFish would become Canada's 4th biggest tech exit. I did not think I would end up being an executive at a subsidiary of a $30B company.

Q: What are your "5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started"?
1. Expect to work a lot.
2. The job is never done.
3. It's lonely at the top. It's important to build your network outside of your day-to-day team and company.
4. Learning never stops.
5. Hire the right people.

Mark Brooks: I (under Courtland Brooks) was a contractor at POF when Kate came on board as the first employee. Markus was working out of his apartment and it became very apparent he needed someone to help him grow the company personnel and establish a company culture. Kate is a great heart and soul and torch bearer for the POF company culture.

Dating Group CVC Fund, Q&A With Managing Partner Bill Alena

Posted on October 14, 2020

Datingcom group bill alenaFINSMES – Oct 14 – Dating Group, a Malta-based social discovery platform, which operates several online dating brands, raised a $50M fund earlier this year. Dating Group CVC Fund Managing Partner Bill Alena answered questions about its mission and future plans.

Q: What's your background?
A: I've been in the dating and social space for 14 years. Previous to joining Dating Group I was the CRO of The Meet Group for 11 years.

Q: What's the mission behind the fund?
A: It has multiple missions. We want to help the industry grow. We also believe we can be so much more to companies than just the money. Lastly, we want to invest in companies that might be interesting for us to fully acquire in the future.

Q: How does Dating Group CVC fund differentiate from other VC funds investing in dating projects?
A: As a company that already owns over 15 brands in the dating space, we know what we're doing. We hope to offer more than just an investment but access to numerous resources.

Q: What does a startup need for you to invest?
A: We have to believe in that entrepreneur and the team. We are looking for passion and ideally a past history of success. A quality product and vision is vital.

Q: How many companies have you already invested in?
A: We just began the fund in March. To date we've only made two investments.

Q: Why does this industry attract you and keeps you engaged?
A: It's always changing. There's always something new and exciting on the horizon.

Q: How positive are you for the future of the online dating industry?
A: There is a universal need to find love and I expect the industry to continue to grow. I think the pandemic helped us evolve faster than we might have with things like video.

Posted on October 13, 2020

People on their phonesAFP – Oct 13 – Officials in Finland are proposing a law to make sending unsolicited explicit photographs punishable by up to six months in prison. The draft legislation would broaden the definition of sexual harassment to include "harassment verbally, through pictures or messages, taking photos of another or exposing oneself." Currently, Finnish law only recognizes behaviour as sexual harassment if it involves touching. The proposal could be submitted sometime next year. Some territories have taken steps to ban online sexual harassment, including Scotland which outlawed the behaviour in 2010, and Texas which last year introduced a $500 fine for sending unsolicited sexual images.
