Match to Post Q2 Earnings: What’s in Store?

Posted on July 28, 2023

Match GroupYAHOO FINANCE – Match reports on Aug 1 and expects Q2 revenues of $805-$815 million. Zacks Consensus Estimate is $814m, indicating 2.4% growth year over year. Match Q2 performance is likely to have benefited from continued momentum at Tinder and solid performance of Hinge, Pairs and OkCupid.

  • In the first quarter, the number of total payers increased 10% to 16.4 million from the prior-year quarter. Match Group is persistently investing for the improvement of machine learning tools that can efficiently and proactively identify, prevent and eliminate spam.
  • The launch of Archer should boost users.
  • In Q1, Match Group introduced a new feature called 72 hours which promotes more meaningful connections with a time-sensitive experience.
  • The acquisitions video tech company, Hyperconnect and non-dating app Ablo might aid international revenue. Hyperconnect continues to build momentum.
  • Hinge rolled out features which address questions around sexuality and features answers from leading LGBTQIA+ voices. This is likely to have attracted subscribers.

Mark Brooks: I wonder how Match Groups' experiments with high-end value points, i.e. $500 a month, will play out? That move will certainly inspire and impact the industry. I believe we are leaving money (value) on the table. People want more. We need to find new ways to give it to them.

Grindr Employees Move to Unionize for Better Benefits and LGBTQ+ Protection

Posted on July 25, 2023

GrindrBLOOMBERG – Employees of Grindr, the LGBTQ+ dating app, are seeking to unionize under the name "Grindr United" in partnership with the Communications Workers of America. The proposed union, supported by a significant majority of eligible employees, aims to maintain the company's benefits like remote work, paid time off, and trans-inclusive healthcare, and seeks to secure cost-of-living pay increases, gift matching, a professional development budget, and protection against layoffs. The employees hope to ensure pay transparency and wage equality for marginalized communities and maintain the company's vibrant LGBTQ+ culture. This move comes amidst the introduction of nearly 300 anti-LGBTQ bills in the U.S. and allegations of Grindr's CEO supporting anti-LGBTQ politicians.

Housing Crisis Influencing Modern Dating Dynamics

Posted on July 25, 2023

SpareRoom logoTHE GUARDIAN – The ongoing housing crisis is significantly impacting the dynamics of modern dating, according to numerous reports. Some have suggested this could lead to a return of a "Jane Austen-style marriage market," where relationships are formed primarily based on financial and housing security. Data from a 2022 SpareRoom survey found that a quarter of respondents would consider moving in with a partner earlier than planned to save money, while the lack of affordable housing is keeping some couples together even after their relationship has ended.

Seeking.com Unveils Dating Preferences of High-Income Individuals

Posted on July 24, 2023

Seeking logoFORBES – Seeking.com, a luxury dating service, conducted a study that offered insights into the dating habits of the ultra-wealthy. According to their research, wealthy individuals prioritize health in their potential partners, particularly those who follow a healthy lifestyle and avoid habits like smoking. They also value discretion highly and seek deep, meaningful emotional connections. Importantly, physical attractiveness is less of a priority than a potential partner's education level, with a preference for those holding a college degree or higher. Finally, the ultra-wealthy tend to lead global lifestyles, hence are open to long-distance relationships, and often seek partners with similar cosmopolitan tendencies.

How a Whisper Network for Online Dating Turned Divisive

Posted on July 21, 2023

Warning groupsWALL STREET JOURNAL – "Are We Dating the Same Guy" groups started appearing on Facebook a little over a year ago. They described themselves as safe spaces for women, meant for sounding the alarm on men "who might be liars, cheaters, abusers or toxic. The first group, founded in Mar 2022 in NYC, now has 113K members. Another, in Dallas-Fort Worth, has 120K. There are ~150 "Are We Dating the Same Guy" groups around the world. However, as these groups have grown, some members use them mainly for gossip, while others argue they have become sources of fear and controversy. Men are filing takedown requests with Meta, claiming misuse of their images and information. Some men have also created similar groups to discuss women they've dated. In 2005, Tasha Cunningham started an online forum called DontDateHimGirl.com. Members shared stories about men they’d met in bars, through friends and on early dating sites like Match.com and JDate. At its peak, DontDateHimGirl.com drew ~1M members, Cunningham said, but she decided to shutter it in 2010. There were legal threats from men, and she was trying to focus on a separate business venture.
