MSN – UK communications regulator Ofcom has mandated dating apps to implement strict age verification by July 2025 to prevent under-18s from accessing their platforms. This decision follows reports linking Grindr to over 130 child abuse cases since 2019, including four rapes in 2024. Under the Online Safety Act, dating apps are classified as "user-to-user" services and must adopt robust age checks, such as photo ID verification, facial age estimation, or banking data. Companies failing to comply face fines of up to £18M or 10% of global revenue.
