For The Best ROI, Try A Niche Dating Site

Posted on February 14, 2012

Online dating - couple with laptopsDAILY FINANCE – Feb 14 – Niche dating sites, a rapidly growing segment of the online matchmaking industry, are one way to go. Niche sites accounted for 23% of the online dating market in 2008, says Eric Resnick, director of strategy for Courtland Brooks, a marketing and consultancy firm to the online dating industry, and the owner of ProfileHelper.com, which helps people write online dating profiles. And they're up to 29% now, he says, quoting figures from Experian Hitwise. Dating experts say niche sites can better help daters zero in on what they are looking for. MarryMeAlready.com is geared toward folks in search of a permanent partner; OurTime.com (for people 50+); GreenSingles.com is for green-conscious people; Alikewise.com is for bookworms; and others. Then there sites such as Badoo or Twoo.com that are hybrid between an online dating site and a Facebookesque social network offers a free mobile app with new "interests" and "ice breaker" features.

Alikewise Review

Posted on November 3, 2010

Alikewise_logo EXAMINER – Nov 2 - Alikewise is a free dating site based on a user’s taste in books. The site is straightforward, requiring the right amount of information to get you started without endless questions and forms. The options for books to select are somewhat limited. The people are real. Anyone who bothered signing up for a site like this isn’t doing so to mess with people. There are no discernable limits on messages between members. The site is free and there aren’t even any ads on the site. Though Alikewise offers sanctuary to the bibliophiles of the world, it’s still too early to consider using it as a serious dating site since there aren’t enough users to gain a practical spread.

Alikewise.com Takes A Novel Approach To Love

Posted on October 11, 2010

Alikewise_logo ORLANDO SENTINEL – Oct 11 - Matt Sherman launched Alikewise.com, a dating site for book lovers, in late July, and it's now approaching 4,000 members. Finding a literary mate is just the latest addition to the ever-expanding world of niche matchmaking sites. Animal owners in search of love get datemypet.com, people with inky bodywork get tattooedsingles.com and the URL says it all at www.womenbehindbars.com.

Mark Brooks: Other interesting niche dating sites include FarmersOnly.com for those looking for a more rural lifestyle. Veggiedate.com for vegatarians. Alt.com for the whips and chains crowd.

You’re Reading That Book Too? Marry Me

Posted on September 20, 2010

Alikewise_logo WSJ – Sep 17 - alikewise.com is a free dating site that matches singles based on books and has amassed 4,000 users, mostly in their 20s and early 30s, since it launched in July. The site facilitates matchmaking by notifying users when someone adds a book of the same title or genre. Matt Masina and Matt Sherman hatched the idea for the site after Mr. Sherman broke up with his girlfriend. Mr. Masina asked him what he was looking for in a prospective date. His answer? "A girl who has read 'The Black Swan." "When you're dating, there is always that fateful moment when you see someone's bookshelf for the first time and either smile to yourself or run for the door. Our site is trying to mimic that experience online," Mr. Masina says. FULL ARTICLE @ WSJ

Q&A With The Founders Of Alikewise

Posted on August 6, 2010
Alikewise_logo NATIONAL POST – Aug 5 – Alikewise is a new dating site for those who are seeking to find a match based firstly on literary taste. Matt Masina and Matt Sherman are the site's founders.

Q: What inspired the idea of a matchmaking site based on similar literary taste?
Matt S: A few years ago, I had broken up with a girlfriend. When faced with the prospect of trying to meet someone new, I thought, “I’d love meet a woman who’s read The Black Swan”. Matt and I sort of ran with that idea. We realized that books are intimate and personal and revealing.

Q: Had either of you tried online dating before?
Matt M: I had been an avid online dater and there was always that moment of truth when I would be left alone for a few minutes with the person's book shelf. Stuff like “He’s Just Not That Into You”.  It gave you the sense that you weren’t the first to see this shelf.

Q: What books do you list on your profile?
Matt M: I Have The Holy Bible and a book called Ishmael by Daniel Quinn which is a wonderful blend of Theology and Philosophy.
Matt S: A recent favorite is Stuff White People Like, which is brilliant in a way that reminds me of Spinal Tap.

Q: What’s the response been?
Matt M: I think it is a little early to have any marriages as we have only really gone out to the public earlier this month, however at our launch event last night there were quite a few of our members who left together and I believer there were definitely some sparks starting to fly.
