Half of Young Danes Think Sugar Dating Is ‘Perfectly OK’ as Lawmakers Prepare Crackdown

Posted on March 18, 2021
SugardatersSPUTNIK NEWS – Mar 18 – In a cross-party effort, Danish lawmakers are calling for separate clauses that would punish grooming, sugar dating and other sex-related offenses targeting minors. 50% of the 1,732 Danish young people aged 18 to 30 surveyed said that sugar dating is perfectly okay, Danish Radio reported. While previous reports estimated that 1 to 2% of young people engage in sugar dating, VIVE's survey indicated that 5% of 18-30-year-olds actually tried giving sex, kissing, or sending intimate photos in exchange for everything from a drink to money. According to the dating site SugarDaters.dk, which has ~10K active users every month, it has nothing to do with prostitution. It stressed that it is a dating site like any other and doesn't encourage sex for money in any way.

Google Play Store Suspends Polyamory Dating App

Posted on March 16, 2021

Open iconVICE – Mar 16 – #open, an app for ethical non-monogamy, was suspended for violating the "Sexual Content and Profanity policy." Co-founders Amanda Wilson and David Epstein said that the company's product manager, Maile Maniliguis, submitted an update to the wording of their Google Play listing on March 4. They heard nothing from Google until two days later, when Google notified them that the app had been suspended and removed, citing violation of Google Play's "Sexual Content and Profanity policy." The notice specifically said that the app's title and full description were the parts in violation. The #open developers appealed the suspension, and are still waiting to hear back – but they say that this lost time is damaging.

Posted on February 22, 2021

Sugarbook iconMALAY MAIL – Feb 20 – Last week, Sugarbook's founder and CEO was arrested on suspicion of wrongfully confining persons for prostitution, soliciting for prostitution, making statements with an intent to cause fear or public alarm, and for improper use of network facilities or a network service. After the police announced investigations on women who are subscribed to the service, they said the exchanges between two consenting adults was not the authorities' business. Advance Tertiary College's academic director Daniel Abishegam said that Sugarbook was simple a "glorified" dating agency whose services did not expressly include trading sex for cash. Lawyer Fahri Azzat argued that Sugarbook was not fundamentally different from other dating services despite its premise of being "where romance meets finance".
