The Meet Group Launches Live Video on Growlr

Growlr logoBUSINESSWIRE – May 7 – The Meet Group, a leading provider of interactive dating solutions, is launching live video on its gay dating app GROWLr. Additionally, in the midst of the pandemic, one-on-one video chat is now free for all GROWLr members. "Livestreaming allows people to make connections and remain socially distant," said Geoff Cook, CEO of The Meet Group. Since the release of Live, 87% of surveyed GROWLr members said they feel they are able to connect with more people, and 90% have agreed that the feature provides them with a better way to meet and socialize with others during the pandemic. Beginning this week, GROWLr will host a variety of free live entertainment shows on its mobile app, welcoming musical artists, comedians, and more.

Grindr Is Now Available on Desktop

"It looks like a typical email interface so your business stays private, no matter who's looking over your shoulder," the website says. The interface style has an "office mode" option which makes all profile pictures invisible.

Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Online Daters Report Positive Experiences

Pewresearch logo 2020PEW RESEARCH – Apr 10 – Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults in the US are avid users of online dating sites and apps, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. LGB online daters generally report that their experiences with online dating have been positive. At the same time, they are more likely than their straight counterparts to experience a range of negative behaviors on dating platforms. More than half of LGB online daters (56%) say they have received a sexually explicit message or image they did not ask for, compared with 32% of straight online daters who say the same. 41% say someone has called them an offensive name on one of these sites or apps. About two-thirds (65%) of LGB online daters say their experience was very or somewhat positive. By contrast, 56% of straight online daters say their personal experiences were positive overall.

Taimi Hits 5 Million Users Worldwide

Grindr Is the Dating App That Drains the Most Battery From a Mobile

Grindr profilesGAY TIMES – Mar 30 – Uswitch has analysed the 50 most popular apps on major app stores and looked at how many battery-draining permissions an app used, and when it came to dating apps Grindr came out on top. Grindr had 28 battery-draining permissions, it was followed by Bumble which has 20, Tinder which has 18 and Hinge which has 13. Google has 72 battery-draining permissions, Facebook 50 and Facebook Messenger 46.

LGBT+ People Warned off Casual Sex

Gay dating apps1REUTERS – Mar 28 – According to Sensor Tower, Grindr downloads fell 19% in Spain and 8% in Italy. Gay app Scruff saw a drop of 7% and 10% week-on-week for Spain and Italy. But although the dating apps were down in terms of new users, operators reported higher usage by those on the site. Lesbian app HER had seen "a pretty heavy spike in usage". Over the weekend of March 14-15, HER reported its highest day of the year for "likes" on posts, with the overall number of likes rising by 16% over the weekend.

Grindr Sale Finalized for ~$608.5 Million

Grindr icon 2020QUEERTY – Mar 28 – The move came just four years after Kunlun bought the app from its original creator, Joel Simkhai. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S, a government watchdog group, ordered Kunlun to sell off a majority stake in the company last year. One of the new investors is James Lu, a Chinese tech mogul. A company called San Vicente Acquisition Partners was set up to make the purchase and allow the buyers to stay anonymous.
