U.S. Pushes Chinese Owner of Grindr to Divest the Dating App

Posted on March 27, 2019

Grindr icon black yellowREUTERS – Mar 26 – Chinese gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech Co Ltd is seeking to sell Grindr, the gay dating app it has owned since 2016, after a U.S. government national security panel raised concerns about its ownership. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has informed Kunlun that its ownership of Grindr constitutes a national security risk. Kunlun had said last August it was preparing for an IPO of Grindr. As a result of CFIUS' intervention, Kunlun has now shifted its focus to an auction process to sell Grindr outright. Grindr has hired investment bank Cowen Inc to handle the sale process, and is soliciting acquisition interest from U.S. investment firms, as well as Grindr's competitors. Kunlun acquired a majority stake in Grindr in 2016 for $93M. It bought out the remainder of the company in 2018.

A Chinese Dating App for Gay Men Is Helping Them Have Kids, Too

Posted on March 21, 2019

Bluedbaby picBLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK – Mar 21 – The urge to have a child hit Blued's founder Geng Le hard after age 35. Surrogacy is illegal in China. Another option was Thailand, but by 2015 that country had banned foreign surrogacy. Geng decided on California, which offered the best legal protections for "intended parents" such as himself, excellent advanced medical care for the surrogate and the newborn, and a U.S. passport for the baby. The surrogacy process was a long drumbeat of tests, contract signings, and administrative details. When the due date came around, Geng flew to LA for the birth and held his son for the first time. He returned home with his son, Xiao Shu, in March 2017. He also brought back a new idea for Blued: an overseas surrogacy service for gay men – Bluedbaby. Bluedbaby shepherds clients through such choices, connecting them with steps such as choosing an egg donor, finding a surrogate, signing contracts, and navigating American culture.

GLOBAL NEWS – Mar 17 – Grindr was launched in March of 2009 and now has millions of daily users. The app's rise in popularity is no big surprise, as it turns out online dating in general has become the most popular way to meet people, especially within the LGBTQ community. New research from Stanford University and the University of New Mexico says ~70% of American same-sex couples who met recently did so online.

Scruff Is Launching a Live Trivia Quiz Show

Posted on March 13, 2019

Scruff quizTHE VERGE – Mar 13 – Scruff, a gay dating app, is launching a new live quiz show, called Hosting, that'll live inside the app. There will be a $500 prize for each game, and participants can browse who else is playing and either "woof" at them, which is like a Facebook Poke, or "favorite" them, which adds them to a list of people they might want to revisit. Every show takes place at 9PM ET, and is available in North America. There are three rounds with 10 questions each. Players have 10 seconds to answer each question. Scruff has committed to being an ad-free platform, so it says there won't be ads during the quiz show.

Christians Demand Walmart Take Down Gay Dating Ad

Posted on March 10, 2019

WalmartCHRISTIAN POST – Mar 9 – 137K people have signed a petition urging Walmart to take down its gay dating ad. Last month, Walmart launched a Valentine's Day themed ad campaign called "Love Is in the Aisle: A Dating Show at Walmart," which had three episodes, one of which included a same-sex couple. In a petition started last week, the socially conservative American Family Association denounced the ad and called on Walmart to "remain neutral in culture war" and "remove pro-homosexual promotional video."

Believr Dating App Is for Gay Christians

Posted on March 6, 2019

Believr logoCOLORADO SPRINGS INDEPENDENT – Mar 6 – A new LGBTQ Christian dating app named "believr" will be launching this year. But how does one identify as queer and Christian? "This mentality that the two identities cannot cohabitate in one person presents unique struggles for someone identifying as both, including myself and my friend," said Adam Evers, believr's founder and CEO. "I often find I'm too gay for the Christians and too Christian for LGBTQ+ circles," Adam shares. The platform is planning on going old-school, with chat rooms like the legendary AOL, as well as value-based matching where you can find a partner who has a similar outlook on life.

Interview With the CEO of Rumpur, an Ethnic Gay Dating Service

Posted on February 18, 2019

Rumpur iconOPW INTERVIEW – Feb 18 – Rumpur is billed as the first dating app for ethic gay men, a relationship focused service 'without the restraints of discrimination based on race.' Here's what the CEO/Founder Garfield Wright had to say about the app. – Mark Brooks

Why Rumpur?
At Rumpur we recognize that ethnic gay men are faced with racism, discrimination and bigotry on many dating apps and websites. These men are left feeling rejected and debased as human beings. Rumpur was created to level the online dating field for ethnic gay men.

What's your USP
Rumpur is the first American based gay dating app to offer live video chat where users can authenticate each other and talk in real time.

How many daily active users do you have at this stage?
As of this writing, we have a total of 11,904 users. 7953 of such are active users and 5,340 are daily active users.

What funding have you had to date?
To date we haven't sought any funding because we wanted to gain traction before we approach any investors. Now we are gaining traction and growing our user base. We believe now is the right time to seek funding.

What are you plans for the app?
Our plan for the app is to make it the number one app for ethnic gay people in the LGBTQ community throughout the world. Although we started out targeting ethnic gay men we will eventually open up our app to accommodate the entire LGBTQ community such as lesbians, non binaries, etc.

Whats next?
We are gaining traction every day with new users entering our platform. However, we lack the necessary funding to drive growth. We are seeking a seed round in financing to take Rumpur to the next level. The funding will be used to hire a product manager, hire a marketing expert, increase our advertising budget and optimize our app store presence.

What kind of money are you looking for ideally?
We are seeking a seed round of $400,000 to $500,000 for 10% of our company. We understand our target audience and our market and are a very resilient team that can weather the ups and downs of running a startup.
