Asian Man Is Bringing A Class Action Against Grindr For Allowing Racial Discrimination
THEGAYUK – July 10 – A man is planning to sue the gay dating app, Grindr, for racial discrimination and is looking for co-plaintiffs across the US's fifty states so that he can bring a class action. Sinakhone Keodara, the CEO and founder of the Asian Entertainment Television company says that Grindr allows "white gay men to write in their profiles 'no Asians', 'not interested in Asians' or 'I don't find Asians attractive'," which he says, leads to people feeling "offended, humiliated, degraded and dehumanised" by the app.
One Third Of Gay People ‘Swipe Left’ On HIV-positive Users
PINK NEWS – July 7 – Three in 10 lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people 'swipe left' to reject people who are HIV-positive but on effective treatment, according to the latest research carried out by YouGov for sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust. 51% of LGB respondents do not believe that people living with HIV on effective medication can't pass it on. Today, HIV can be effectively treated to reduce the viral load in the blood to undetectable levels, meaning that it cannot be passed on. Just one in five of respondents said they would feel comfortable having unprotected sex with an HIV-positive person on effective treatment.
Gay Dating App Thrives In China
CBC.CA – July 5 – Based in Beijing, Blued is the most popular gay dating app in the world. Blued operates mostly in China and Southeast Asia, but has plans to expand to Mexico and Brazil and eventually to North America and Europe. It's also moving beyond dating to offer adoption services to gay couples and free HIV testing clinics in China. Beijing's approach to homosexuality has been ambiguous and sometimes contradictory. "The government has its 'Three No's,'" said Xiaogang Wei, the executive director of the LGBT group Beijing Gender. "Don't support homosexuality, don't oppose and don't promote." In 2016, Beijing banned depictions of gay people on TV and the internet in a sweeping crackdown on "vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content." Regulations said any reference to homosexuality promotes the "dark side of society," lumping gay content in with sexual violence and incest. Yet in April, when Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo decided to impose its own, apparently unofficial ban on gay content – erasing 50k posts in one day – Beijing seemed to mirror the disapproval of internet users.
Why Chappy Thinks Its The Best Gay Dating App
FORBES – June 30 – Founded in 2017, Chappy aims to be a judgment-free space. It takes away the focus on height, weight and ethnicity, which have become the primary drivers for getting a match. Sam Dumas, Chappy's head of brand, discuses how the app stands alone, the goals it is trying to achieve and how online dating can go far beyond a one-time hook-up.
Q: How would you describe Chappy?
A: We're a dating app at our core, but represent so much more. We provide an inclusive, kind and respectful network for gay men to form meaningful connections.
Q: Who would you say is your biggest competition in the gay dating space?
A: I truly believe that we stand alone.
Q: What is the purpose of "The Chappy Pledge," and how are you regulating the actions of users?
A: It is our commitment to changing the way people treat each other online.
Q: How would you describe the stigma associated with gay dating apps, and why do you think it is so pervasive?
A: The market is oversaturated with one-sided hookup driven apps. At Chappy we are breaking down the perception that gay men are only looking for one thing. We are certainly fighting against the stigma by recognizing that gay men are looking for more meaningful connections, whatever that may be for the individual.
Q: Where do you see Chappy in the next five years, and how are you looking to get there?
A: This is just the beginning for Chappy. Our main focus right now is on the U.S. market, but we have plans to expand internationally in the near future.

How HER Became The Queer Woman’s Answer To Grindr
BRIT.CO – June 25 – Robyn Exton, founder and CEO of the dating app HER, names the year 2012 as a turning point in her professional life. Back then, Exton worked at a marketing agency, where she spent the year assigned to a client in the online dating business. She couldn't help but notice some serious holes in the industry: where was the dating service for women, trans, and gender non-conforming folks? Exton quit her job, moved home with her father, and started to learn how to code. In less than a year, she released her first dating app, Dattch (now HER) – a blend of "date" and "catch" – dedicated solely to lesbian, bisexual, and queer folks. The first version of Dattch came out in September 2013, but Exton reveals that it just didn't work the way she had hoped. She went back to the drawing board and started over. Exton and her team spent six months testing their product with users to understand what they really wanted in an app. With 3M users to date, HER is flourishing.
