Q&A With Chappy Founder Ollie Locke

Posted on September 18, 2017

Chappy logoOUT.COM – Sep 17 – Chappy is one of the latest dating apps to hit the gay scene. It allows users to filter out "Mr. Right" from "Mr. Right Now."

Q: How did you guys come up with the idea for Chappy?
A: I asked why is every platform only about hookups? Why is it not about dating? And we came together and made Chappy.

Q: How do you see Chappy fitting into this new era of online dating?
A: I think all of us generally want safer, more responsible choices about what we want in relationships, hookups, spontaneous weekends, whatever we're looking for.

Q: What else is in store for the app?
A: Chappy is different because we're trying to make it a lifestyle app as well. We want you to be on the app once you've found someone.

A Computer Can Tell If Someone Is Gay

Posted on September 11, 2017

Gay-faceNEWNOWNEXT – Sep 9 – Stanford University researchers Yilun Wang and Michal Kosinski developed artificial intelligence software that used deep neural networks to extract features from 35k faces, and then classified them by sexual orientation. The program correctly distinguished between gay and straight men in 81% of cases, and between lesbians and straight women 71% of the time. Human judges, meanwhile, only got it right 61% of the time for men and 54% for women. "Gay men and women tended to have gender-atypical facial morphology, expression, and grooming styles," according to a paper Wang and Kosinski are publishing in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Grindr Is Trying To Become A Publisher To Attract Advertisers

Posted on August 17, 2017

Grindr Into logoDIGIDAY – Aug 16 – This week, gay hookup app Grindr launched a digital magazine called Into, which had been in pilot mode since March. Grindr hopes its new publishing arm can win over big brands that are otherwise pretty nervous about their ads appearing next to sexual content. Grindr hired seven full-time editorial people to create content for Into. Former Out magazine editor Zach Stafford is the new website's editor-in-chief. The content aims to attract millennials, the elusive demographic that advertisers are most thirsty to reach. Among Grindr's users in the U.S., 64% are under 34.

Jack’d App Improves Location Security

Posted on August 3, 2017

Jackd logo oct 16ABOUT NEWS – Aug 1 – In response to rising LGBT hate crimes since the 2016 US Election (25% increase), the gay dating app Jack'd has heightened security with new features including one that blurs the GPS of its members. Before the launch of the blurring feature, Jack'd had disabled location sharing in countries where homosexuality was illegal. The blurring now allows these men to safely use GPS technology to find nearby men. It adds a rounding error to the member's coordinates so that other men are given a general idea of their whereabouts without pinpointing their exact location. Even Jack'd's servers do not know the exact location of members.

A Young Matchmaker Is Setting Up Arranged Marriages For Gay Couples In India

Posted on August 3, 2017

Iagm screenshotNEWNOWNEXT – Aug 2 – Urvi Shah, a young entrepreneur in India, is playing matchmaker, arranging marriages between gay singles in a country where homosexuality is still technically illegal. She launched the International Marriage Bureau for Gays and Lesbians (IAGM) in 2015. Since then, IAGM has helped 21 couples in India, and ~100 couples internationally, form long-term partnerships and marriages. Homosexuality was decriminalized in India in 2009 but, just four years later, the country's Supreme Court reinstated Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, making same-sex relations illegal once more. Despite the fact that 95% of the population believes it the law should be repealed, marriage equality is still a distant dream for LGBT Indians. As a workaround, some of the couples who used Shah's service have gone abroad the knot. Others have had symbolic ceremonies, and some just remain personally committed to their relationships.
