Hooking Up With The Father Of Manhunt

Posted on June 19, 2009
Jonathan crutchley1 GAY&LESBIAN TIMES — June 18 — What began in 1989 as a telephone dating service called The Tool Line, is today the leading Web site for men looking to meet other men. The Gay & Lesbian Times sat down with Jonathan Crutchley, the co-founder of Manhunt  to discuss how he and his business partner Larry Basile first came up with the idea for an online gay dating site.

Q: How did you meet men in the ’70s?
A: It wasn’t until the introduction of telephone chat lines, like the ones founded by Larry Basile in 1987.

Q: Are people surprised to meet the man behind the Manhunt curtain?
A: Yes, the real me is not what people imagine. You wouldn’t find me marching in a Pride parade with my shirt off, but I’d be watching the parade from the sidelines.

Q: What is the secret to Manhunt’s success?
A: We developed a site that was easy for the average guy to use and we emphasized our 24-hour-a-day customer service to help guys use the site and be comfortable with it and with themselves.
Q: How has gay dating changed since the site began 10 years ago? What are men looking for now?
A: Guys have always been looking for the same things. The Internet makes it much easier to find exactly what you want.

Q: What is Manhunt doing to remain on top?
A: Our biggest bet for continued growth is international expansion. We are growing very rapidly in Brazil and all of Latin America, and we have expansion plans in Asia.
Q: How does Manhunt feel about eHarmony and Match.com targeting the gay community?
A: Straight dating sites just don’t get it as far as was what gay men are looking for.
Q: How safe is Manhunt?
A: Meeting a stranger on Manhunt can be just as dangerous as meeting a stranger on Craigslist or in a bar or in a dark alley. We tell guys to be careful and meet first in a public place, but men will do what they want. The Internet can be dangerous.
Q: Is it Manhunt’s responsibility to protect its members from online predators?
A: We urge Manhunt members to take responsible precautions about meeting any stranger, but it is difficult if not impossible to prevent bad things from happening.
Q: Manhunt will be introducing its new version later this year. How will the new Manhunt be different than classic Manhunt?
A: The new version accommodates many more users, but it will look different and take getting used to.

Q: Is mobile the next big wave for meeting men?
A: Yes, the future is mobile. Manhunt has a mobile application and we’re updating it.

Homosexual Harmony Or Violation Of Scripture?

Posted on April 14, 2009

Compatiblepartners logo CHICAGO TRIBUNE — Apr 14 — As part of the settlement reached in Nov, eHarmony agreed to offer CompatiblePartners.net, market it in gay media and reel in the first 10,000 singles by registering them for free. But some Christians who rank religion fairly high say the company’s actions violate Scripture that label homosexuality a sin. They also feel betrayed. “You have now officially joined the list of Companies Promoting Immorality (CPI)–a growing list, indeed,” wrote Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth, a conservative Christian advocacy group, in a letter to Neil Clark Warren, who has retired but is still on eHarmony’s board. FULL ARTICLE @ CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Mark Brooks: Match, Plentyoffish, Yahoo Personals, and numerous other dating entities are also in the same violation then, I guess. Equal rights vs Scripture. I vote for equal rights, and freedom, every time. Sorry scripture. Your moral compass is off on this one, so says modern society. I believe in sexual freedom, and openness. Your comments please.

eHarmony Launches Gay Matchmaking Service

Posted on March 31, 2009

Compatiblepartners logo LA TIMES — Mar 30 — eHarmony agreed in November to start the dating service as part of a settlement with the New Jersey attorney general in the wake of a discrimination suit. Dating site consultant Mark Brooks says Compatible Partners will be watched closely. "This will be one of the most scrutinized products in Internet dating," said Brooks. "They will have to introduce an A1 product." It's not a comfortable fit for eHarmony's founder, Neil Clark Warren. "I never had a gay couple." Brooks thinks Compatible Partners could be a winner. "Niche products are proving to be very effective," he said. "People are more likely to connect with a brand that serves it, specifically." FULL ARTICLE @ LA TIMES

eHarmony’s Same-Sex Dating Site Launches

Posted on March 31, 2009

Compatiblepartners picture WSJ — Mar 31 – In response to discrimination litigation, eHarmony will launch the gay version of its heterosexual match-making service on Tuesday. The site, Compatible Partners, was developed as part of a settlement last fall with the New Jersey attorney general. Patrick Perrine, founder and CEO of myPartner.com, an online dating site for gay men, remains skeptical about eHarmony’s new venture. He says the compatibility system on his site, matching men with other men, wouldn’t work for lesbian women. “They’re very different populations that have very different needs,” he said. Gay Dating Makes Its Way To The iPhone

Posted on March 26, 2009

Grindrshot
TECH CRUNCH — Mar 25 — Grindr is one of the first iPhone applications
geared towards gay and bisexual men. Without proper security
measures, bigots could easily download such applications and use them
to pinpoint targets for hateful slurs and potentially even violence.
Grindr deals with these issues by obscuring a user’s absolute location
by default. Rather than plotting each user on the map. Grindr displays
how far away they are. FULL ARTICLE @ TECH CRUNCH
