Why Investors Don’t Fund Dating

Posted on May 31, 2015

Internet_datingANDREWCHEN – May 28 - It’s hard to get a dating product funded by mainstream Silicon Valley investors. They refuse to invest in the dating category in the same way that many refuse to invest in games, hardware, gambling, etc. Here are the reasons usually given for why investors don’t do dating:

Built-in churn
The better your dating product works, the more your customers will churn. The churn rate for dating site is usually 20-30% monthly = 93% annual churn. You have to have a strategy to replace almost your entire customer base each year.

Dating has a shelf-life
Being "in the market" as a single person looking to meet others has a limited time window.

Paid acquisition channels are expensive
This is an area where the new mobile dating apps excel. They have the ability to tap into organic viral/word-of-mouth installs.

City-by-city expansion sucks
Dating products inherently rely on a local marketplace, and bootstrapping a series of marketplaces is very hard, and expensive.

Hard to exit
The lack of exits might be more the result, not the cause, of investor disinterest in dating.

HeyLets Startup App Wants To Cure Boredom

Posted on May 21, 2015

Heylets logoBUSINESS INSIDER – May 20 – After establishing online furniture site Zanui in Australia, founder Dean Kelly went to San Fran and met his future business partner, Justin Parfitt, who at the time was working on high-end speed dating events called Fast Impressions which he later sold to POF. They launched HeyLets after they wondered why they were reading negative reviews about experiences from people they had nothing in common with. The founders recently closed $1.65M in seed funding from Blue Sky Ventures and a handful of angel investors. The app startup is aiming to raise its series A round in the next three to six months. There have been ~100K downloads to date and an Android version is on the way. Built for mobile, users upload a photo and 200 characters about an experience they enjoyed, rather than a review of a place so it focuses on recommendations.

Why Founders Of Dating Ring Walked Away From $50,000

Posted on May 15, 2015

The dating ring foundersBUSINESS INSIDER – May 14 – Emma Tessler and Lauren Kay pitched their startup, The Dating Ring, to a crowded room full of venture capitalists at Y Combinator's Demo Day in 2014. Tessler, the company's co-founder and COO, approached an investor who put his arm around her. His one-handed hug had landed his hand on the side of her breast – right as he offered $50K to invest in Dating Ring. She turned down the money. After Demo Day, Kay took on the majority of fundraising work as CEO and started lining up calls with investors. The company raised $455K in March and May 2014, and haven't raised any money since. "I had 40 fundraising meetings, I sent ~300 emails requesting meetings, and tried to get in touch with another 500 investors," Kay wrote in her blog post called "Fundraising While Female". While she didn't want to blame any of it on her gender but she knew it had played a role.
