Grindr ‘Disappointed’ by Pakistan Block
WHTC – Sep 3 – Grindr is disappointed by Pakistan's decision this week to block it and four other dating apps including Tinder after they were deemed to be disseminating "immoral content". Pakistan, the second largest Muslim-majority country in the world after Indonesia, is an Islamic nation where extra-marital relationships and homosexuality are illegal. Grindr did not say whether it would seek to discuss the matter further with Pakistani authorities.
Pakistan Bans 5 Dating Apps for ‘Immoral’ Content
TELEGRAPH INDIA – Sep 2 – Pakistan's telecom watchdog blocked Tinder, Tagged, Skout, Grindr and SayHi after they failed to take down the improper material. The apps were asked to remove "dating services" and moderate live streaming content "in accordance with the local laws of Pakistan" but they ignored the warning.
TrulyMadly Raises Rs 8.1 Crore
ECONOMIC TIMES – Aug 31 – Indian dating app TrulyMadly has raised $1.1M (Rs. 8.1 crore) from several angel investors and a venture capital firm. The company reported a revenue of Rs. 3.60 crore ($493.4k) in the financial year 2018, Rs. 3.48 crore ($476.9k) in 2019 and Rs. 3.45 crore ($472.8k) in 2020. However, this fiscal year, the company expects to reach Rs. 9 crore ($1.2M) in revenue.

As You Are – A Homegrown LGBTQ Dating App in India
INDIAN EXPRESS – Aug 25 – Indian LGBTQ dating app called "As You Are" aims to offer a safe space for people to make connections while keeping their identity confidential. The app was created by two women – Sunali Aggarwal and Aditi Gupta. For close to two decades, the duo has closely worked with various startups. The app has a strong verification process to filter out fake or junk profiles early on. New users have to provide their email and phone number and a selfie for verification. The app is about two months old and is seeing ~60 signups on a daily basis.
Bumble Launches Ooh Campaign Featuring Local Influencers in Australia
B&T MAGAZINE – Aug 13 – Bumble has revealed its latest out of home campaign across Sydney's CBD. The campaign examines the concept of "dating in 2020", and includes the Bumble Date profiles of local influencers Brittany Hockley, Josh Heuston, Jamie Zhu and Cynthia Taylu. In Australia during peak lockdown, Bumble saw a 76% increase of in-app video calls and since the 'Virtual Dating' badge was released in April this year, ~1M users around the world have added it to their profile.
Dating Apps Gaining Ground in Socially Conservative Pakistan
SEEKING ALPHA – Aug 11 – Dating apps like Tinder look to gain some ground amid changing attitudes around casual dating in socially conservative regions like Pakistan. Dating for women is still frowned upon in the heavily patriarchal society, but attitudes are changing in the cities, where single women are increasingly using the apps to connect with partners. Most Tinder users in the country are 18-40 and come from major cities including Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Bumble is also gaining ground, as is Muzmatch.

Mumbai Is Hotbed of Sugar Dating, Delhi Close Second
THE PRINT – Aug 10 – With a surge in unemployment rates and the fear of an uncertain future brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, many young Indians are turning to sugar dating. According to SeekingArrangement, Mumbai is the hotbed for sugar dating in India, with 6,246 sugar babies and 21,464 sugar daddies, followed by New Delhi with 3,447 sugar babies and 13,127 sugar daddies. Hyderabad trails closely behind with 1,218 sugar babies and 11,784 sugar daddies. SeekingArrangement launched in 2006, but the India operations are currently run out of Malaysia.
Matrimony Reports Strong Net Profit Growth of 38%
EQUITY BULLS – Aug 5 – Matrimony.com Limited, the leading online matrimony company, announced its Q1 2020 financial results. Q1 revenue totalled Rs 86.8 crores ($11.6M), down 9% YOY. Net profit grew 38% YOY to Rs 9.4 crores ($1.3M). Murugavel Janakiraman, Chairman and Managing Director said, "We were able to minimize the impact caused by COVID-19 in the quarter and we have returned to a growth trajectory in June.

THE TIMES OF INDIA – Aug 5 – Gleeden, an extramarital dating app, has found out that ~75% of its users are willing to meet their love interests if provided an opportunity. ~45.6% of users think that their shared intimacy won't affect their current relationship while 47% of them believe that they cannot share the same level of emotions with two different people. 37% of people commit infidelity because they want to try out something new or spice up their existing relationship. 36% of people commit infidelity because they are in love with someone else.
