Q&A With Dmitry Volkov About His Art Installation At Burning Man

Posted on September 13, 2017

Dmitry volkovHUFFINGTON POST – Sep 11 – Burning Man attracts a wide range of people who are enthusiastic about experiencing one of the most moving, spiritual and unforgettable experiences of their lives. One of these people is Dmitry Volkov, an owner of Social Discovery Ventures (AnastasiaDate.com & AsianDate.com), investor and organizer of the OraculeTang camp at this year's Burning Man festival. The OraculeTang camp has been featured by Business Insider as one of the most incredible art installations at this year's Burning Man festival. Four large, inflatable figures of green aliens, ranging from 4.5m to 12m tall, represented the sacral objects for all the aliens and the Burners who believe in the existence of extraterrestrial life, and who worship alien civilizations.

Q: Who are you and what do you do for a living?
A: I'm an entrepreneur, investor, philosopher and contemporary art collector.

Q: What brought you to Burning Man?
A: I had heard about Burning Man many times. I became certain that I wanted to go when visiting my friend and philosopher, D. Dennett. One of Dennett's friends shared the story of Burning Man with me as well as his experiences out on The Playa.

Q: What inspired you to build the OraculeTang camp and what does it represent?
A: In 2015 we brought a gigantic robotic orangutang – OraculeTang. He was both an animal and a robot. The idea was to build a non-organic, intelligent animal that could communicate with humans. This year's Burning Man theme was all about radical inclusion – where people with different and alternative lifestyles come together and embrace each other's differences.

Q: You had recently met Dalai Lama. How was this experience and has it given you any new visions?
A: This relates to one of my philosophy projects. For many years, I have tried to contribute to developing bridges between philosophers in Russia and Western analytic philosophers. The Greenland conference I organized in 2014 is an example of this. The project I am doing with Dalai Lama is an attempt to stretch our hand to the East. Buddhists have developed a lot of very valuable ideas in ethics, as well as metaphysical ideas, like the concept of self as fiction. I think this is both interesting and worth exploring further.

Top iOS Dating Apps Are Exposing Users Personal Life To Hackers

Posted on February 6, 2017

Dating apps2WIRED.CO.UK – Feb 3 – The more personal data a company has on its customers, the bigger the risk if it is hacked. A Wired investigation has found some of the dating apps are leaking Facebook details, sharing birthdates and taking precise location details. These were Happn, Hookup Now, AnastasiaDate, and AffairD. The analysis also highlighted the amount of personal data being collected by MeetMe and specific location data being gathered by Once. Happn is supposed to only reveal a person's first name, but it also leaks a person's Facebook ID. Happn acknowledged there was a flaw and said: "We are working on a solution where Happn would act as a proxy, preventing users from being able to identify other users' Facebook IDs in the future." Once was shown to be gathering highly specific location data. The company said it would evaluate whether it needed to collect close location data and remove this feature if it wasn't required. AnastasiaDate allows for a person's date of birth to be visible, despite not being displayed on their profile. During analysis, MeetMe sent data to one advertiser "110 times during a five-minute period while clicking different buttons in the app". Much of this data was sent when an in-app button was pressed. MeetMe said it provides anonymous advertising IDs to firms, which are widely used across the industry, and that it doesn't share personally identifiable info with advertisers.

Chasing Young Women In Odessa

Posted on April 7, 2014

Bridal-shop-in-KievTHE GUARDIAN – Apr 7 – Ukraine's internet romance industry is booming, despite the unrest. Odessa is the biggest hub. There are legions of western men in town meeting with young women they have met online. Anastasia International is one of the companies organizing romance tours to Odessa. Men pay for every minute they chat online to a woman and ~$5K for a week in Odessa hoping to find a wife. Many of the men on the tour are patently unrealistic. The majority of them fall victim to a number of sophisticated scams. Anastasia International, while not directly colluding in the scams, runs a highly profitable business model (annual projected revenue of $140M) that allows them to flourish. The company insists that it weeds out scams whenever it finds them, and has banned some women from the site. It also says it will reimburse clients who fall victims to scams, and provides advice on how to avoid them.

Trademark Violations Court Fight

Posted on May 4, 2013

Court hammerCOURTHOUSE NEWS – May 3 - Anastasia accuses Elena's Models of trademark violations, false advertising, tortious interference and unfair competition, in Manhattan Federal Court. "Upon information and belief, Elena's Models operates or sponsors websites entitled 'anastasiadatefraud.com' and 'ruadventures.com.' Both of these websites disguise the identity of their owners by using a proxy service. However, they direct customers to the elenasmodels.com website. These websites accuse Anastasiadate of systematically perpetuating scams and fraudulent deceptions upon its customers, and then recommend that the customers use Elena's Models."

Broaden Your Scope

Posted on April 27, 2013

Anastasiadate logo nov 12MENSHEALTH – Apr 25 – International online dating, has been gaining popularity in the past 5 years, according to AnastasiaDate, which has seen a 57% member increase during that time. While the average online dater likes to travel less than 20 miles, the international dater typically treks 2,000, says Mark Brooks, AnastasiaDate’s Chief Strategy Officer. And that opens the door to new women, new experiences, and a new mindset. But while traveling the world and meeting gorgeous girls sounds like paradise, it’s not quite a reality, unless you have tons of cash, and a super-flexible job. A 2011 study found that, on average, New Yorkers stay within a 4-mile radius every day, while people in Los Angeles are tied to a 5.5-mile range. "Even if you stick to your city, you’ll meet new people in different neighborhoods with different routines than you", says Michael Cunningham, PhD, a professor at the University of Lousiville.
