The Profile Of Romances Born Online

Posted on December 20, 2012

Pof.com logo use january 2012YOUR TANGO – Dec 20 - The top two ways that people meet are through friends or via cyberspace. More and more couples are getting help from POF.com, just like Alex and Aggie of CaughtMyFish.com. Markus Frind, founder of POF.com, describes what makes online chemistry connections distinct.

Q: Do you agree that online dating makes people unrealistic and picky?
A: Having so many options to choose from can cause a disconnect between you and people you might be interested in dating in real life.

Q: Has fate and society propelled people to rely on technology to find their other half?
A: The fate factor is always up for debate, and I wouldn't say that people have to reply on technology to meet someone special, but POF definitely expands people's dating horizons.

Q: Is online dating best suited for certain types of people?
A: Online dating can work for anyone who is ready to meet someone and is willing to open themselves up to new experiences.

eHarmony Founder Has His Heart Set On Reviving The Dating Site

Posted on December 14, 2012

Eharmony neil clark warren la times interviewLOS ANGELES TIMES – Dec 13 – Neil Clark Warren came out of retirement to take over as CEO. In the last three years, he said, new memberships, retention rates and time spent on the site were all down. eHarmony growth has slowed: Its 2012 revenue is estimated at $275M, up 3.8% from last year. That's down from 2008, when eHarmony saw 16.4% YOY growth. Now, just 15% of eHarmony's staff has been with the company at least five years. Warren wants to make eHarmony a broad "relationship site" that includes services to help users make new friends, find the right job, become better parents, cope with aging and solve interpersonal problems, among others. How eHarmony manages that wealth of member information — users fill out an extensive questionnaire when they join the site, answering questions about their daily habits, likes and dislikes, past experiences and goals — will be the key to whether the new ventures are successful, said Mark Brooks, an online dating industry consultant. "I've seen a few Internet dating companies moving into other areas and failing," Brooks said. "But in the case of eHarmony it makes a lot of sense because they have deeper information on their users than any other company I can think of." Still, Brooks said he doesn't want eHarmony to lose focus on its core business, which "no question should have been a half-a-billion-a-year-revenue company by now."

eHarmony declined to release financial details but said new memberships increased 20% in the last month from the month before. It also said a member's average total amount spent on the site is up 15% year over year.

Dating Sites For All Ages. AARP Launches Dating Service

Posted on December 3, 2012

Senior dateUSA TODAY – Dec 3 – The latest trend in online dating? Going offline as fast as you can. AARP is launching an idating service in partnership with HowAboutWe. 25% of AARP's 37M members are single and over half of the singles are under 70. Online dating industry consultant Mark Brooks says the AARP move into dating seems smart. "Seniors is a very good niche. Most dating sites skew toward guys, with more guys than women. But senior dating sites have more women. Being a 75 year old single man is the equivalent of being a 21year old hottie."

Older sites such as Match.com and newer ones such as DinnerDate, CupidRadar and Grouper, all are focusing on the importance of a personal connection offline. "I cringe a little when people describe it as online dating," said Michael Waxman, co-founder and CEO of Grouper. The typical experience for a Grouper member is to spend ~5 minutes on our website and ~2 hours at a bar with your friends." By the end of this year, Match.com say the site will have hosted ~ 2K events with 150K singles. PlentyofFish, a free online site, also hosts facetoface events.

Markus Frind Puts Focus On POF’s Growth

Posted on November 22, 2012

Pof markus frind nov 12 bSPROUTER – Nov 22 – Plenty of Fish, abbreviated as POF, was started by Frind at his home in Vancouver in 2003. “When I reached 15M users and peaked at two billion page views, I knew I needed customer service to effectively support POF’s exploding user base. In 2008 we moved into our first office, and we recently added a third to support our growth.” “The site recently reached ~3M active daily users, and POF members have now hosted ~20K singles events. Frind believes they key to success is simple. “Keep costs as low as possible, and follow a lean startup model.” Not raising outside funding hasn’t hampered POF’s success, as the company was featured on BusinessInsider’s Digital 100, which lists the world’s most valuable technology companies. Frind believes you should always “focus on something that plays to your strengths, and understand growth – growth drives everything in this world.“

Interview With Markus Frind, Founder Of POF.com

Posted on November 12, 2012

Pof markus frind nov 12EXAMINER – Oct 11 - Markus Frind, Founder of POF.com, shared his insight on how people who log on to POF can take an effective approach to find their soulmate.

Q: How does POF.com select the match and who will respond profiles for a user?
A: POF matches users based on what they say they want in a partner – but also factors in certain user activity on the site.

Q: Is the digital cupid aspect of POF.com similar to what the odds are in a bar or other social event?
A: While it’s not difficult to meet new people at a bar, it is difficult to meet the right person. We allow for an experience that promotes interaction on a deeper level. Sometimes you don’t even know if the guy you’re eyeing is single.

Q: How does POF.com reflect your vision for what you wanted the site to be?
A: POF was created to fill a vacancy in the online dating industry as a free site. POF continues adapting as a business to facilitate the evolving world of dating. Our mobile apps for Android and iPhone are growing at a rate of several percent each week, and 70% of POF users last accessed the site via mobile device.

Q: How is it that a perfect match can be found online sometimes instead of offline?
A: Online dating exposes you to people that you otherwise would never meet offline.

Glamour Magazine: 1 In 10 Profiles Are Scams

Posted on October 31, 2012

Hacker-with-computer-and-credit-cardVENTURE BEAT – Oct 30 – A special report published in this month's issue of Glamour Magazine highlights the dangers of scammers in online dating. “On most dating sites, one out of 10 profiles is a scammer,” Mark Brooks, editor of Online Personals Watch told Glamour. Con artists will user publicly obtained profile photos, often of military members, and create a fake profile to target people. The FBI recently issued a warning about a different kind of online dating scam known as “ransomware.” It’s a virus that will make your computer inoperable until you hand over a payment.

Mark Brooks: B.S. misquote. I said, 'on some sites as many as 1 in 10 profiles is a scammer.'

Let’s Get Digital: An Oral History Of Online Dating

Posted on October 25, 2012

Cupid digitalBULLET – Fall 2012 –

JON BOEDE, CO-FOUNDER MATCHMAKER: In 1984, my friend and I were running [dating] bulletin boards. The Internet obliterated the bulletin board world. Boede converted the business to a website. Lycos bought for $44.5 million. By 2004 there wasn’t much left of it.

GARY KREMEN, FOUNDER MATCH: I started Match in ’93. I needed to get married. I wrote some software that matched people through email and attached profiles. Kremen partnered with VCs who sold Match.com to Cendant for $7m in 1998. Nine months later, Cendant sold it to IAC for ~$50m.

JONATHAN CRUTCHLEY, FOUNDER MANHUNT.NET: Jonathan was a successful Boston real estate investor. In 1992, he bought half of a popular gay telephone chat line that became Manhunt.net. Phone-line revenues peaked ~year 2000. We organized events at gay bars and advertised in gay newspapers in new York and Philadelphia.

ANDREW CONRU, FOUNDER FRIEND FINDER: In 1993 I started WebPersonals.com. It had ~150k members by the time I sold it in early ’95. Conru then focused on FriendFinder. People started uploading risqué photos. I put a link on the site: “If you’re looking for erotic relationships, click here” to a duplicate of the site, AdultFriendFinder. Conru sold for $500m in 2007.

MANDY GINSBERG, PRESIDENT MATCH: I don’t know how to prove it, but there’s been a shift. We started to see a lot more people who felt comfortable putting out personalized things, commenting on things, uploading their own pictures of things.

SAM YAGAN, CO-FOUNDER OKCUPID: We’re helping erode the stigma for the entire industry. I think it helps that we’re free, which makes it all seem less intentional.

MARKUS FRIND, FOUNDER PLENTYOFFISH: The reason for our success is that we actually helped people meet. Our mobile traffic was around 6% in the under-30 category. Now it’s sitting at 70%.

The future of online dating might very well be its own demise, a movement toward a place where the distinction between meeting in the real world and meeting online no longer exists.

POF iconFORBES – Aug 24 – Markus Frind, founder of POF estimates that based on the number of marriages that have resulted in these matches, over one million babies have been born as a result of his website. Mobile Dating Apps Grow In Popularity

Posted on August 20, 2012

Mobile dating appsWASHINGTON POST – Aug 19 – Americans now use dating apps more than online dating sites, according to a 2011 report by Flurry Analytics. Globally, the mobile dating market is expected to be worth $2.3 billion by 2016, up from $1 billion in 2011, according to Juniper Research. In June, six participants signed up for a mobile dating boot camp, organized by cyber-dating expert Julie Spira, at the iDate Mobile dating conference. They sat before a roomful of industry executives to discuss the apps they used for two weeks and provided honest feedbacks. Developers are turning to real-life concepts to woo users, like the common friend. That’s where Facebook comes in, with apps like Zoosk and Are you Interested? A new wave of apps such as Coffee Meets Bagel and Yoke focus on common friends and use Facebook profile information to match people. “You can judge a person by the company that they keep,” said Mark Brooks, analyst and consultant to the Internet dating industry. "There is no secret formula for an app to succeed", said Brooks. But “the more you can model the real world, the better you’ll do,” he said. New mobile app developers realize this and are tapping into the wealth of information available on Facebook, while trying to balance users’ privacy concerns. Spira says that just like online dating, people should apply common sense with an app.
