Online Dating Traffic Surges Between Boxing Day And New Year’s Eve

Posted on December 26, 2012

Onlinedating key on keyboardHUFFINGTON POST – Dec 26 – Mark Brooks, a dating analyst and consultant to the Internet dating industry, said it was the endless stream of awkward questions from family members that prompted many to search for love online this time of year. “The effect becomes more pronounced over the Xmas vacations and party season," he said. “Questions such as 'have you been dating anyone recently' and 'do you think you’ll ever marry’ become 'On your own, are you?'." Kate Taylor, a relationship expert at Match.com, said people look back at their achievements over the past twelve months, and think about their New Year's resolutions. On Match.com ~4M unique connections are expected to be made; with 3M email messages written; 2.5M 'winks' sent; and 500K IM conversations taking place. Brett Harding, managing director for Lovestruck, said registrations increase by 48% during this period. For eHarmony, the number of registrations was 3.5 times higher than the week immediately before Christmas. Cupid.com's Sean Wood also suggested that the pressure on couples in the Christmas period could also lead to more break ups – resulting in more singles on the scene by Boxing Day. AshleyMadison.com biggest spike came immediately after New Year's Eve. The first working day after New Year's there was a 413% increase in member sign-ups with a total of 9,857 new members. What's really interesting is that for many sites, the traffic then falls again drastically in the spring. “Internet daters tend to stick around for about three months," said analyst Brooks. "Then they bail, then they come back, or go to another site, or multiple internet dating sites."

Cupid In Legal Fight For French Domain Name

Posted on November 19, 2012

Cupidoncom logoHERALD SCOTLAND – Nov 19 – Cupid has found itself embroiled in a €1M (£800K) legal dispute over the way it has romanced French customers. Cupid has been challenged by continental rival Cupidon over the Scottish company's use of the Cupidon.com domain name it bought 18 months ago for £175,000. The result of the case, which is being heard by the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris, is expected this week. Cupidon, the owner of the Cuipdon.fr, Cupidon.be and Cupidon.net websites, claims its trade mark has been infringed and that Cupid is trading unfairly. Cupidon is seeking €800K in damages over Cupid's use of the Cupidon.com name, €75K on the grounds of unfair competition and €75K for tardiness in responding to Cupidon's request that it stop using the domain as well as assorted costs and daily charges if Cupid does not comply.

Cupid Diversifies From Dating Into Property

Posted on November 5, 2012

Roomwise logoTHE SCOTSMAN – Nov 4 – Cupid Plc is moving into the property market. Cupid's new website, Roomwise, allows customers to rent out rooms, whole flats or even caravans and tents. Cupid will use its database of 62M users to market the properties as part of its plans to use its IT infrastructure to move into new business areas. Cupid said that it had spent less than £100K developing Roomwise, which it described as being “a very early-stage project in beta testing”. Brian Gruber (GM of Cupid), who came up with the idea for the website and who is acting as its general manager for Cupid, said: “The project grew out of my own travel experiences.” Whenever he travelled, he could only choose well-publicised options, such as hotels. But then he would meet people staying in much nicer accommodation they had found through “a friend of a friend”.
