A Guide to Dating Sites for Niche Interests

Posted on November 1, 2005

SEATTLE TIMES — Oct 30 — There are the shopping-mall dating sites (Match.com, Yahoo! Personals), then there are the boutiques. JDate.com; Jewish singles community. Engage.com; a social networking site where your friends set you up.  DateMyPet.com; hookup for yourself and your pet.  Teamdating.com; girl-friends join to meet guy-friends go out in a group.  Fitsingles.com; for people who like to run, hike, kayak, cycle and do pull-ups in doorways.  DegreeDate.com; for the educated. SingleParentMeet.com & SingleParentsMingle.com; first you've got to impress your date – then your date's kids.  Chemistry.com; uses an eHarmony-style compatibility test – rejection can take weeks instead of minutes. SpiritSingles.com; new-age site where spiritual integrity trumps the shallow pursuit for hot babes. Riiigghhht.

Specialized Dating Soars

Posted on October 27, 2005

UNION LEADER — Oct 24– DateMyPet.com is one of hundreds now available for people trying to find mates with whom they share a common interest. For daters new to the online world, niche dating offers hundreds of alternatives to the more commonly used dating sites. There are dating sites for Buddhists, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Italians, Greeks, Indians, and Latinos, among other groups. Vegetarians, cyclists, recovering addicts, fitness fanatics, and disabled singles have their own sites, too. SquareDating.com helps connect single alumni from top colleges and universities. NoLongerLonely.com allows singles suffering a mental illness to seek each other out. LittlePeopleMeet.com is one of several sites exclusively for singles with dwarfism. And MilitaryDate.com hooks up servicemen and women across the country. GreenSingles.com is celebrating its 10th year online shortly. "When people begin to get serious about looking for long-term relationships or marriage, they're more likely to want to meet people of a similar background, race, or religion," said Gail Laguna, VP for Spark Networks. Spark recently acquired MingleMatch which oversees 21 affinity-focused online personals sites, including DeafSinglesConnection, Interracial Singles Connection, Single Parents Mingle, and Prime Singles Connection – for online daters more than 40 years old.

Niche Dating Start-ups

Posted on October 6, 2005

RealidatecomKNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS — Oct 4 — Realidate helps singles meet through volunteer activities benefiting San Francisco Bay-area charities.  DatemyPet focuses on pet owners.  Asoundmatch matches music-loving singles based on a 12-question survey about music interests. "When it comes to this particular industry, size definitely matters," says Kristin Kelly, Match.com, who says the site signs up 60,000 new members daily.  "The main reason you go online is to expand your possibilities, so having a really large range of people is important. From there, you can be as broad or as narrow as you want to be. You define the pool."

Where Singles Click

Posted on September 13, 2005

DatemypetcomMERCURY NEWS — Sept 11 — Wendell Loyd has gone on plenty of bad dates. He wasn't meeting the right woman so the former software developer created http://www.realidate.com, which helps singles meet through volunteer activities benefiting Bay Area charities.  "A lot of people don't tell the truth," says Wendy, who met her boyfriend through www.datemypet.com. "With the big sites, you're getting at a demographic that's just, well — everybody. There's no pre-screening for people who might have the same interests or what you're looking for." Sandler, of San Francisco, is working on www.asoundmatch.com, which matches music-loving singles.

Mark Brooks: If you have a particular 'thing' that you are looking for, there's probably an online personals site that caters to your needs. However, I recommend choosing from the top 15 if you don't have a particular preference.

Blow a Virtual Kiss this Valentine’s Day on DateMyPet.com

Posted on January 29, 2005

PRWEB — Jan 25 — "Date Me, Date My Pet." The DateMyPet site was launched on September 2004, and has continued to grow in popularity. Datemypet.com offers light-hearted virtual flirting techniques such as the Virtual Kiss and the "how cute is my pet?" survey. It is not uncommon for animal lovers to find themselves with a mate or partner that is intolerant of their love for their pets i.e. "I hate your dog"s drooling", "I"m allergic to your cat" and "I"m afraid of horses". Perhaps this Valentine"s Day will find couples horseback riding, kitty adoring, and doggy walking, among other ideas for shared enjoyment!

Mark Brooks: AnimalAttraction is another interesting pet/dating site.

Online Dating Sites Help Single Pet Lovers Bark up the Right Tree

Posted on January 2, 2005

TWIN CITIES PIONEER PRESS — Jan 2 — Wendy Peikes was tired of dating guys who'd vanish when they'd met her housemates — three hairy, energetic dogs. So she took to her computer keyboard and joined DateMyPet where pet aversion is not tolerated. "There are 40 million single pet owners," said Dan Cohen, CEO of animalattraction.com. "This is a big business." Yahoo personals surveyed 5,000 users and found that 91% of them would use a pet as a conversation starter. More than three-quarters said a person's pet gives greater insight into the owner's personality.

Mark Brooks: Maraud your ever so cute puppy outside a Starbucks and see how many singles you meet in the time it takes to drink your venti latte! DateMyPet and AnimalAttraction are onto a good thing.

Love with a leash

Posted on September 6, 2004

Mercurynews.com — Wendy Peikes was tired of dating guys who'd vanish when they'd met her housemates — three hairy, energetic dogs. So she took to her computer keyboard and found an online dating site where pet aversion is not tolerated. This new breed of Internet dating is no Chihuahua. “There are 40 million single pet owners,'' said Dan Cohen, CEO of animalattraction.com. What (datemypet.com)'s creator, Rob Yau, recognized as this market's appeal is the strong sense that many people have: People with animals translate to people with heart.' Two-thirds of the surveyed users said they'd prefer to see a picture of a potential date with his or her pet than without.
