The Rise of Women-Focused Dating Apps in India

Posted on August 5, 2019

Dating-apps-indiaINDIAN EXPRESS – Aug 5 – Dil Mil, Gleeden and Bumble are a clear indicators of a new trend of women-focused dating apps in India. Indian men are not allowed on Dil Mil. The app is for women and NRI (non-resident Indian) men only. French dating platform Gleeden, which markets itself as an app for women who are already in a relationship, is free for women but charges men to send messages. On Bumble, only a woman can initiate a conversation and her identity is protected. Priti Joshi, Bumble's Global Director of Strategy, said their initial research has shown women wanted to feel secure and comfortable when making connections online. "Therefore, we developed a feature specific to India – for women using Bumble Date, only her first initial will show. In India, there is still a certain taboo attached to online dating, which is why many users, especially women resort to fake profiles or different geolocation to protect their identity."

Why This Sikh Entrepreneur Created A Jewish Dating App

Posted on October 12, 2017

Shalom dating appJTA – Oct 11 – KJ Dhaliwal and Sukhmeet Toor, both Sikhs, are behind Dil Mil, described as a "Tinder alternative" for the South Asian community. Since they founded the app in 2015, it has made ~5M matches. They are now launching Shalom, a dating app for the Jewish community. "We saw a lot of similarities in the Jewish and South Asian communities – the values around family and marriage," said Dhaliwal. Shalom and Dil Mil rely on algorithms that suggest matches based on user behavior and data. Users can access Shalom both by the app, as well as through Facebook Messenger. On Facebook, users chat with a bot that asks them questions about themselves and suggests possible matches. Conversing with the bot is counterintuitive at times. For example, users have to follow a specific format when giving their geographic locations.

Dating App Dil Mil Is Using AI To Help South Asians Find Love

Posted on May 5, 2017

Dil mil iconFORBES – May 4 – Dil Mil dating app aims to combine traditional South Asian values with modern technology. It uses AI and predictive analytics. Founded in 2014, Dil Mil offers a middle ground for South Asians who aren't looking for either hookups or arranged marriages. Traditionally, "aunties," either familial or friends of the family, played the role of matchmaker in South Asian countries. But with Dil Mil, the matchmaking process is taking place on the app – kind of like a "virtual" auntie. Dhaliwal and Toor worked together to build the app and website. The duo have raised ~$4M in pre-Series A funding and have been backed by celebrity investors such as 500 Startups, Will Bunker of Match.com and Scott Banister of PayPal.
