Friends-First Dating: The New Alternative to Swiping Apps

Posted on November 10, 2025
Two people sitting on the ground next to a car, facing each other with friendly expressions.

POPSUGAR – Young people are turning away from traditional dating apps and moving toward “friends-first” dating that revives the idea of the meet-cute. Instead of swiping through strangers, they prefer meeting through mutual friends or curated communities that feel safer and more authentic. Apps such as Cerca, which matches users through contacts in their phone books, and Fourplay Social, which focuses on double dates, are leading this shift. The idea is that mutual connections create accountability and reduce the risk of deception or unsafe encounters. Cerca’s founder, Myles Slayton, says users trust their friends’ opinions more than algorithms, though concerns about privacy and data security remain.

OPW – Fourplay Social, the app that lets singles team up with a friend and match with other pairs, has changed its name to PlotTwist. Cofounded by Danielle Dietzek, the platform focuses on making dating more social and less transactional by encouraging group outings.

The new name reflects the unexpected outcomes that often happen when people use the app — from new friendships and funny stories to romance. The company said the switch also clears up confusion the old name sometimes created.

Dating Apps Shift Toward Simpler, Structured Experiences

Posted on August 4, 2025

Breeze logoBBC – Dating apps are evolving to meet changing user habits. Breeze skips pre-date chat, auto-books dates at partner venues, and uses upfront payments to reduce no-shows. A brief chat window before and after the date allows for coordination and closure. Tinder recently launched a double-date feature, letting friends create joint profiles. Hinge introduced Hinge X, a £24.99/week premium tier offering features like priority likes and access to preferred match types. Meanwhile, niche apps like Feeld, Fourplay, Lex, and Raya continue to expand. These changes reflect a clear shift toward simpler, faster, and more structured dating experiences.

Posted on October 10, 2024

Dating pitch decksNEW YORK TIMES – Analog dating methods are making a comeback, with people using fliers, billboards, and dating events to find connections. Dating app Fourplay launched a flyer campaign in New York City, leading to a rise in analog approaches like "dating business cards" and "pitch me" events. In Philadelphia, a man used a billboard to advertise his single status, garnering hundreds of responses. Events like Tinder Disrupt, where friends give PowerPoint presentations to pitch singles, are gaining popularity. Fourplay, which facilitates double dates, faced early challenges, including COVID-19 and technical issues, but the founders overcame them by hiring in-house developers. The app gained traction through user-generated content, particularly a viral TikTok video, and now boasts 60K users. They credit their success to learning from mistakes, leveraging their network, and adapting to the tech space despite their initial inexperience.

Fourplay: Dating App for Double, Less Awkward Dates

Posted on March 5, 2020

Fourplay logoONWARD STATE – Mar 5 – Julie Griggs and Danielle Dietzek are hoping to change the dating scene with their new app, Fourplay. Anyone can team up with as many friends and match with as many different types of people as they want. The pair's app is available now for download on the App Store and Google Play.
