Matchmaking Based on “DNA Compatibility”

Posted on February 13, 2020

Instantchemistry logoSCIENTIFIC AMERICAN – Feb 13 – Genetic matchmaking is entering the mainstream. Earlier this year, Nozze, a Japanese dating service, established a DNA Matching Course and hosted a related DNA Matching Party. For 86,400 yen ($790), men are paired with prospective dates based upon 16K variations in HLA gene complexes. There is also Swiss pioneer GenePartner, Houston-based Pheramor and services that combine genetic and non-genetic profiles like Instant Chemistry and SingldOut. Since the 1970s, researchers have found that variations in the genes of the major histocompatability complex (MHC) play a role in mate selection in mice. Swiss biologist Claus Wedekind did a study known as the sweaty T-shirt study. Researchers had men wear T-shirts for extended periods of time. Then they had women sniff the shirts to rate the former wearer's sexual attractiveness. They found an inverse correlation between MHC similarity and attraction score. Harvard geneticist George Church has championed another version of compatibility. Using whole genome sequencing, he hopes to match couples to reduce or eliminate many inherited diseases.

DNA Romance – DNA-driven Dating Startup

Posted on February 16, 2019

Dnaromance logoGEEKWIRE – Feb 15 – DNA Romance is a Vancouver, B.C.-based startup that launched in 2014. It generates potential matches based on a DNA analysis of genes involved with immune system response that research has connected to human attraction. People can use a kit purchased from DNA Romance to sample and create their genetic blueprint, or share their results from one of the other DNA sequencing companies. The startup has raised $120K from friends and family and has customers in 93 countries. Their business model was initially subscription based, but in the fall they shifted to selling home DNA testing kits and online advertising to generate revenue. The kits cost $74.75. DNA Romance is available online, with plans to develop mobile apps. Competitors in the DNA-assisted dating space include Pheramor, GenePartner and Instant Chemistry.

DNA Testing – Modern Method To Predict Chemistry

Posted on May 2, 2016

Genepartner logo 2016MIRROR.CO.UK – May 2 – DNA testing has become the modern-day method for determining everything from a person's ancestry to their likelihood of getting certain illnesses. Scientists have claimed that our genetics also play a vital role in how attracted we feel towards a potential mate and how well-suited we are to them. GenePartner provides special DNA tests to determine just this. The clinic was founded by Dr Tamara Brown and Joëlle Apter. "People need to match both socially and biologically," explained Dr Tamara. "It is possible to find out both when meeting of course, but the number of singles searching for partners online has increased dramatically. In this virtual world, chemistry is something we cannot sense. That's where DNA testing can help. If you are a strong biological match, it goes a long way towards lasting happiness," she says.

Doubts Linger Over Genetic Test

Posted on March 17, 2012

Genepartner logo newMEDILL REPORTS – Mar 14 – GenePartner claims that for $249 and a cheek swab, it has the formula to match clients with those who are genetically compatible. After ordering a collection kit, the participant gives a saliva sample and mails it to GenePartner. Approximately two weeks later, results quantifying genetic compatibility with others who have also taken the test are available. It rates genetic compatibility in five areas: overall results, level of attraction, type of interest, symmetry of attraction and probability of a successful pregnancy. Genetic compatibility alone is only half the equation in maintaining a healthy relationship. "There may be truth in genetic attraction, but to me that would be an initial attraction and from there it would depend on compatibility in character and the ability to keep a relationship happy," said Joanna Hakimi, a licensed marriage and family therapist at Symmetry Counseling in Chicago. Eli Finkel, a social psychologist at Northwestern University, who has done extensive research on online dating services and briefly covers GenePartner in his work, is highly skeptical of the premise behind the idea. "Anytime there’s a new technology that comes out, dating is usually around 10 seconds behind," he said.

DNA Can Help You Find The Perfect Lover

Posted on November 8, 2011

Genepartner logo newHUFFINGTON POST – Nov 8 - A Swiss company called GenePartner has developed a biological matching system using your human leukocyte antigen, or HLA, genes to find your perfect match. The company works with several dating sites around the world–Sense2love and Eventful Dating to name two–and tests interested people by mail. You get a couple of Q-tips, scrape the inside of your cheek and that of the other party or parties you'd like to have checked, and return it to the company. Later, you receive access to a closed account on the company's website, where you can read at your leisure about how well you supposedly fit together, genetically. The company's total manpower proves to be two women: the director, Joelle Apter, and the head of research, Tamara Brown.

DNA Matching

Posted on January 11, 2010

Dna matching picture MAIL ONLINE – Jan 11 – DNA matching offers the chance to pick a partner with the widest possible variety of genes and therefore the best immune system for any potential children,’ explains Eric Holzle, a former engineer-turned-matchmaker who runs ScientificMatch. DNA testing can ascertain whether or not you will have ‘a more satisfying sex life with less chance of cheating’. Both ScientificMatch and Swiss company, GenePartner.com, which provides a DNA matching service for a variety of dating sites in Europe and the U.S., cite the infamous 1995 ‘sweaty T-shirt’ experiment in which women were asked to sniff the T-shirts of similarly aged men and rate their body odours as proof that DNA matching works. ScientificMatch offers life membership site for ~£1,200. Meanwhile, GenePartner’s tests start at ~£60. FULL ARTICLE @ DAILYMAIL.CO.UK

Clicck And GenePartner To Collaborate On DNA Study Of Gays And Lesbians

Posted on November 6, 2009

PR NEWSWIRE – Nov 5 – Clicck.com has signed an exclusive agreement with GenePartner to conduct a revolutionary new DNA study on gays and lesbians. The goal of the study is to determine if there is, in fact, a “gay gene” at the root of homosexuality. DNA samples will be voluntarily collected from Clicck's LGBT members and used to generate an algorithm for biological matchmaking. This new service, aptly named “In Your Genes” is scheduled to launch in Q1 2010.

Blinded By Science In The Online Dating Game

Posted on July 20, 2009

Dnacouple NY TIMES — July 17 – Professor Helen Fisher, of Chemistry.com, studied the neural chemistry of people in love. She zeroes in on six specific chemicals, which are linked to certain traits. Those with a preponderance of dopamine and norepinephrine she named “explorers,” those with serotonin are “builders,” those with testosterone are “directors” and those with estrogen and oxytocin are “negotiators.” The 56-question test that Fisher has developed for Chemistry.com helps identify who is a builder, an explorer and so on. She has also studied 28,000 people and found that those who are explorers tend to pick explorers, builders tend to choose builders, while directors and negotiators often select each other. James Houran, a relationship psychologist who has developed “compatibility matching tools” for Plentyoffish.com, a free dating site, said his work indicated that people who met someone through the site were more satisfied in their relationships than those who met in other ways. GenePartner scientists developed a formula that successfully determined genetic compatibility. After receiving the DNA results users can hunt for their genetic soul mate on Genepartner.com. FULL ARTICLE @ NY TIMES
