Grouper Soon Available On iPhone

Posted on May 1, 2013

Grouper logo new Sep 12GIGAOM – Apr 30 – There have been no shortage of next-generation dating apps launching recently. And most of these, like Grindr or Tinder, are already mobile and location-based. But Grouper CEO Michael Waxman said the company will add the benefits of mobile while maintaining the central premise of the app that’s made it so popular. Grouper has been working to streamline the process and get people together faster. Adding a mobile app is the final piece. The new iPhone app will be available next week.

Modern Dating Is A Group Sport For The Hashtag Generation

Posted on March 18, 2013

Grouper logo new Sep 12NPR – Mar 14 – Modern dating is now a group sport, said Michael Waxman, CEO of Grouper, a dating site that uses Facebook profiles to set up blind dates of six. People in their 20s are used to experiencing and sharing things through social media. They're turned off by labels like "dates" and they hate being rejected. Users sign up for Grouper through Facebook. And it uses their Facebook profile to match them up with a blind date. Next, they recruit two of their friends. The blind date does the same. And then, Grouper sends all six of them on a group date. Everyone pays $20 — to make sure they show up, as well as cover the first round of drinks.

Dating Sites Remake The Introductions

Posted on January 30, 2013

Tawkify logoBOSTON GLOBE – Jan 29 – Tawkify, a blind-date matchmaking site, bills itself as “the new old way to date.” It is one of several matchmaking start-ups tailored to millennials who seek companionship, but who have no interest in enduring a string of traditional one-on-one dates to find it. “Social club” is how Grouper is billed. Grouper uses members’ Facebook profiles to set up a date between two people — who each invite two friends along, increasing the odds of clicking with someone. MeetCute sends potential matches to a location but doesn’t reveal them to each other, forcing participants to connect with their MeetCute match or with a total stranger. OkCupid just launched Crazy Blind Date, an app that lets users pick a location and a day, then sit back and get paired up someone to go out with. Such casual or creative meet-ups may offer more “guaranteed fun” than the typical dinner or drinks. Making online meet-ups as relaxed as possible could be the way to keep young people on the Web dating scene, said a Northwestern University psychology professor, Eli Finkel, who studies romantic relationships.

Dating Sites For All Ages. AARP Launches Dating Service

Posted on December 3, 2012

Senior dateUSA TODAY – Dec 3 – The latest trend in online dating? Going offline as fast as you can. AARP is launching an idating service in partnership with HowAboutWe. 25% of AARP's 37M members are single and over half of the singles are under 70. Online dating industry consultant Mark Brooks says the AARP move into dating seems smart. "Seniors is a very good niche. Most dating sites skew toward guys, with more guys than women. But senior dating sites have more women. Being a 75 year old single man is the equivalent of being a 21year old hottie."

Older sites such as Match.com and newer ones such as DinnerDate, CupidRadar and Grouper, all are focusing on the importance of a personal connection offline. "I cringe a little when people describe it as online dating," said Michael Waxman, co-founder and CEO of Grouper. The typical experience for a Grouper member is to spend ~5 minutes on our website and ~2 hours at a bar with your friends." By the end of this year, Match.com say the site will have hosted ~ 2K events with 150K singles. PlentyofFish, a free online site, also hosts facetoface events.

Hybrid Social Networks Help Users Connect Online, Meet Up Offline

Posted on November 9, 2012

Grouper logo new Sep 12LA TIMES – Nov 9 – Hybrid social networks are connecting strangers with similar interests online, then directing them to meet in person. The sites are doing especially well among 20s – 30s. Grubwithus is a Venice start-up that enables users to attend group meals. Grubwithus has tripled its user base since the beginning of the year, with meal reservations growing 15% month over month; the company claims 80K subscribers. It launched out of start-up accelerator program Y Combinator and has raised $7.6M in financing from investors including Ashton Kutcher and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Still, some of the start-ups have been slow to get off the ground. After receiving $5M in funding in the spring, Lifecrowd, an experience marketplace for in-person group activities such as kickball and kayaking, went offline a few weeks ago. On its website, the company promises to "be back soon with an even better Lifecrowd." Another rising tech start-up is Grouper, which connects two groups of friends for face-to-face hangouts after pairing them online. Users apply for membership and are matched with someone else on the site. Each person then invites two other friends to join in for drinks; after prepaying online for the first round of drinks, the group of six meets at a bar chosen by Grouper. The setup takes away some of the awkwardness of meeting someone new alone, said Michael Waxman, Grouper's co-founder and chief executive.

Grouper Expands To 10 More Cities

Posted on September 14, 2012

Grouper logo new Sep 12HUFFINGTON POST – Sep 13 – Grouper is an online "social club" that launched more than a year ago in New York City. The site expanded to 10 more cities: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia and Seattle. Signing up takes about a minute because the site creates a profile for you by pulling information from your Facebook page. Then you send an email inviting two friends to be your wingmen or wingwomen. Lastly, you answer five questions on a sliding scale. Then you wait two to three weeks for an email from Grouper. There's a waiting list because matches are determined by staff members in addition to a computer algorithm, according to the company. The email sets the location for your meeting and offers various times for you and your friends to choose from. Each of the six people must pay $20, which goes to pay for the first round of drinks and the site's fee. Grouper dates are more enjoyable because when you're with your friends, you're going to behave more comfortably and naturally.
