Queer Spaces Raised $1M Through Crowdfunding

Posted on January 10, 2023

Queer SpacesQUEER SPACES – Four months after its incorporation, Queer Spaces, incubated and spun out of Hornet, has closed its crowdfunding campaign. ~100 investors invested $1M in the company to create safe digital spaces for queer people. Among Spaces' high-profile tech industry investors are individuals including Mark Suster (Upfront), Sean Rad (Tinder), Tim Howes (Netscape), Max Burger (APAX), Niklas Lindstrom (Skout, Meet Group, UnitQ) and Sam Altman (YC, OpenAI). The investment will go towards accelerating the app's growth, building an in-demand Android version by year’s end, and kicking off a marketing spend to follow the app's launch in March of this year.

Apple Removes Hornet Gay Dating App From Turkish Store

Posted on August 10, 2021

Hornet logo 2018SPIEGEL.DE – Aug 10 – In Turkey, digital LGBTQ + offers are repeatedly blocked. Now Hornet has disappeared from the App Store. About a year ago, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accused LGBTQ + activists of undermining "our national and spiritual values" and "poisoning" young people. The verbal attack was not an isolated incident. Government politicians in Turkey repeatedly attract attention with homophobic and transphobic statements. Apple has removed Hornet from the Turkish app store. The reason for this is a Turkish court ruling from last year. Hornet was blocked on August 6, 2020, citing Law 5651. Originally, the law was supposed to protect the Turkish public from cybercrime. However, it grants the government extensive monitoring and blocking rights on the Internet. Hornet joins a number of similar cases. The gabile.com platform was also blocked last year. The site was created in Turkey in 1999 and is the oldest dating and exchange platform for the LGBTQ + community in the country. Grindr has also been unavailable in Turkey since 2013.

Dating Apps Say Sex Isn’t Everything in a Post-pandemic World

Posted on June 22, 2021

Hyperconnect logoREUTERS – June 22 – "There's a really interesting trend that has been taking place in the connection space, which is this desire to have platonic relationships," said Bumble founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd. Her company is investing in its Bumble BFF (best friends forever) feature, which it said comprised ~9% of Bumble's total monthly active users in Sep 2020. Meanwhile Match Group paid $1.7B this year for South Korean social media firm Hyperconnect, whose apps let people chat from across the world using real-time translation. Hyperconnect's revenue jumped 50% last year. Gay dating app Hornet, meanwhile, aims to be more of a social network focused on users' personal interests, rather than solely a hook-up service.
