eHarmony clearly has more guys than girls. Given the raunchy TRUE advertising, one would expect a higher representation of males than the 116 scored here.  I think this is because TRUE is using their raunchy advertising in male oriented spots, and also, the edgy ads still manage to attract women.  American Singles scored higher with a 120 for males. The gay sites and PlentyofFish have the highest addiction levels. Yahoo Personals, TRUE, and Mate1 scored a little low for user engagement. All in the 74-78% range. – Mark Brooks

Chemistry.com Needs Guys

Posted on February 26, 2007

ChemistryOPW — Feb 26 — Chemistry.com has done a great job of reeling in the ladies. Possibly too good a job. Here's an email that was sent to Match.com members today. – Mark Brooks

"We have too many women* and we need your help. We created a marketing campaign to attract as many of the most captivating women to our site as possible. And it worked! Actually, it worked so well that our ratio of women to men is way off. So men, come visit Chemistry.com and see what it's like to have the odds in your favor!  *Disclaimer: We know you see a lot of disclaimers at the bottom filled with all kinds of legal mumbojumbo, however, we just want to use this space to reassure you, we really do have too many women and need your help."

USA Love Brokers Eye China

Posted on February 16, 2007
Asian_dating_3REUTERS — Feb 13 — Match.com has secured Love21CN.com , one of China's biggest online dating service providers, as its main target for a potential stake purchase or business partnership. eHarmony is also looking at potential partners in China. In November, China.com said it would team up with Meetic for business promotion. Meetic in July also launched a localized Chinese site called "Mi Tang," or "Sweetie" in English. A Meetic-led venture capital consortium is also expected to invest $20 million in Yeeyoo.  iResearch expects the Chinese online personals market revenue to grow by ~60% annually to 653 million yuan ($84.21 million) by 2008.  MySpace will launch in China within months. GSR Ventures and U.S. fund Mayfield jointly invested $2 million in "Baihe" — "Lily" in English — in late 2005.  In December, Baihe began charging 1,980 yuan per person for its high-end "Golden" service.  Most Chinese dating sites are free.
Mark Brooks: I have an interview with the CEO of Baihe.com lined up for OPW in March. Online dating has a casual connotation in China and is often referred to as 'friends-making.' The Asian internet dating conference is scheduled for May in Shanghai. See idate2007.com.

PlentyofFish Inspires Jobster to Attack the Monster

Posted on February 9, 2007

JobsterTECH CRUNCH — Feb 7 — Jobster, which has raised nearly $50 million in venture capital, is making a dramatic business model shift starting tonight, by making all job listings free (and much more). Their goal is to do what PlentyOfFish is doing to Match.com. Jobster hopes to make a large dent in Monster's billion dollar a year revenue stream. FULL ARTICLE @ TECH CRUNCH

Mark Brooks: Jobster burned through a lot of money, lost out to Monster, laid staff off…and gone free. Is 'free,' really the way to go?   How duplicatable is the PlentyofFish business model?  Your comments please.

The Disastrous Effects of Match.com

Posted on January 31, 2007

WASHINGTON POST — Jan 28 — (Written by a woman interviewed by The Washington Post whose mother helps her find dates on Match.com.)  We do everything possible to please our man. You prefer French cooking? Mais oui, mon cher! You want my hair long? No problem.  What the hell has happened? Match.com and other online dating services have given men access to a smorgasbord of women.  We are bolting sooner and sooner if there is a lull in the conversation or the slightest hint of incompatibility, knowing that the next one will appear within a few mouse clicks.  Be honest about your age and size. You may think you will charm him with your dazzling personality but you're simply wasting his time and yours if you lie.  Don't respond to winks or messages from men with no photos, they're married or involved.  If he doesn't ask to meet you within a week of phone calls and e-mails, he is either busy serial dating or too busy working to date you.  Keep the date short and do not even think of sleeping with him until he is clearly nuts about you. The way he treats your family is very important. If he is cold, indifferent, or not eager to spend time with them, run! FULL ARTICLE @ WASHINGTON POST

Mark Brooks: Thanks to Kathryn Lord for the heads up on this article.  Is internet dating really responsible for the demise of the long term relationship?  Let's discuss this further, your comments please…
