Romancing the Phone

Posted on March 23, 2006

Matchcom_17THE GUARDIAN UNLIMITED — Mar 23 — You can pull out your mobile phone and fire off an SMS to your internet dating website. A few minutes later it will send you five pictures of potential dates – all within a 10-minute walk of your local.  This may be the future of online dating. With more than 2 million Britons signed up to singles sites, the industry is keen to explore and exploit the marriage between mobile phones and the net.  Dating sites use mobile telephony to enable subscribers to send "text flirts" – SMS messages. Snog London is trialing this technology to offer "instant dates". Match.com already offers wireless dating in the US and Japan, and plans to launch in the UK by the end of this year. The American service, launched in 2003, has 120,000 subscribers who pay $5 to add it to their existing online service. Match.com's Europe director Kevin Cornil: "Nearly half the daters signed up for match mobile are under 25 – considerably younger than the average age on the website."  FULL ARTICLE @ THE GUARDIAN UNLIMITED

Mark Brooks: And Webdate.com, and Lavalife.com.  Webdate has the leading mobile dating application.

True Love Exists

Posted on March 23, 2006

Matchcom_16DAILY RECORD — Mar 21 — Boffins 'prove' passion can be perfect .. but it takes a year to blossom. Forget love at first sight.  Scientists have discovered true love only begins after 12 months.  Research has revealed real love blossoms with time, especially for men.  147 couples took part in the study. According to the study, men are more likely to find true love than women.  The research, by psychologists at Bath University, was commissioned by Match.com.  To date, there has been no systematic study of love in the context of relationships formed via online dating sites.

The full article was originally published at Daily Record, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: I'm not seeing anything really earth shattering here.  147 couples seems like a small sample.  But, it's a veritable start.  With millions of daters online, major sites should be able to perform studies of hundreds of thousands.  I'm looking forward to the day online dating sites truly open up to the fantastic and extensive university brainpower. Psychologists around the world must be itching to get their hands on the major online dating sites data and research resources.  Your comments please…

Perils of Online Dating Prompt Safety Efforts

Posted on March 22, 2006

Myspacecom_3REUTERS — Mar 21 — Josie Brown never had a chance against her 6-foot-6-inch killer.  John Gaumer, confessed and led Baltimore County police to Brown's body on February 7, listed his height and other attributes in his quest for dates on MySpace.com.  "There are millions of people we're dealing with here and somehow people think they are all preachers," said Paul Falzone, CEO of Together Dating, a brick-and-mortar company that performs background checks on all members. Falzone says background checks result in 10% of applicants being rejected.  For most of the 40 million people using Internet sites for dating and socializing each month, a disastrous 15 minutes over coffee at Starbucks is the worst they will suffer.  Only a small percentage of "intimate partner violence" — nearly 700,000 such incidents were reported to the U.S. Dept of Justice in 2001 — originate from Internet dating, according to Mark Brooks, editor of Online Personals Watch, which monitors the dating industry.  "To think a felon could find a victim, especially for a heinous crime, gives me the heebie-jeebies. I do all I can do to prevent that," said Herb Vest, TRUE.com CEO.  So far, California, Florida, Texas and Michigan have considered (background checks) legislation.  Yahoo! and Match.com, the industry leaders with 6 million and 15 million monthly visitors respectively, continually stress dating safety.  "The Internet has its dark side and they are not doing everything they can to keep sexual predators and gold diggers off these sites. If you don't police yourselves, the government will come in and police you," said Michigan state Sen. Alan Cropsey.  "There are other ways to get to who that person is, rather than have the government ram a business model down your throat," said Abe Smilowitz, CEO of Webdate.  Webdate uses real-time video as a safety measure, allowing prospective dates to chat and get a look at each other via Webcams.  Companies like Safedate and Honestyonline are springing up to run background checks for individuals. According to Dr. John Gray, education is the solution.  "The warning signs often come out right away. Beware of someone who can solve all your problems or who comes on really strong," said Gray.

It’s Not Just Your Kid’s Internet: Online Dating Appeals to More Mature

Posted on March 16, 2006

Matchcom_15ASSOCIATED PRESS — Mar 15 — The main reason more mature singles are going online for love is simple: more widespread access to the Internet, hence more familiarity with online dating. And dating sites are catering to older members. Yahoo Personals, for example, has an advice column for users over 50.  Another reason: "Baby boomers are seeing their children use online dating, and watching their success at finding mates," says Rochelle Adams, spokesperson for Yahoo Personals. Match.com says boomers (age 45-59) are its fastest growing segment — they've increased by 350 percent since 2000, now numbering 1.7 million. Spokesperson Kristin Kelly says older users tend to be much clearer and more realistic about what they want: "There's no substitute for the wisdom gained with age."  FULL ARTICLE @ TMC NET

Celebrities Dabble in Online Dating

Posted on March 15, 2006

Joan_riversFOX NEWS — Mar 13 — Stars like Joan Rivers and Halle Berry have confessed to checking out online dating sites – and Rivers even posted an ad on Match.com.  "I love smart men, funny men, elegant men," Rivers’ profile reads. "If I had to choose between Brad Pitt stripped to the waist or an old George Clooney in a dinner jacket, George would win hands down." Rivers admitted to Howard Stern last month that she placed the Match.com ad.  Beautiful Oscar-winner Halle Berry has admitted to spending a lot of time in chat rooms, and dabbling with dating sites.  FULL ARTICLE @ FOX NEWS

Looking for Your Type?

Posted on March 7, 2006

Looking_for_your_typeLOS ANGELES TIMES — Mar 4 — As novel as Datemypet.com seems, the year-and-a-half-old site is part of a larger niche site trend: truckerpassions.com, tallfriends.com, friendslikeme.org, gothicloveonline.com, conservativematch.com, hiphopmatchmaker.com, rightstuffdating.com, grapedates.com, sugardaddie.com, veggiedate.com. There wasn't a market for most niches until online dating as a whole had reached a critical mass of users and acceptability, and that's only happened within the last few years. According to JupiterResearch, 14% of American Internet users browsed personal ads in 2005. In 2006, that figure is expected to increase to 16%.  Match.com, Yahoo! Personals and eHarmony are the top three players in the market and account for 50%+ of all online dating traffic.

Mark Brooks: Community Connect (Blackplanet.com, Asianavenue.com, Migente.com), Friendfinder, and Spark are the niche dating leaders in terms of overall revenues.

Online Dating Subscription Fees

Posted on March 7, 2006

Eharmony_6I-NEWSWIRE — Mar 2 — Some people argue that charging people $50 a month is too much. I say it's not enough. People use price as a filter. That's why matchmakers charge $5,000.  At Chemistry and Eharmony, the value is not only the enhanced matching algorithm, you're paying more so you don't have to spend hours each week looking at profiles. Paying more to do less.  Myspace is the exact opposite. Match had a $500 service at one point, I think it lasted about 3 months.

The full article was originally published at i-Newswire, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: The online dating world can learn from the real world matchmakers.  We're leaving money on the table.  Many people just don't have the time to invest in online dating (or real world dating).  They will gladly pay $2000+ a year for the end result of being set up on dates with compatible singles every week or two.

$43.98 to Find a Date? How’s That Working For You?

Posted on March 6, 2006

MindfindbindCOURIER POST ONLINE — Feb 21 — Dr. Phil charged me $43.98 for a month of Match.com with his service, "MindFindBind." He has been telling America how to fall in love since the ’90s, and it’s getting annoying already. Many dating companies are incorporating advice into their sites. EHarmony.com, has a marriage counseling program because "every marriage can benefit from a tuneup." For a jaw-dropping $239, couples get a 60-page marriage profile with 12 20-minute exercises.  On Match.com, Dr. Phil delivers his "MindFindBind" advice in audio and video clips, organized like a step-by-step, self-help program. After signing up, every day new "activities" popped up on my "to-do" list. He wants America to be mentally and emotionally prepared for love.

‘Adult’ Dating Sites Flourish

Posted on March 3, 2006

Adultfriendfinder_1WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE — Mar 1 — Amid sluggish growth for dating Web sites, a different kind of matchmaking service is thriving online: so-called adult dating sites that dispense with courtship and urge members to head straight for the bedroom. With names like AdultFriendFinder.com, SexSearch.com and IWantU.com, adult dating sites purport to help users find one-night stands, swinger parties and other sexual escapades. "We enable someone to express themselves sexually in a place that doesn't make them feel dirty," said Andrew Conru, FriendFinder founder. He estimated that about half of his site's members are "actively seeking a sexual partner." Others take advantage of features such as chat rooms and blogs. Others are merely interested in being a "voyeur into other people's lifestyles." AdultFriendFinder's traffic rose 67% in January from a year earlier, according to Nielsen. SexSearch.com, the second-most visited adult dating site, tripled its traffic to 3.2 million unique visitors in January while running online advertisements that promise "real people, real sex." Nielsen said traffic to InterActiveCorp.'s Match.com, the most popular of the traditional dating sites it tracks, grew 7% to 4.5 million unique visitors over the same period. Holly Fabian, 40, of Warren, MI, joined AdultFriendFinder "as a joke" to browse the amusing content. She received 150 emails in 24 hours and discovered a man who shared her interests.  They met for dinner, and have been dating for the past two years.

Mark Brooks: It's a rarity that the press write about the casual dating sites, much less Wall Street Journal.
