Match Group and Betches Partner for a New Dating App “Ship”

Posted on January 23, 2019

Ship dating appTHE VERGE – Jan 22 – Match Group and the media brand Betches are partnering to launch an iOS dating app that allows users to help their friends pick out potential dates. The app is called Ship, and it lets users swipe for their friends and chat about profiles in a group chat within the app. Match supplies the tech expertise for Ship while Betches provides the branding, marketing, and bigger idea. Betches started as a website and is now a viral social media and digital humor company with ~6M Instagram followers and ~3M monthly unique visitors. Match is likely leveraging that built-in group to see if they can serve as a pool of daters from the onset. For now, there isn't a revenue model for Ship, although that'll probably change, assuming it attracts enough people to be successful.

IAC, Match Sue Tinder co-Founder Sean Rad

Posted on January 17, 2019

Lawsuit threatSEEKING ALPHA – Jan 16 – IAC and Match Group sue Tinder co-founder Sean Rad for theft of company files and other proprietary information. Six months ago, Rad and other Tinder co-founders sued IAC for allegedly undervaluing Tinder to limit the earnings from exercising stock options. The suit claims at least $250M in damages. IAC/Match say Rad created backups of internal emails, forwarded company emails to his personal account, and directly copied files with sensitive material. Rad's lawyer says his employee contract allowed him to back up his email and calls the suit a "desperate act of retaliation."

10 Years Ago, Match.com Was Dying, According to Markus Frind

Posted on January 3, 2019

Blast from the past postOPW 'BLAST FROM THE PAST' – Jan 3 – This month, 10 years ago, Match.com launched a free dating site DownToEarth as an answer to ever growing threat from Markus Frind's free dating site – PlentyOfFish. DownToEarth only lasted 10 months when Match.com decided to relaunch it as Stir.com, a service that would recommend the best places to go and meet like-minded people. Mandy Ginsberg, back then GM of Match.com, commented: "It became obvious that DownToEarth resonated with 18-25 years old. Based on feedback, we are evolving the site experience to be more relevant for that audience which includes suggestions for places to hang out as well as people to go there with." Match needed to create a product to draw in and warm up a new generation of Match.com users. Stir seemed like a good idea at that time but little did they know that the real game changer (Tinder) was yet to come. In the meantime, money kept on rolling in for PlentyOfFish.com. The site was bringing in $10M annual revenue with 50% profit. "Yahoo is a complete joke, Google is a cult, and Match is dying," said Frind in an interview with INC. in January 2009. Fast forward 10 years, Match Group is an $11B dating empire which owns 50+ dating brands including PlentyOfFish which Frind sold to Match for $575M in cash in 2015. Meanwhile, Markus Frind, happy to keep every single penny from the POF sale, is venturing into the wine business by opening Frind Estate Winery in West Kelowna, Canada. So what will the online dating world look like in another 10 years? Your comments please…

Judge Swipes Right on Tinder App Patents

Posted on December 22, 2018

Lawsuit pic 2017LAW.COM – Dec 20 – U.S. District Judge Alan Albright ruled Tinder's interface is eligible for patenting, moving Match Group's suit against rival Bumble one step forward. The judge turned away Bumble's claim that two patents owned by Match Group are ineligible for patenting under Section 101 of the Patent Act. Bumble had argued the patents are directed to the abstract concepts of matchmaking and picking cards out of a stack. He also turned away Bumble's motion to dismiss Match's trade secret claims, saying it was too early in the case to rule on them.

The CEO Behind Tinder, OkCupid on the Future of Online Dating

Posted on December 22, 2018

Match Group Mandy Ginsberg dec 2018WALL STREET JOURNAL – Dec 20 – Match Group CEO Mandy Ginsberg talks about her first year on the job, the Facebook threat and tackling loneliness through technology.

Q: Are you losing a lot of sleep over the Facebook move?
A: There are a lot of other things that make me lose sleep. I worry: "Are we innovating enough? Do we have the right talent?" You can't underestimate Facebook, but I do feel confident that, with Tinder, people who are 21 years old are not going to be like, "Oh, I'm going to get rid of my Tinder app in order to use Facebook."

Q: Who isn't using your apps today, and where do you see the greatest potential?
A: The biggest opportunity is outside of the U.S. and Western Europe.

Q: How have your products changed in the #MeToo era?
A: When I started this year, I thought hard about what else should we do. I kicked off a safety advisory council. Tarana Burke, who founded the #MeToo movement, is on it.

Q: Match Group is ~80%-owned by Barry Diller's IAC. What advice has he given you?
A: He's a very instinctive decision-maker. He likes to get to the heart of a problem, and he pushes individuals and the team to get there. It's more about the dialogue and the discussion.

Q: What's the best career advice you ever received?
A: My mother, growing up, said, "If you want something, open up your mouth and ask."

Q: What will Match look like in 2025?
A: Despite so much technology, people are more disconnected than ever. It's really important that products like ours are all about human connections and connecting people one on one. Video is going to play a role.

Tinder Fires Comms Head and Other Employees Who Sued Match Group

Posted on December 19, 2018

Tinder rosette pambakianTECH CRUNCH – Dec 19 – Tinder has fired its VP of marketing and communications Rosette Pambakian, as well as other employees who sued Tinder's parent company Match Group and IAC earlier this year. In an email sent to Match Group's current CEO Mandy Ginsberg, Pambakian said that after being placed on leave when the lawsuit was filed, she was subjected to "ongoing intimidation and retaliation clearly designed to pressure me into resigning." Pambakian also said that after she declined to sign a non-disparagement agreement, "Match snuck an arbitration clause into its employees' most recent compliance acknowledgements, causing me, Jonathan, James and Josh to have to withdraw from the lawsuit. As a woman CEO, I truly hope that you reconsider the safety of your remaining female workforce and allow Tinder and other Match owned companies to follow in the footsteps of Uber, Facebook and Google in eliminating forced arbitration for sexual misconduct claims. We deserve better." In response, Ginsberg denied that Pambakian was fired for complaining about sexual harassment: "You couldn't have been, as you never reported Greg for sexual harassment. You were terminated because it was not possible for you to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of your role as Tinder's spokesperson for a number of reasons, including your public position against the company over a valuation process," Ginsberg continued.

Special Match Stock Dividend Could Fuel IAC’s Acquisition

Posted on December 13, 2018

Match group logo jan 2017INVESTORS – Dec 12 – Owners of Match Group stock may have wondered why the company announced a special dividend in October. IAC could be stockpiling cash for a major acquisition, says Brent Thill, analyst at Jefferies. IAC, which owns 80% of Match, took in $440M of the $560M special dividend, analysts say. “With an ~$3B in cash by year-end 2019 and a history of utilizing cash and stock in past deals, IAC has the capacity for larger-scale M&A.,” Thill said in a report published on Wednesday. “CEO Joey Levin recently stated in an interview that he believes IAC can digest close to a $5B deal.”
