The Rise of Borderless Dating

Posted on February 16, 2021

Tinder passportQUARTZ – Feb 16 – In the early days of the pandemic, Tinder users started teleporting themselves into other countries. The feature, normally available with Tinder's paid subscriptions, was so popular that the company made it free for everyone for a month. Bumble followed suit, giving users the option to set their location filters "nationwide". Location has started mattering less. Nicole Parlapiano, VP of marketing for North America at Tinder, also says that Gen Z has a more relaxed, open approach to dating. "I think the world's getting smaller. What matters is good interaction, good conversation. And you can jump on a plane, you can get in a car," said Geoff Cook, CEO of The Meet Group, which owns streaming app MeetMe. OkCupid said in a blog post that since the start of the pandemic "connections and conversations across borders are up 50%, and people are setting their location preferences to 'anywhere' more than ever before.” ~1.5M users say they are open to a long-distance relationship. Dating coach and industry consultant Steve Dean said his clients have been more willing to widen their geographical perimeter during the pandemic. Eric Resnick, longtime online dating coach and industry consultant, is skeptical. "He wonders, how do you navigate a new online relationship? Are you exclusive, or do you also date locally?" "There's potential for it, but I think it's inherently risky," he said. "Nothing's real until you're in the same room at the same time as someone."

Mark Brooks Joins Anna Faris on Her Podcast “Unqualified”

Posted on October 3, 2020

OPW – Oct 3 – Unqualified is created and hosted by actress Anna Faris. The podcast consists of interviews with celebrities, followed by phone-calls to listeners asking for relationships and other advice. In this episode, Anna interviews actor Adam DeVine (Workaholicsm, Modern Family) to talk about the dangers of filming his new show Bad Ideas. Later, Anna is joined by online dating expert Mark Brooks to answer questions about online dating.

Anna: How do you truly get to know somebody online?
Mark: Dating apps are a great way to get the tough questions out of the way right up front. Dating takes practise, you gotta know what some of the rules are.

Anna: How can you find safety in the online dating world?
Mark: There is some reality of Internet dating which is very important to understand – people fib, usually about age, height and weight. Some of the dating platforms offer background checks and authentication. That's where the industry is going next. Online daters should also use video to get a better sense of people.

Anna: What is this fear of meeting in real life?
Mark: The best antidote is to go out on 20 dates (video dates these days… ) you will get a sense of yourself and the other person, and build up the skills of dating.

Anna: What dating apps would you recommend?
Mark: There is a way to help people warm up to video dating. I recommend checking out MeetMe. You don't even need to do a video date. You can watch other people video-date. It's fun to watch and you can give them advice and then vote if you think the couple should take it further.

The Meet Group Launches Face Verification

Posted on September 22, 2020

Meetme verified profileBUSINESSWIRE – Sep 21 – The Meet Group rolls out AI-powered face verification using FaceTec's 3D selfie technology, a human liveness check. Verification badges roll out to MeetMe member profiles this week, then Skout and Tagged within months. FaceTec's AI software confirms the user is physically present in front of the camera. As badge adoption increases, it will become a prerequisite for certain activities like sending photos in chat. Additionally, FaceTec's AI provides a 3D age estimation.

"At the beginning of this year, I set forth our commitment to safer dating in 2020, addressing key issues affecting dating apps everywhere: Authenticity, Age Estimation, Device Blocking, and Textual Screening," said Geoff Cook, CEO of The Meet Group. "With the launch of the Profile Verification Badge on MeetMe, we are…helping to ensure authenticity and end catfishing."

Other initiatives include using URSafe so members can stay connected in an emergency, collaborating with Microsoft on Project Artemis which uses common textual patterns and an age detection engine to prevent child exploitation, the introduction of a Safer Dating Advisory Board of epidemiologists and infectious disease experts to provide advice aimed at reducing the risk of contagion while dating, and implementing DeviceCheck to block bad actors' devices. Mark Brooks: Geoff Cook, CEO of The Meet Group, made a couple of impactful statements in the BBC video interview.  Geoff said, "I certainly believe daters no longer have the risk appetite for meeting many different people in person based on something as shallow as a right swipe." This risk, of course, is heightened right now because of covid.  However, there's always been additional risks when daters meet in-person for the first time. Especially the risk of disappointment when people have misrepresented themselves in their dating profile and photos. The best thing about video is, video doesn't lie, so when people meet in-person, they're less likely to be disappointed, or catfished. Geoff also stated "…Live-streaming video helps…by really emphasizing personalities" which I think is why this new video dating norm will be here to stay. It's so tough for dating apps to really help people get a sense of chemistry.  But with video, users can actually get their first sense of chemistry. That's huge!
