Downturn Dating

Posted on July 3, 2009

Dating bar scene ASSOCIATED PRESS — July 2 —  Some singles are now hunting for dates with the same fervour others are showing hunting for jobs. Membership on eHarmony is up 20% despite monthly fees of up to $60, and activity has soared 50% since September at OkCupid.com. “People are looking for something that’s genuine in a world that isn’t very secure,” said Bathsheba Birman, co-founder of the Chicago dating event Nerds at Heart. Attendance at the monthly gatherings, where mostly young professionals pay $25 for a drink and a chance to spend the evening clustered around trivia and board games — was more than double expectations in April and has stayed high since.

OKCupid Downtime

Posted on May 29, 2009

Okcupid logo aktualni OPW — May 29 — OKCupid went down tonight. I thought you might get a kick out of their online message on the site:

"So…We thought it would be cool to get a cat for the office, but we needed a litter box, and there wasn't really room in the bathroom, so we put it next to these servers in the back, and everything would have been fine, but the A/C repair guy was allergic and the cat reacts badly to loud noises and there were all these wires hanging back there and a bunch of surprisingly flammable packing material…

Erik thought it would be JUST AWESOME to put a paperclip on the end of a rubber band and shoot it at Vinay's eye, and it would have just been Erik and Vinay's problem except Vinay had a cup of coffee and was standing over James, who was fixing our router at the time…

Anyway, we'll have things back up soon. Sorry for the inconvenience. – Worker"

OKCupid’s Marketing Strategy

Posted on May 5, 2009

Okcupidnew logo INC — May 5 — Sam Yagan, the founder of OkCupid, creates a blind-dating service to get press attention and create buzz. At first, CrazyBlindDate created virtually no buzz, but after it launched in New York City, Boston, and San Francisco, the site began to garner attention from the press. In turn, by early 2008, OkCupid had doubled its monthly users to ~2m. OkCupid fell short of its revenue goal of $2m in 2008, but Yagan says the number of active daters has nearly doubled, to ~1m, and monthly unique visitors have increased more than 50%, to 3.2m. Love In The Time Of Recession

Posted on April 21, 2009

YoungHappyCouple YAHOO! NEWS — April 20 — The $60 billion-a-year wedding industry is hurting as much as the rest of the economy, according to a recent Bloomberg article. And with couples spending an average of 24% less on tying the knot than in '07, they are scaling back on everything from the number of guests to meal selections to flowers. According to a recent article in Yahoo! Finance, 37% of matrimonial lawyers report seeing a decrease in divorcing couples during economic downturns. The reason, the article posits, is because getting a divorce is the "worst thing you can do financially." So maybe the frugal thing to do these days is just stay single? Not so fast. The Economist and CNN are both reporting that matchmakers and online dating websites like eHarmony.com and OKCupid.com are prospering during the recession. eHarmony reports a 20% increase in monthly registrations from September 2008 to January 2009, and even Harlequin Enterprises, the world's leading publisher of romance fiction, reported that fourth-quarter earnings were up 32% over the same period the year before. Love is in the air, in one form or another.

When Times Get Tough, People Want Love

Posted on March 10, 2009

TODAY SHOW – Mar 9 — When the stocks fall more people look for love
online. At Match.com memberships grew 17% in December alone. eHarmony
saw a 20% spike since September and Sam Yagan, the CEO of OKCupid.com
said  “Around September when the economy really started to melt down,
our members started to spend more time on the site and they started to
get more serious about their search to find that special someone.”  A
survey by eHarmony found that 25% of women and 19% of men were more
interested in being in a long term relationship as a result of the
current economy. SEE FULL TRANSCRIPT

Blind Date With Recession

Posted on February 13, 2009
Online dating - couple with laptops FINANCIAL TIMES — Feb 12 — While the build-up to Feb 14 may be a busy time for the on line dating industry, the "crunch time" this year, says Mark Brooks, president of the Internet Dating Executive Alliance, will be when the red roses have wilted. "It's then, when subscriptions typically tail off, that we'll see if the industry will be able to withstand the recession.

Some are tempted by free online dating sites. In 2006, 8% of traffic to online dating services went to free sites. By 2008 this had reached 24%, according to Hitwise. "A dating site might well be one of the things you cut back on if there are free sites on offer", said Sam Yagan, CEO of OKCupid. Mr Brooks disagrees: "At the end of the day $20 a month isn't that much to spend. People can rationalise it by saying that it's cheaper than going out for a night out and wasting much more and not meeting anyone."

Ross Williams, CEO of Global Personals, believes members will not cut back. "You get what you pay for," says Mr Williams. "Users don't want a free-for-all. They want to know that their potential dates are serious about relationships."

15 Questions With Sam Yagan

Posted on February 13, 2009
Sam yagan THE HARVARD CRIMSON — Feb 11 – Sam A. Yagan and the other founders of SparkNotes have struck gold again with OkCupid.com, an online dating site for the younger set.

Q: How did you transition from SparkNotes into the world of online dating sites?
A: The only three things people were paying for online were porno, gambling, and dating. We thought that dating would be a great venue for excitement, and we could definitely come up with a better Web site than Match.com. We made it really fun, and free.

Q: Did you create OkCupid to find some romance for yourself?
A: We were all married, but our employees definitely use it a lot.

Q: How can you afford to do a free dating site?
A: We have 15 employees, while Match.com has about 300. Although we have a fraction of their workers we have an equally good Web site.

Q: How successful is your Web site in relation to other Web sites?
A: We've gotten to be almost as big as Match.com.

10 Things Online Dating Services Won’t Say

Posted on February 9, 2009

10thingsdatingserviceswontsay SMART MONEY — Feb 9 –
1. Keep your hopes high and your expectations low.

2. We've yet to meet two people who aren't a potential match.  "No one knows if (personality profiling datin services) actually work," says author Robert Epstein. If you really want individualized matchmaking then consider a personal matchmaker.

3. Everyone's lying about something. Some users lie about their age to show up in more search results but most lies in the online dating universe are pretty small, says Nicole Ellison, an assistant professor at Michigan State.

4. We don't have as many members as it seems. Experts say that at best, subscriber services convert ~ 10 and 15% of browsers into members. That means 90% or more of the profiles at a subscriber site could belong to unreachable browsers. On free sites like Plentyoffish.com or OKCupid.com every profile belongs to an active member.

5. Fall in love too quickly and you could end up with an empty wallet. "The romance scam is the most prevalent on dating sites, and the hardest to stop", says Brian Erickson, director of operations at Mate1.com.

6. Our guarantees are only guaranteed to keep you here. Match.com and Yahoo Personals offer "guarantees" and six-month "promises". If you don't find the one during your six-month subscription, you'll get more time to keep trying. Dating sites do this because it's an easy, low-cost way to keep traffic up—and a great marketing tool, says David Evans, an industry consultant.

7. Don't expect quick results. "You can't just throw up a profile and expect to go on a date," says Mark Brooks, an industry consultant for online dating services. The world of online dating has its own rhythms and rituals, which often take some time. Keep that first date light. "You're going to know by the second sip of your latte if there's something there," says Trish McDermott, VP Love at Engage.com.

8. Once you log in, you're pretty much on your own. Some people could simply use more help than others, says Mark Brooks, but good luck getting it from the dating service you're using. "Online dating sites' biggest flaw is they don't offer service of any kind," he says. Rather, most of them function more like a giant virtual bar or nightclub.

9. You might not need all these extras—but we do. "Besides the overall dampening of consumer spending, the Internet dating market has simply become saturated", says Brooks. That means online dating services have had to start getting creative.

10. Good luck trying to break up with us.

OkCupid Attracts Young People

Posted on February 9, 2009

Okcupidnew logo THE SPECTATOR — Feb 9 — CEO Sam Yagan said Okcupid secures the youngest demographics of all the online dating for three reasons. First, he said, is because OkCupid is free. Yagan also thinks college students are attracted to the site because of the creators. OkCupid was made by the same makers of thespark and sparknotes.com, a site that, until it was shut down, had been popular with students. After sparknotes.com was shut down, much of the site's fan base transferred to OkCupid. The third reason is that the service is similar to other online social networks, rather than really pushing dating.
