Group Dating Takes Off in China

Posted on August 30, 2006

Asian_dating_2BBC NEWS — Aug 28 — Group dating events, which draw hundreds of single men and women, have climbed in popularity since they were introduced in Chinese cities. One event in Zhejiang in April attracted 12,658 participants, Xinhua news agency said, while 10,000 showed up for another in Shanghai. Cities are full of young workers, but singletons who spend long hours at the office end up with no time to meet other people, said Wu Xiuping of the Beijing Municipal Women's Federation. The federation has been organizing sessions in the capital for three years. At the dating events, men and women are put into groups to get to know each other and, if they want to, can swap telephone numbers at the end. Ms Wu said group dating was particularly popular with women. FULL ARTICLE @ BBC

Mark Brooks: I visited China for the Asian internet dating convention in May this year. The city was dotted with building cranes and in some areas on the outskirts the entire skyline was lined with tall building cranes manically erecting the new Beijing 'burbs. I had a very pleasant girl chat me up on a bus. She went so far as to request that I call her. Times are changing in China. Internet dating is hot, but the challenges are significant. It's rather like going back in time to the late '90's, only in China, there's the prospect of reaching a billion people. Sites like Baihe.com and Yeeyoo.com are growing fast. How fast?  I'll see if I can get some ranking numbers from iresearch.

Social Network Sites Face US Ban

Posted on August 1, 2006

ChildrenBBC NEWS — July 31 — Many schools have already banned social network sites. The Deleting Online Predators Act tries to limit the access paedophiles have to social networking sites primarily at schools and libraries. The act has already been approved by a large majority in the House of Representatives on 26 July. Critics say the act is too broad and could mean a huge number of websites are cut off from users.  MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, Friendster and many others count large numbers of children among their users. The DOPA Act leaves the final definition of what counts as a social networking site to the FCC.  Some MySpace users have created an online 'Save your Space' petition and aims to gather more than one million signatures in a month. FULL ARTICLE @ BBC NEWS

Mark Brooks: Too little, too late. MySpace has been laying low on this subject. Looks like the 'head in the sand' approach didn't work. Constant press attention has morphed into political attention and now into legislation that looks like it will pass. I was surprised the new MySpace Chief Safety Officer didn't show up at the recent San Francisco Internet Dating Convention that was focused on background checks and safety. This bill is getting ramrodded through to the Senate and is a political hot potato.  Child safety…who's going to vote against that? What repercussions will the rest of the online personals industry need to deal with in the coming years? Online personals safety is now front forward and on the minds of a lot of politicians. I can see this political attention manifesting. The State Attorney Generals will be on the prowl next. DOPA will be useful only in the short term (3-5 years). Kids use cell phones. Cell phones have internet access. Will cell phones be blocked next? Hey, check out helio.com for MySpace enabled sexy cell phones. MySpace has already circumnavigated school and library computers. FULL TEXT OF BILL

Posted on July 4, 2006

Ceop2BBC NEWS — July 4 — The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) will run a series of workshops in UK for parents, children and teachers. Ceop said it was concerned that children were posting personal details and said one in 12 children met up with someone encountered first online. 54% of Bebo UK users are under 18, 31% of MySpace UK users are under 18. Wi-fi set to Re-Wire Social Rules

Posted on March 10, 2006

Wifi_to_rewire_social_rulesBBC NEWS — Mar — In some British cities, plans are advancing to set up so many hotspots that entire neighbourhoods become wi-fi enabled. One of the biggest will be in London's Square Mile; it will give more than 350,000 workers always-on access to the net. Dr Jo Twist, senior research fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research, said once the net is ubiquitous like power and water, it has the potential to be "transformative". The divide that separates people from their online lives will utterly disappear. Restaurant reviews could be tagged to buildings. "If we have a ubiquitous, cheap or free wireless network that our portable and mobile devices can access, therefore skipping the need for a pricey PC, then that could be incredibly empowering for lots of people. It could be really empowering and it could help encourage innovative uses of that network which enliven our public spaces as well as our networks with each other," said Dr Twist.  FULL ARTICLE @ BBC NEWS

Mark Brooks: As I said at the mobile dating convention…we're going to go 'Star Trek' eventually.  Ubiquitous connections with talking PDA pads complete with voice recognition.  I'd give it ten years.  What will online dating look like in 7-10 years?  Your comments please.  I'll start the ball rolling on this one…

Posted on February 16, 2006

Study_of_speeddatingBBC NEWS — Feb 15 — Scientists are planning to stage a mass speed dating experiment to discover whether opposites really do attract. They are seeking 200 people to take part in the event, which will be part of this year's Edinburgh International Science Festival in April. The study is being carried out under Professor Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire.  FULL ARTICLE @ BBC NEWS

Love on the Web

Posted on February 6, 2006

LoveonthewebBBC NEWS — Feb 2 — There are 12 million unattached people in Britain. Since the 1960s, the number of people with no-one to go home to has quadrupled. Two thirds of single people looking for love have signed up to dating agencies. Nate Elliot, an analyst with JupiterResearch explains "the sites give people an opportunity to see a lot of other singles in an environment that's very comfortable for them. "There's not a lot of risk and there's not a lot of stress involved in browsing profiles from home." Upmarket conventional agencies are riding high too. Far from being wiped out by the web the internet's actually brought dating into people's homes and it's taken away a lot of the taboo.  Offline agencies cater to a much more select clientele.  FULL ARTICLE @ BBC NEWS

Mark Brooks: Great Expectations, Together Dating/The Right One and It's Just Lunch are the biggest national matchmaking organizations in Great Britain.

Lonely Kenyan Singletons

Posted on January 24, 2006

Lovepotcom_1BBC NEWS — Jan 24 — Many young urban Kenyans are finding it hard to meet a partner because of changing lifestyles. "We never used to approach men, we waited at home. They were able to identify a good girl and then finally in that situation you waited to be asked to be married." For Claire, the modern way of meeting her man has so far failed. Craigslist: ‘Seeking human connection’

Posted on January 15, 2006

Craig_newmarkBBC NEWS — Jan 13 — Craigslist now has "well over three billion page views" per month Craig says, which makes it the seventh biggest presence on the internet. His almost anti-profit business employs just 19 people, and is still based in a San Francisco living room. Craigslist is a real and reciprocal online community that is "just trying to give people a break" across the 190 cities it serves. Craigslist  nets around $20m a year by charging for job postings in three cities. eBay managed to buy 25% of the company in 2004, when a former employee unilaterally decided to sell his shares. Craig says the unexpected relationship has been beneficial so far. "We try to be driven by the values of the people who use us," he said. With a portion of each site given over to dating, "erotic services" and "casual encounters", it is not hard to see for example, why only Istanbul has joined the Craigslist ranks from the Islamic world. FULL ARTICLE @ BBC NEWS

Mark Brooks: Craigslist because looks and feels like a cool guy doing us all a favor.  It is!  I had lunch with Craig in 1999 and pitched an early version of Plaxo.  In 2000 he almost bit on a deal with Hypermatch a small online dating site I was working with…the only stipulations, we were not to make money from advertising or charge membership dues.  Um, then what?  It didn't happen and Hypermatch was sold to EZBoard.  Other companies I've advised have pitched Jim Buckmaster (CEO) and Craig since then, to no avail.  I've not bugged Craig for a while now.  The last time I saw Craig it was simply to buy him a cup of coffee and thank him for helping me grow my little club http://www.ace-club.com by relisting events on his events calendar.  Craigslist is a great site and public service.  The shear utility, utter integrity, humility and lack of commercial agenda is at the core of it's success.

Phone Technology Aids UAE Dating

Posted on August 8, 2005

Ahmed_bluetooth_userBBC NEWS — Jul 29 — Many of the Dubai's black-shrouded UAE girls say they cannot check out the latest fashions in Zara or sip a smoothie in a cafe without being bombarded with the phone numbers of hopeful admirers.  UAE population has increased roughly eightfold since 1975.  Traditionally, a young man's first amorous approach to a woman is supposed to be a marriage proposal made by his parents to her parents. Bluetooth is a feature built into some mobile phones which enables the user to transfer data to another wireless device nearby. But crucially, it also enables one person to contact another within a 10 metre radius without knowing their phone number.  Ahmed Bin Desmal's friends joke that he is a "Bluetooth king". The 20-year-old says he has used the technology to send notes to girls he sees in public places.  "In our country it's very rude to go up and talk to them," he says. "I sent some notes, they liked them – they took my number and they called me. I say nice things – I'm into poems." Saud, 22, met the girl he describes as his girlfriend two years ago on the internet, through instant messaging software. Although they talk on the phone, he has seen her only five or six times, by following her from a distance as she shops with her family in a mall. He says she's beautiful.  FULL ARTICLE @ BBC NEWS
