Baby Boomers Return To Dating

Posted on August 6, 2012

Gray divorceBOSTON GLOBE – Aug 5 – With so-called gray divorce on the rise, according to sociologists at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, a growing number of baby boomers are finding themselves back on the market. “When I was in my 30s, my biological clock was ticking,” says Rita Lombardi, a divorced Canton resident. This time around, a different clock is ticking. “It’s the rest of my life,” she says, “and I want to spend it with fun people. I don’t want to spend it alone.” Even though older daters say they know themselves better than they did when they were twentysomethings, they know the new rules less well. Although the overall divorce rate in the country remains essentially flat, the rate among those ages 50 and older has doubled since 1990, reports Susan Brown, a sociology professor at Bowling Green State University. “Remarriages are more likely to end in divorce than are first marriages, and the risk of divorce is greatest during the earliest years of marriage.” Other factors include: the rise in the number of working women; changing attitudes about marriage and divorce; and lengthening life expectancies.

What Scientists Are Learning From Online Dating

Posted on August 23, 2010

Okcupid logo aktualni BOSTON GLOBE – Aug 22 - OKCupid has begun publishing statistics about its users’ behavior on its blog OKTrends, and using the numbers to generate real-world advice. For example: Men get more responses from women if they don’t smile in their profile pictures and women are more likely than men to send messages to people they don’t find attractive. The blog has also uncovered some trends about lying: All users add an average of two inches to their height and a 20% raise in salary. OKCupid can also analyze user communications to see what works and what doesn’t. The word choices most likely to kill your chances of getting a reply are bad grammar and “netspeak,” like saying “ur” for “your.” Dan Ariely, a behavioral economist, used data from a different website to analyze which attributes determine the success of men and women in getting responses from the opposite sex. For both sexes, the attractiveness of the photo was the most important trait. Beyond that, men’s height was the most important feature to women. FULL ARTICLE @ BOSTON GLOBE

Real Business: Selling Virtual Goods

Posted on November 9, 2009

Virtual goods picture BOSTON GLOBE – Nov 8 - Virtual worlds have been generating lots of buzz since Second Life launched in 2003 and is expected to hit $1 billion in the US. Pano Anthos flew out to San Francisco to unveil his new start-up, Hangout Industries, at TechCrunch50. Hangout intended to attract young Internet users and allow them to deck out online rooms with all sorts of branded merchandise. This week, Hangout will be beginning a limited beta test of a new version of its product, and Viximo, a Cambridge start-up, says it’s on the verge of disclosing several big partnerships. Viximo helps website operators add virtual goods to their sites. On a dating site one single might pay $6 or $12 to send another an animation of “two peas in a pod dancing around with music,’’ CEO Dayna Grayson explains. Viximo has established a network of artists who constantly create new virtual goods, and then distributes them to sites like BlackSingles.com and Zorpia, a social network based in Australia. Dating From The Dorm Room

Posted on June 24, 2009

Online_dating BOSTON GLOBE — June 24 – In 2007, eHarmony lowered the minimum age for completing its membership questionnaire from 21 to 18. Mark Brooks, who runs a consulting firm for online dating sites, said interest in online dating among young people has increased over the past few years. “These youngsters started on social networks; they warmed up on Friendster, they drifted to MySpace, then Facebook,’’ he said. “They are used to having a world of choice under their fingertips, and they are more demanding of a good match. And so, according to Brooks, today’s 18-to-22-year-olds are far more likely to look for love online than previous generations were. Most dating sites like eHarmony, Match.com, and the Jewish dating site JDate accept members 18 and older. Others like Universityloveconnection.com and Campushook.com are restricted to people enrolled in school; Studentlove.com requires users to have a “.edu’’ e-mail address to sign up. The Myth Of Ashton Kutcher

Posted on March 25, 2009

Kutcher_moore BOSTON GLOBE — Mar 25 — Despite all the talk of cougar culture, men still want to date younger women. Men still seek younger women, especially as those men get older themselves. "It's the general rule," said Mark Brooks, an online dating industry consultant who runs Online Personals Watch. "With men dating women, it tends to be up to six years younger but it will only be up to two years older. Guys tend to have unrealistic expectations," said Brooks, who bragged that he is one of the mythical Ashton Kutcher-types (he recently dated someone nine years older than him). "Most men are too busy looking at magazines and not busy enough looking in the mirror." Adele Testani, founder of Hurrydate said "we have actually tried to capitalize on the cougar trend and it didn't really work for us. People really want that more traditional arrangement." Kate Bilenki, a spokeswoman for Plentyoffish.com, has not seen a male profile call for an older woman. "For every 55-year old male, there are three 55-year-old women", she adds. FULL ARTICLE @ BOSTON GLOBE

Mark Brooks: Photoshopped pictures of skinny models in magazines are destroying our society.  How can singles photos on dating sites compare to these unrealistic, unnatural photos?  A hundred years ago it was the women of girth and curves that were lauded after.  'Women of the street' were skinny and most available to men and became personifications of sexual desire over the years.  Sex sells.  Sex became connected with skinny, and now we have a generation of kids trying to reach unattainable and unnatural levels of skinny.  I'd love a six pack.  But why?  I've been brainwashed into thinking its sexy.  Just as women have been brainwashed into thinking super skinny is THE look.  Its not good for the dating  industry ultimately.  Singles should feel more comfortable posting their photos on dating sites.  Your comments please.

Matchmakers In San Francisco

Posted on March 4, 2008

Checkmates_logo SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE — Mar 2 — People in one of the most wired regions of the country are turning to an age-old method to find partners: professional matchmaking. Marsha Winer runs 'Introductions by Marsha', a 24-year-old matchmaking company. She has matched 1,500+ people. Members pay $2k/year for six introductions. Melinda Maximova is the founder of Perfect Search, a firm that helps high-earning men find serious relationships and charges $5,500 a year. While traditional matchmakers tend to pair paying clients with each other, with Perfect Search, only the men pay a fee. Jill and Amber Kelleher run 'Kelleher and Associates'. Packages start at $6,500 for a year. $25k buys membership to the dozen branches, and $45k, a nationwide search. At $100k, members work personally with a co-owner and get 40% of their money back if they are unsatisfied. And for $150k, the co-owners will conduct an international search. Carole Shattil founded Check Mates Inc 16 years ago. Prices start at $2,500 for a trial membership, $5k for 18 months of local introductions and $10k for two years of local and Los Angeles pairings. Mark Brooks: The internet dating industry is leaving money on the table! Here's the best way for your dating service to make money from matchmakers… Create a special 'matchmakers membership'. Bands get a special membership on MySpace. Headhunters get a special membership on Monster.com. Matchmakers should get a special membership on dating sites. Charge matchmakers $2k a year to set up their clients profiles, access your database, see who is 'really' active and likely to respond, and send priority messages to them. Let me know if you do this.

Dates On Demand

Posted on January 15, 2008

Crazyblinddate_logo BOSTON GLOBE — Jan 15 — We are in an era when you can get anything as soon as you want it, including soul mates. A new online dating service, called Crazy Blind Date, invites users to sign up for same-day service, matching them with dates in a matter of hours. Unlike most Internet dating services, Crazy Blind Date is about immediacy, not compatibility. Users register on the site and list the times and places they want to meet a date. Once a user submits a request, Crazy Blind Date arranges a meeting. Within a few hours, users are e-mailed the specifics of their date: a place, a time, and – for dramatic effect – a blurred photo of the other person. As of now, the service – which is free – operates in Boston, New York, San Francisco, and Austin, Texas. FULL ARTICLE @ BOSTON GLOBE

I Like The Way You Stink

Posted on December 10, 2007

Smatch THE BOSTON GLOBE — Dec 10 — ScientificMatch.com use DNA technology to match people by their natural odor. Body odor is a big part of romantic attraction, when one person finds the odor of another pleasing, it's a likely sign that the couple could share a "chemical attraction," ScientificMatch.com claims. The online service will charge $1,995.95 for a one-year membership, the fee includes background checks.

The full article was originally published at Boston.com, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: I recently took a 23andme.com DNA test and found out I have a low hereditary risk of heart disease, but a way high risk of getting Diabetes type 1. 23and me was founded by Google.com's founder's (Sergey Brin's) wife. With ScientificMatch.com's DNA test ($2k), users swab the inside of their cheeks for a DNA sample. With 23andme ($1k), I had to spit into a test tube and then mail it out.
