Star Apps: OKCupid co-Founder Christian Rudder

Posted on June 3, 2013

Okcupid christian rudderCNET NEWS – May 31 - Christian Rudder is a Harvard graduate who's helped launch and sell two successful companies – SparkNotes, in 1999, which sold to Barnes & Noble; OKCupid, in 2004, which sold to Match.com.

Q: What's so special about the OKCupid app?
A: It's a gateway from the OKCupid site to your phone.

Q: Talk to us about some of its best features.
A: We have location-based stuff. Compared to other dating apps, we have deeper profiles.

Q: Any thoughts on other, more hookup-based apps like Grindr, Tindr, and BangWithFriends?
A: Some people are looking for a quick hookup, some for someone to date, and some are looking to get married. OKCupid's app offers you the opportunity to find all of those things.

Q: How have mobile apps changed the online dating space?
A: The location-based factor. The goal of any dating site is for people to meet up in person, and this makes it a lot easier.

Q: How did OKCupid capture that much sought-after market?
A: Not intentionally. I think it's because we designed the product to be savvy and more cutting-edge.

Q: What software is involved in collecting data for the OKTrends blog?
A: MySQL, Excel, and Python.

OkCupid Experiment Proves Men Don’t Mind Dating Sociopaths

Posted on November 19, 2012

Okcupid profileCNET NEWS – Nov 18 – A woman's profile — full of obvious red flags — is put up on OkCupid. Within 6 hours, she received 39 messages from interested men and her profile was viewed more than 400 times. Do men just look at the pictures? You see, in their hearts men just don't care if their lady friend is erratic — even beyond the bounds of the law — as long as she's good-looking.

Analysis: eHarmony Had Several Password Security Fails

Posted on June 26, 2012

EHarmony pwds analysisCNET NEWS – June 26 – An analysis of passwords stolen from eHarmony and leaked to the Web recently reveals several problems with the way eHarmony handled password encryption and policies, according to a security expert. The biggest problem clearly was that the passwords, although encrypted and obscured with a hashing algorithm, were not "salted," which would have increased the amount of work password crackers would need to do, writes Mike Kelly, a security analyst at Trustwave SpiderLabs. 99.5% of the passwords did not contain a special character, but 57% contained letters and numbers. Also, the word "love" was the most commonly occurring password of those that were examined, the analysis found.

DOJ: Lying On Match.com Needs To Be A Crime

Posted on November 15, 2011

Department of justiceCNET NEWS – Nov 15 - The U.S. Department of Justice is defending computer hacking laws that make it a crime to use a fake name on Facebook or lie about your weight in an online dating profile. Rhe Justice Department argues that it must be able to prosecute violations of Web sites' often-ignored, always-unintelligible "terms of service" policies. The law in question, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, has been used by the Justice Department to prosecute a woman who used a fake MySpace account to verbally attack a 13-year old girl who then committed suicide.
