FAST COMPANY – Feb 19 – We spoke to successful women about their own regrets in their 20s. Here's advice from Amanda Bradford, CEO of The League. "GO TRAVEL AND EXPERIENCE THE WORLD." In her 20s Amanda was busy. By the time she reached 29 in 2014, she was building her now uber-successful dating app to a 1.5M person waitlist across 60 cities. Now 34, Bradford is happy with her success but she wishes she would have taken the advice of her former boss at Google who urged her to go see the world. "For me, global work experience and travel are key contributors to business and personal fulfillment. I wish I had invested more in global exposure during my 20s," she says. Now it's just too hard. I'm devoted to The League as the app expands into international cities. It would be helpful to have firsthand knowledge of each market and a network of people on the ground.

Q&A with Tinder CEO Elie Seidman about His Work Day
FAST COMPANY – Jan 8 – The Tinder CEO reveals his tips and tools for getting the most out of every day.
Q: What's your on switch?
A: Having kids has made me an early riser. My day begins at 5 a.m. I'll go to the gym and then I'll swim. Before heading into the office, I like to put together priorities for the day: the things that must be done today. Doing this ensures that my schedule doesn't control me, because I'm mindful of the big picture.
Q: What's your off switch?
A: Since I'm an early riser, I also tend to end the day on the early side. I love books and like to read fiction to wind down.
Q: What books are on your nightstand?
A: Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. This book is ultimately about the role of luck in life. The Score Takes Care of Itself: My Philosophy by Bill Walsh. This is, in my opinion, the best book on leadership by far. The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit: A Jewish Family's Exodus from Old Cairo to the New World by Lucette Lagnado. My mother grew up in France, but she was born in Egypt. This book is about the world her parents lived in.
Q: What classic product do you still use because you believe nobody's ever improved on it?
A: An analog IWC Big Pilot watch, the 1987 Toyota FJ60 Land Cruiser, the 1980s Mercedes 300 TD, a headphone amp with vacuum tubes and paper and pen. Nothing will ever improve upon it.
Slindir Is a Tinder for Healthy and Active Singles
FAST COMPANY – Dec 19 – "Active is our DNA, feeling good is our purpose," reads the app tagline. Slindir founder Andrea Miller explained the philosophy behind her company, noting that a common lifestyle was the best marker of a relationship's success. The more niche a dating app, the better and faster it helps members find what they're looking for. "Being active affects your vacation, the restaurants you eat at, it's going to affect you," said Miller, later adding, "It really has nothing to do with how you look, it's how it makes you feel." There is no fat-bashing or blatant elitism. Slindir promotes a healthy lifestyle, not a weight requirement. There is a difference.
AI Matchmaker, CoupleNet, Could Mine Twitter To Find A Perfect Match
FAST COMPANY – June 25 – A new deep learning algorithm called CoupleNet analyzes the tweets of two users and estimates how compatible the duo would be. To train the algorithm, the team behind CoupleNet created a dataset of ~2M tweets pulled from ~4,600 likely couples. The "couples" were found by identifying public accounts who sent messages like "good night baby love you :-*" to each other. After training, CoupleNet could identify real couples in the testing data better than other recommendation tools that were given the same data. The algorithm was able to spot what mutual interests between users it thought suggested a good match, like tweets about K-pop bands. But it's more than just word matching. CoupleNet could find pairs correctly even when there are no obvious matching signals.

Happn Is Launching In San Francisco
FAST COMPANY – July 5 – Happn is launching locally in San Francisco. The app is already live in New York City and a few other U.S. markets. In total, the app boasts 2.5M users worldwide. Like Tinder, Happn's functionality relies on users' location, but instead of surveying the surrounding neighborhood or city, it zooms in much more closely, to a 275-yard radius. The app's purpose is to help users "find the people they've crossed paths with." Happn offers users a form of digital flirtation called "charms." If users haven't matched up yet, they can send somebody a charm to get their attention. Every user gets 10 free charms. Once those are used up, they can purchase 10 more for $1.99.

Tinder Reengineers Its Gender Field
FAST COMPANY – Nov 15 – The latest Tinder update will feature a new, open-ended "gender" field on people's profiles. When identifying their gender, Tinder users can select from a long list of common non-binary gender identification terms or simply enter their own. Users will be able to determine whether or not to display their gender on their profiles or keep it private. The app will also include language aimed at educating users who may be unfamiliar with transgender issues.
Q&A With Tinder’s Sociologist
FAST COMPANY – Aug 3 – To understand its users, Tinder employs sociologist Jessica Carbino.
Q: Why does Tinder need a sociologist on staff?
A: We're trying to understand what individuals desire and how they behave.
Q: What's your day-to-day job like?
A: My job is to understand user behavior and then create a better experience for them.
Q: Tell me more about the user research Tinder does.
A: For example: 6 months ago I analyzed 12K photos of users. 72% of our users present themselves wearing very muted colors rather than a bold color. We can then advice them to wear bold colors if they want to stand out.
Q: Does the product work differently depending on where users are located?
A: The product that we have released now is relatively applicable across markets. We do test a lot.
Q: Do you analyze the text of people's profiles?
A: We haven't done that yet.
Q: How does Tinder use design to encourage civility?
A: Given that we're linked with Facebook, we show mutual friends in common. Individuals who have friends in common will have a higher degree of social accountability and will not act in a way that's inappropriate.
One Big Thing Tinder CEO Sean Rad Says Everyone Gets Wrong
FAST COMPANY – Jan 13 – "People think Tinder went public and I'm a billionaire," says CEO Sean Rad. "Add it to the long list of shit that's misunderstood about me." When Match Group announced its plan for IPO, many articles made it sound like Tinder itself was going public. The reality is that Match Group is the majority shareholder of Tinder. The Match Group IPO doesn't really impact us," Rad explains.
