When Harry ‘Online Dating’ Met Sally ‘Social Networking’

Posted on February 15, 2008

Engage_logo_2 INFORMATION WEEK — Feb 14 — Engage.com is two-years-old and has a pretty impressive lineup of executives, including co-founder and CEO Suneet Wadhwa, who came from Snapfish, and experts such as former Psychology Today Editor in Chief, Robert Epstein, and former Match.com maven Trish McDermott. Engage released a research entitled "The State of The Date." Most singles (68%) are interested in falling in love and getting married in the next five years. Only a few singles (12%) think bad romantic news should first be delivered electronically. McDermott said that Engage.com is now looking at ways of incorporating more Web 2.0 elements. The Series A funding from The Founders Fund, RevolutionVentures, First Round Capital, and Advanced Technology Ventures is expected to help.

eHarmony Uses Tealeaf Software

Posted on June 18, 2007

Eharmony_logoINFORMATION WEEK — June 15 — eHarmony has started using TeaLeaf’s Web monitoring software in an effort to improve the customer experience. eHarmony uses TeaLeaf to detect reliability and access problems, and the product team has begun using it to watch how people navigate the site to better tweak offerings. eHarmony saw that it was losing some potential customers during the four-step checkout process to purchasing a subscription, so it shortened it. The marketing team has started using TeaLeaf to determine the success of campaigns, and customer care reps can peruse specific user sessions to get to the bottom of a customer complaint.

Yahoo’s Challenge

Posted on February 22, 2006

Yahoocom_3INFORMATION WEEK — Feb — Yahoo's chief data officer Fayyad knows if you're about to buy a new car. "When you're on the Yahoo network you're telling a lot more about yourself and your intent…I can turn that into a very powerful ad-matching machine…in many cases, much more powerful than search." Yahoo; $5.26 billion in revenue last year, 47% more than 2004.  Google; $6.1 billion in 2005, a 92% increase. Between November 2004 and November 2005, Yahoo went from handling 32% of Internet searches to 29.5%, according to comScore Media Metrix. Google's market capitalization stood at $106 billion earlier this month, more than double Yahoo's market cap of roughly $46 billion.   Yahoo is more diversified than Google, with 12% of its revenue coming from user fees.  Yahoo has more unique users and they spend 10 times as much time on Yahoo. "If I get 10% more usage from the average consumer, I have suddenly created 10% more inventory for my ads," Fayyad says. Yahoo accomplished something like that last year when it made an effort to improve user retention with Yahoo Mail.

Mark Brooks: Yahoo Personals, complete with premier profiling, is a goldmine for contextual advertising.

Microsoft Blogger Condemns Company for Censorship

Posted on January 5, 2006

MsnspacesINFORMATION WEEK — Jan 3 — Microsoft employee Robert Scoble publicly excoriated his own company for allegedly taking down the MSN Spaces blog of a controversial Chinese journalist. "It's one thing to pull a list of words out of blogs using an algorithm. It's another thing to become an agent of a government and censor an entire blogger's work," Scoble wrote on his blog. Scoble based his post on one by former CNN reporter Rebecca MacKinnon, which noted that the Chinese blogger, Zhao Jing, has had his site taken down–apparently by MSN Spaces itself.
