Grindr Beats Revenue Estimates, Bets on AI to Drive Growth

Posted on February 27, 2026

REUTERS – Grindr reported Q4 revenue of $126M, beating estimates, and expanded its share buyback program by $400M, sending shares up about 4% after hours. The company said it will remain publicly listed after reaching an 18-month standstill agreement with its largest shareholder, Ray Zage, following failed take-private talks last year. Grindr is doubling down on AI-driven growth through its proprietary “gAI” system and a new premium subscription tier called “Edge,” while maintaining a strong free product to attract younger users. For 2026, it plans heavier investment in technology upgrades and expansion into health and wellness services, projecting full-year revenue above $528M, roughly in line with expectations.

REUTERS –  Austrian privacy group NOYB has filed complaints against TikTok, Grindr, and AppsFlyer, alleging they violated EU GDPR rules by tracking users across apps and sharing sensitive data without consent. NOYB says a user discovered, through a data-access request, that TikTok had accessed information about their Grindr activity, along with data from other apps, via AppsFlyer. The group claims TikTok used this information for personalized ads, analytics, and security, and that neither Grindr nor AppsFlyer had legal grounds to transfer such data. NOYB is urging regulators to issue fines and halt the practices.

Grindr Ends Talks on $3.46 Billion Take-private Bid Over Financing Uncertainty

Posted on November 24, 2025
Grindr

REUTERS – Grindr has ended talks on a $3.46B take-private offer from its major shareholders Ray Zage and James Lu after they failed to provide clear financing details. The stock fell ~12% after the announcement. Grindr says the breakdown of talks does not change its strategy and that it is still projecting ~26% revenue growth for the year. The company continues to outperform Match Group and Bumble despite weaker sentiment in the dating-app sector. Zage and Lu, who bought Grindr in 2020 and took it public in 2022, hold ~60% of the shares.

Grindr Shareholders Offer to Take the Dating App Private for $3.46B

Posted on October 27, 2025
Grindr

REUTERS – Two major Grindr board members, Ray Zage and James Lu, who already control ~60% of the company, have proposed taking the LGBTQIA+ dating app private at a $3.46B valuation ($18 per share), a 51% premium over its Oct 10 price. The offer aims to consolidate control amid slowing user growth and “swiping fatigue” affecting the dating industry. Zage and Lu, who bought Grindr in 2020 and took it public in 2022, claim to have secured strong financing commitments. Grindr’s special committee of independent directors is currently reviewing the unsolicited offer.

Match Group Warns Apple’s 30% Fee Will Hurt Growth in India

Posted on October 27, 2025
Match Group

REUTERS – Match Group told India’s antitrust regulator that Apple’s up to 30% App Store commission will stifle its long-term growth in India and urged the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to impose heavy fines and force Apple to end anti-competitive practices. Match argues Apple’s policy limits third-party payment options and unfairly classifies Tinder as a digital service while charging lower fees to apps like Uber, which it claims also provide “matchmaking” services. India’s dating app market is projected to reach $1.42B by 2030. Apple controls only 4.5% of India’s 735M smartphones, but the CCI can fine it up to 10% of global turnover. The complaint follows similar antitrust rulings in the EU and UK, where Apple has been fined for restrictive practices against app developers.

Two US Senators Urge Match Group to Act Against Dating Scams on Its Apps

Posted on September 24, 2025
Match Group

REUTERS – On Sept 24, US senators Maggie Hassan and Marsha Blackburn sent Match Group a letter demanding, by Oct 15, details on how Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid detect and prevent romance scams. They warn that the apps’ design can create a false sense of trust that scammers exploit, citing the FBI’s $16 billion in global cybercrime losses last year, including significant losses from romance scams. The letter references Match’s past FTC case and asks for concrete anti-fraud measures as the company introduces new AI-driven features.

REUTERS – The Dutch antitrust regulator ACM has postponed its decision on Apple’s App Store fees for dating apps, pending ongoing discussions between Apple and the European Commission. Apple has recently adjusted its rates and plans further changes. A Dutch court previously confirmed that Apple had abused its dominant position by imposing unfair conditions on dating app providers.

Dutch Court Confirms Apple Abused Dominant Position in Dating Apps

Posted on June 17, 2025
Apple logo

REUTERS – A Dutch court has upheld a 2021 ruling that Apple abused its dominant position by forcing dating apps to use its own payment system, banning external links, and charging up to 30% commission. The court backed the Dutch consumer watchdog (ACM), which fined Apple €50M for non-compliance. Apple plans to appeal, saying the ruling “undermines the tools we’ve built to protect privacy and security.”

Match Group Adds New Director Amid Activist Clash

Posted on April 8, 2025
Logo of Match Group

REUTERS – Match Group has appointed Darrell Cavens, co-founder of Zulily, to its board amid rising tensions with activist investor Anson Funds, which recently nominated three directors of its own. Match says Cavens brings digital commerce and tech innovation expertise, aligning with its strategy for board refreshment. Anson, pushing for cost cuts and a review of Match’s Asia business, criticized the move as reinforcing insider ties, noting CEO Spencer Rascoff previously served on Zulily’s board. Match, whose valuation has dropped from $40B to $7.2B, does not support Anson’s nominees.
