The Start of the Post-Tinder Era

Posted on June 30, 2021

Once iconTHE GUARDIAN – June 29 – Women are at the forefront of developing new dating tech. Following on the heels of Whitney Wolfe Herd there are others trying to build more female-friendly platforms. Clementine Lalande, 37, launched Pickable in 2018 for women who wanted more discretion. Women don't need to upload a photo or give their name, so they can browse men's profiles anonymously. In 2015, along with a friend, Lalande also helped create the "slow dating" app Once, which delivers one match a day. The app has 10M users. "Online dating is a market designed by men for men and is governed in a non-transparent way," says Paris-based Lalande, CEO of the Once Dating Group. Jessica and Louella Alderson set up So Syncd in January 2021 after raising ~$1M (£700,000) through a combination of venture capital, an investment club, angel investors and family. The app matches couples based on the Myers-Briggs personality test. One of the first employees at Plenty Of Fish, Kim Kaplan shifted to angel investing before setting up video dating app Snack in Sep 2020. The app, whose engineering team comprises 43% women, aims to combine the matching algorithms of dating platforms like Tinder with streaming platforms such as TikTok.

Pickable Founder: “British Men Need to Be More Romantic”

Posted on May 23, 2019

Pickable clementine lalandeDAILYMAIL.CO.UK – May 22 – Clémentine Lalande, 36, is the French founder of dating app Pickable. She claims the British dating scene is missing 'sparkle and magic' of the French. Lalande's app, Pickable, is designed to encourage what it describes as 'slow dating', getting users off the app, away from text exchanges and onto a real-life dates. However she noted British men appear to lack creativity when it comes to planning face-to-face encounters. She launched Pickable in France and the UK in November last year and it now has 1M active users, including 200K in the UK. The key to Pickable is that it gives women a greater sense of control over their online dating by keeping their identity anonymous. They can sign up on the app anonymously, without photos and any other details. Men, meanwhile, create a traditional profile, with a name, photo and bio. Women are able to scroll through men's profiles on the app and, when they land on a user they like, send them a message.

Dating App Pickable Promises Anonymity for Women

Posted on April 26, 2019

Pickable iconTECHWORLD – Apr 24 – On a new dating app Pickable, women browse the profiles of men and if they choose to 'like' them then at that point they send a photo. The man then decides whether to accept the request or not. Founder Clémentine Lalande says that this is in the aim of redressing the gender power imbalance in dating apps, and allowing women to wrest back control. Pickable only ask for men's age, location and height, and doesn't store any data for women.

Pickable: New Dating App That Emphasizes Women’s Privacy

Posted on April 2, 2019

Pickable clementine lalandeLEAD – Apr 2 – Pickable is a new dating app where women do not have to register and create a profile. Founder Clémentine Lalande (also a co-CEO of French dating app Once) sees a great potential in her new concept, especially in Germany.

Q: Why do we need another dating app?
A: We need a new dating app because singles are tired of the swiping culture. Some users, mostly men, use bots to swipe right in order to get more matches. Women get too many messages at the best, investing too much lifetime.

Q: And in the worst case?
A: Aggressive messages or obscene pictures.

Q: What's Pickable doing differently than Tinder?
A: I chose a very radical approach and gave women 100% of control. They are completely anonymous and do not have to reveal any information. Women pick out the men on Pickable and decide for themselves what they want to share with them.

Q: Why do you see a great potential in Germany?
A: Our studies have shown that German women find swiping a lot more stressful than others. 25% of women feel uncomfortable, but in France or Italy, for example, only 10% of women feel uncomfortable about swiping. That's why I have high hopes for the German market.
